Chapter 1

2062 Words
The full moon shone brightly in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the small town of Millfield. Luna, a werewolf warrior, sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the town, watching as the humans below went about their mundane lives. She was restless, feeling the pull of the moon in her veins. The full moon always brought out the beast in her, and tonight was no exception. Luna had always known that she was different from the other werewolves in her pack. While they relished the thrill of the hunt and the power of the moon, Luna was torn between her two sides, both the human and the wolf within her. She yearned for a life beyond the pack, where she could be free to be herself, but she was afraid of what the world would think of her. As she gazed at the moon, she heard a rustling behind her. She spun around, ready to defend herself, only to see a stranger standing a few feet away from her. He was a human, tall and lanky with a shock of dark hair and piercing blue eyes. "Who are you?" Luna demanded, her hand instinctively reaching for her weapon. "I'm Jake, a journalist," the stranger replied, holding up his hands in surrender. "I was just out for a walk and I saw you up here. I thought I'd come see what was so interesting." Luna was wary of the stranger, but she could sense no malice in him. He seemed genuine and curious, with a twinkle in his eye that made Luna's heart beat faster. "I'm Luna," she said, her voice softer now. "What brings you to Millfield?" "I'm on assignment," Jake explained. "I'm here to investigate a series of strange events that have been happening in town. People are disappearing, and the local authorities are saying that it's just wildlife, but I have a feeling that there's more to the story." Luna felt her heart race as she realized that Jake was talking about the same events that had been bothering her. She had noticed that some of the humans in town had gone missing, and she was worried that her pack might be involved. She had been meaning to speak to her alpha about it, but she wasn't sure how to approach him. "I might be able to help you," Luna said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Really?" Jake asked, his eyes lighting up. "I could use a local guide who knows the area." Luna nodded, feeling a sense of excitement at the prospect of working with Jake. She was drawn to him, both by his intelligence and his determination, and she felt a connection to him that she couldn't explain. She didn't know what the future held for them, but she was willing to take a chance. she noticed that his eyes kept flickering from the page to her, as if he were aware of her presence even before she reached him. Luna hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should talk to him, but then she mustered up the courage to approach him. "Hi," she said, trying to sound casual. "What are you reading?" He looked up and smiled at her, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's a classic, 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. Have you read it?" Luna nodded. "Yes, I love that book. It's one of my favorites." Luna POV You know, I've never had this opportunity before, I said to Jake. "Wow, really?" He asked. "Yeah, I always come up to this spot alone. I don't think any human would have... s**t," I muttered to myself. "What am I doing trying to spill my identity to a human stranger whom I know nothing about?" "I guess you never had time to relate with humans," he said to me. "For as much as we see them to be bad, they are of three types, I'd say." "Humans are of one species, so I don't get what you mean by three types," I replied. "Well, well, well," he said. "I was trying to say their mindsets are set on a certain path." "And what are those paths?" I asked him sarcastically. "Since you're so knowledgeable about humans." "Humans could be either of these three - the good, the bad, and the ugly," he replied. "Wow," I whispered. "How'd you know all about this?" I asked him. "Well, I've lived with humans all my life, and I had to study their way of life so as to live in harmony with my type," Jake said. "So what's your type?" I asked him. "Can we leave that for another day?" he replied. "Yeah, let's talk about other things, like your job and stuff about you," I said. Jake's POV I have been silent for a while now. I wasn't expecting her to want to know more about me. What do I tell her about myself? Family? Past? Job? Or the fact that I'm a wolf descendant? What was I thinking? I've turned off by wolf intuition. Not like I'll expect her to scream in joy for seeing a wolf for the first time. She could possibly turn me in to the authorities, and I couldn't let that happen now. I do need to investigate the recent happenings here so I'll be able to get my promotion. Or perhaps I should tell her about my past. "Earth to Jake!" she screamed at my ears. "I'm sorry about that," I said to her. "I only asked to know about you, and you were out for over 5 minutes, sweating profusely. I hope you're okay," she said. "Yeah, yeah, I'm cool. I was just caught up in the moment," I said. "It's fine if you don't want to talk about it. Perhaps you had a rough past, just like mine," she replied with a tone of sadness in her voice. I turned to look at her faster than I wanted to. "What do you mean by having a rough past? How? Where?" I asked, concerned because I was beginning to get concerned about her, even though we've just met each other. I feel a connection between us. "You don't have to feel pity over me, Jake. It's all in the past now. I don't dwell on my past. I'm in my present time and planning ahead of my future. I'd say it isn't necessary," she said, and I felt hurt by her words. "It's not a pity. It's just affection, Luna, and about myself, I'll tell you, but promise me not to shed tears or run away from me, please," I said. "I promise not to, no matter how bad it was then for you," she replied. I could swear I felt my heart tingle. Looking up at the sky, I decided to share a memory I've tried so hard to bury and keep in my past. Well, I guess there are times you have to let them go and move on. "It all started twenty years ago, when a young couple on the west coast got married to each other on the night of a full moon. "And with the power vested upon me, I declare you both as husband and wife," the clerk said. "You may now kiss the bride," and with that said, the groom stepped closer to the bride, placing his lips on hers so delicately, kissing her with love, joy, and passion. Suddenly there was a loud rump and chaos broke out with people clamoring to hide for their safety. Looking up to the sky, the bride saw a wolf hovering over the Altar where they were standing. "Hubby, there is a w...o...l...f," she stuttered. "Shh," he placed his fingers over her lips and whispered into her ears, "Mary Fisher, do find a place in your heart to forgive me for what I've done. It doesn't deserve me to be forgiven." "But, but wait. I'm not understanding what's happening anymore," she looked up to him and saw his eyes changing into blue and he was turning white, "Your eyes," she managed to whisper in shock. "Just step down slowly from the altar and promise to be safe for me and keep our child safe from all this chaos," he said. "What child are you talking about, I'm not pregnant Michael, so how could there be a child?" "You are not pregnant yet but you will be bearing our child. And can you make me understand what is happening?" "I felt my heart weaken from seeing her in tears but I've already committed myself to this and now I have to sacrifice myself for my loved ones," he said. Kissing her for one last time, slowly and passionately, "when you get home, darling, go through my stuff and you will find my diary. Go through it all and promise to forgive me please. Goodbye, my love," he said in tears. And the unexpected happened, he suddenly shot up towards the sky to the black-haired wolf. But wait, he was white. Mary fell down slowly and she couldn't contain her emotions nor what she was seeing. Her Michael was a wolf. She thought wolves were fairy tales and superstitions. With a wink from wolf Michael, she lost her feet and fell down in pain. But upon looking up, she felt a much greater pain. Michael was being beaten by the black-haired wolf. Michael was trying to fight him but his strength was no match to the black-haired wolf. With one last punch, Michael came crashing down onto the Altar with blood oozing out of his body parts. Mary rushed toward him, holding his hands in hers, looking up to his eyes. She whispered the only words she could at that moment, "Michael, stay with me please, I love you. Don't leave me in this cruel world. We could go far away from all this. Just promise to stay with me." With the last atom of energy Michael had, he pulled her closest to himself and kissed her slowly with his bloodied mouth and whispered… "Tell Jake I'd always love him," Mary said. "You wait and tell that to Jake," Mary said. "Somebody call the ambulance, please!" Mart screamed. "But she was left all alone with Micheal." "When she stood up to go call for help, Micheal held her back and said, 'An ambulance can't help me, my love. This is the price I had to pay for loving a human.'" "But I don't regret it, Mary. I won't, and I will never. Don't go living in regret or sorrow. Try to ease up and find comfort in the world and whatever it has to provide to you." "I love you, M-a-r-y, M-i-c-h-e-a-l." "Mary tried to pull him close, but he was getting faded slowly until he was all in the wind as dust." "A noise brought her back from looking up at the dust of her husband. Lo and behold, it was a pendant he had claimed to be his ancestor's. No longer a stranger to it." Mary's POV "I was shocked, devastated, and depressed about what had happened in the last few hours. What went wrong? When and why? The questions kept coming at her, but she couldn't help herself in getting the answers she needed." "Stepping down from the Altar and walking down the hall, which was once supposed to be the happiest moment of her life, now becoming a hall that made her feel like this was the worst day of her life. How tables turn so quickly without us being in power to adjust them to our fitting." "She ran out of the hall with her heels echoing all through it. Stepping out of the hall, she found her car, which was once used to convey her bridesmaids to the wedding venue. She hopped into the driver's seat, but remembering she had no keys with her, she searched all the corners of the car but found them right there on the ignition switch. Turning the car on, she reversed as fast as she's ever driven before and out of the prestigious Beverly Hills Hall of Fame. She sped out of the avenue and towards home, overtaking and overspeeding her way through the bustling traffic of California. A bride in her supposed wedding dress and tears, murdered make-up, overspeeding in tears."
