Before it all fell apart
The night of the incident The old building stood in silence, half-collapsed and surrounded by yellow police tape. Officers kept the area secured, their radios crackling softly in the background. Emma and Owen stepped out of their car, their badges glinting under the dull morning light. The air was thick with tension. Alex stepped out of his car quickly, his expression unreadable. A moment later, Amanda emerged from her own car, her face pale and streaked with tears. “Where is he?!” Amanda cried out, her voice trembling. Emma gently reached out, her eyes filled with concern. “She’s upstairs,” she said softly. Without waiting another second, Amanda bolted toward the staircase, her heels echoing against the cracked concrete. Her sobs filled the air as she raced upward, desperation etched into every step. “Amanda, slow down! You’re going to fall!” Alex shouted behind her as they both rushed up the unstable staircase. “Don’t tell me what to do!” Amanda snapped, her voice cracking with emotion. She stopped suddenly, frozen in place, eyes wide, heart pounding. Her entire world was about to collapse. TWO DAYS EARLIER The small bedroom was dimly lit. A half-packed duffel bag sat on the edge of the bed. Alex stood by the closet, hastily pulling on a dark shirt. “Where are you going in the middle of the night?” Dianna’s sleepy voice cut through the silence. She sat up in bed, wrapping the blanket around her shoulders. Alex turned, hesitating only for a moment. “I told you—I’ve got business to handle. I’m heading to Miami.” “Miami? Now?” she asked, worried. “I could come with you.” He stepped closer, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. “No. I don’t want to put you in danger. If something ever happened to you, I’d go insane.” “I know,” she whispered. Then she leaned in and kissed him softly. Alex kissed her back, lingering for a moment like he didn’t want to let go. He pulled away, brushing her cheek with his thumb. “I’ll miss you,” he said, voice low and sincere. “I love you, Alex,” she replied. He gave her one last look, then turned and walked to the door. From the window, Dianna watched as he walked to the car. She waved at him from behind the glass. He saw her and smiled. A black SUV was waiting by the curb. The passenger window rolled down. “Mr. Alex, ready to go?” asked Kevin, a young man in his late twenties, leaning out from the driver’s seat. “How many times do I have to tell you?” Alex grinned. “Drop the ‘Mr.’ crap. You’re my childhood friend, not my bodyguard.” Kevin chuckled. “Yeah, yeah. You’re still the only guy I know who can run a mafia operation and act like he’s going on a weekend fishing trip.” “No one believes I’m mafia anyway,” Alex replied with a laugh. “That’s the trick.” The two men laughed as they got into the car. The city lights faded behind them as the SUV disappeared into the night.: Dianna rushed down the grand staircase of the villa, her silk robe flowing behind her like a shadow in the night. From the hallway, Ella Alex’s young sister appeared, rubbing her eyes. “Dianna? Where are you going?” Dianna paused, forcing a calm smile. “What are you doing up this late, sweetheart?” “I heard the door. What happened?” “Don’t worry, honey,” Dianna said softly.“Go back to bed. I just needed some fresh air.” She stepped outside into the cool night, inhaling deeply. The air felt heavy, as if it knew what she was trying to forget. Across the garden, David was sitting on a wooden bench beneath the old oak tree, staring up at the stars. Dianna walked up slowly, then wrapped her arms around him from behind. “Happy birthday, my love,” she whispered. David smiled gently. “Thank you.” She pulled out a small cake from a box she’d been carrying. It was simple, with one candle. “Make a wish,” she said, placing the candle and lighting it. David looked at the flame, then closed his eyes. “I already wished,” he said. “You know what it is. To always be with you.” Dianna smiled softly, her heart aching. “I know.” Meanwhile Amanda was asleep in her cozy bedroom, wrapped in her blanket. The house was quiet—until the door creaked open. Her father, Harry, walked in carrying a cake. Behind him was little Mia, her younger sister, holding balloons that floated wildly above her head. “Happy birthday, Amanda!” they both shouted. Amanda blinked awake, sitting up in surprise. “What—? Is it midnight already?” Mia laughed. “It’s 12:00! Get up, birthday girl!” Amanda stood up and hugged them both tightly. “I can’t believe you did this. I love you so much.” Amanda grinned. “It would be better if David was here.” Harry raised an eyebrow. “Still can’t celebrate without your twin, huh?” Amanda looked down, her voice soft. “Yeah… it’s not the same without him.” Mia clapped her hands. “Don’t worry! Tomorrow when we’re in New York, you’ll get to celebrate with him too!” Harry chuckled. “Mia, don’t ruin the surprise.” Amanda laughed through tears, hugging them both again. “You two are my heart.” Harry kissed her forehead. “May you always be happy, my daughter.” Amanda wiped her eyes as they filled with emotion. “Thank you, Dad.” Morning in Miami The early sun cast a golden glow over the calm shoreline. Waves lapped gently against the sand, and a warm breeze swept through the palms. Amanda sat on a hanging swing by the edge of the beach, her hair dancing in the wind. Her eyes were distant, thoughtful, as if caught between dreams and reality. Alex caught sight of her. She looked up—meeting his gaze—and for a brief second, time seemed to hold its breath. “Kevin, where are you?” Alex asked, not breaking eye contact. “I’m right here, Mr. Alex,” Kevin said as he exited from the other side of the car. Amanda whispered to herself, “Alex… what a beautiful name.” Just then, Mia called out, “Sister! Come on! Breakfast is ready!” Amanda smiled faintly, scooped Mia into her arms, and laughed. “Now you decide to show up?” The two of them walked off , leaving Alex watching their silhouettes disappear in the soft morning haze. “Alex, when do we meet them?” Kevin asked as he adjusted his sunglasses. “In about two hours. It’s the most exclusive jewelry auction in the state. They are obsessed with our diamonds.Alex asked“What about the others?” “You mean… the dark side?” Kevin smirked. “My favorite topic.” “Shut it, Kevin.” “I’m just saying—they asked if the diamonds are ready.” “They are,” Alex said, brushing sand off his shoe—until he noticed something shiny beneath it. Alex bent down and picked it up. A bracelet. Silver. Delicate. The name engraved on it was simple… but somehow haunting. Amanda. He turned it over in his hand, brows slightly furrowed. He didn’t know anyone by that name. And yet… Something about it felt important. Like a warning. Like a promise. He slipped the bracelet into his pocket, unaware of the girl laughing down the beach with her little sister—the girl whose name he now carried. And two days later, he’d be standing in the ruins of a broken building… as enemies, with Amanda Everhart.
