Chapter 1: The Broken Rule
If you listen to the admissions counselor during orientation, St. Jude’s Academy is a prestige institution built on tradition, excellence, and global leadership. They hand you glossy brochures featuring smiling students on pristine manicured lawns, pretending that hard work and intellect are the only currencies that matter within these wrought-iron gates. If you ask anyone who actually goes here, it’s a high-security playpen for silver-spoon sociopaths. The rules at St. Jude’s are , but they are simple enough for even a transfer student to memorize on day one. Tier 1: The heirs of multinational conglomerates, real estate tycoons, and corrupt politicians who run the halls with zero accountability. They don't get detention; their parents buy new wing extensions for the library whenever a scandal needs to be buried. Tier 2: The wealthy hangers-on, who buy their way into relevance by acting as lapdogs for Tier 1. Tier 3: Everyone else whose parents earn under eight figures. And then there’s the scholarship kids—the invisible ghosts brought in to pad the school’s diversity metrics for state tax write-offs. We exist to be ignored. We eat in the overflow cafeteria, sit in the back rows of classrooms, and keep our eyes fixed firmly on the floor. Or, if Chloe Sinclair happens to be having a bad morning, we exist to be used for target practice. I pulled my uniform blazer tighter against the sharp morning chill, trying to push past the wall of students gathered near the central fountain. My work-study shift at the registrar’s office started in four minutes. If I was late again, Mr. Harrison would dock my monthly stipend, and I needed every single cent of that stipend to cover my textbook fees and transit pass. "Plead for it, Hannah. On your knees, or I tell my father’s board to cancel your family’s housing grant by noon today." Chloe’s voice cut through the courtyard—sharp, bored, and dripping with absolute, practiced authority. I stopped mid-step. In the center of the paved courtyard, a terrified first-year scholarship student was trembling on her knees, her hands clasped together in desperate entreaty. Chloe stood over her, casually holding a custom pearl-white iPhone, tapping the screen with long, manicured acrylic nails while her three usual lackeys giggled behind her like clockwork hyenas. The crowd of nearly thirty students just watched. Some were recording the scene on their phones for private group chats. Others stared down at their shoes, praying Chloe’s unpredictable mood wouldn’t drift toward them next. Nobody moved to step in. Nobody said a word. That was Rule Number Two at St. Jude’s: Never interfere with a Tier 1 when they’re playing with their food. I checked my watch. Three minutes until my shift. "Move," I said, stepping into the outer ring of spectators blocking the main marble stairwell. Nobody budged. They were too transfixed by the public execution unfolding in front of them. "I said, get out of the way," I repeated, keeping my tone clipped and louder this time. Chloe’s head snapped toward me. The entire courtyard went dead silent instantly. The giggling stopped, cut off like a severed wire. "What did you just say, transfer?" Chloe turned slowly, her eyes tracking down my unbranded leather shoes, my faded uniform skirt, and my plain navy blazer. She sneered, stepping away from the girl on the ground and moving toward me until she was invading my personal space. "Did a scholarship ghost just speak to me?" "You're blocking the stairs," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on hers, my voice entirely flat and devoid of emotion. "I have a job to get to." Chloe let out a theatrical, breathless laugh, looking around at her court of followers as if I’d spoken in ancient Greek. "A job? Oh, sweetie. You think your little minimum-wage shift matters here? You’re standing in my courtyard. If I want you to wait until I’m finished, you wait." She reached out, casually snatching a fresh, scalding-hot caramel macchiato from her lackey's hand, tilting the paper cup directly toward my chest. "Or maybe you need a quick lesson in respect before you step foot in this building again." I didn't flinch. I didn't back up. I didn't drop to my knees to beg like Hannah was still doing behind her. I just looked down at the steaming coffee cup, then looked straight back into Chloe's eyes. "If a single drop of that hits this blazer, I’ll make sure your father finds out who leaked his off-shore tax receipts to the bursar's portal last semester," I lied smoothly, keeping my pulse dead steady and my expression blank. Chloe froze, her wrist locking mid-air. For a split second, genuine shock flickered across her face, replaced instantly by deep, volatile rage. Before her brain could process whether I was bluffing or how a scholarship student could possibly know about her father's financial audits, I reached out, snatched her custom $5,000 pearl-cased phone right out of her loose hand, and dropped it straight into the open metal trash bin beside us—right into a pool of wet, rotten coffee grounds, discarded food wrappers, and banana peels. A collective, horrified gasp echoed through the entire courtyard. "My phone!" Chloe shrieked, stumbling backward in absolute disbelief, staring at the garbage bin as if I had just thrown her family crest into the mud. "Are you insane?! Do you have any idea who I am?!" "I know you're late for first period," I said, stepping past her trembling frame onto the bottom stair. "And now you don't have a timer to remind you." I didn't run. I didn't rush my pace to make myself look guilty or terrified. I walked up the wide marble stairs with deliberate, calm steps, completely ignoring the frantic screaming and chaotic shouting starting up behind me. As I reached the second-floor glass balcony overlooking the main square, a shadow caught my eye. Standing behind the tinted glass of the private student lounge—a restricted floor completely off-limits to everyone except the academy's founder family—was a tall figure wrapped in a dark, tailored suit. Julian Vance. He was holding a crystal glass of water, leaning casually against the railing, watching the entire scene unfold down in the courtyard. Julian wasn't just Tier 1; he was the reason Tier 1 existed. His family owned the land the school was built on, along with half the private defense contracts in the country. He rarely spoke to anyone, rarely attended general assemblies, and treated the rest of the student body like background noise. His dark, icy eyes were locked directly onto mine through the glass. Julian didn't look angry. He didn't look shocked by what I had just done to Chloe. Slowly, the most dangerous guy in the entire institution tilted his glass slightly in my direction—a silent, mock toast—a slow, predatory smirk spreading across his sharp face. And for the very first time since I stepped foot inside St. Jude’s Academy, my stomach cold-dropped.
