10 THE DYING EARTH We exit the glowing portal opened by the Speaking Stone into a world with a red sun, with buildings so old they were eroded by the winds, planted sparsely with plants that may be the distant Descendants of the corn plant, squash or tomatoes. Old and obscure pieces of machinery are scattered about the terrain. The air is oppressive and heavy. The world feels old. This is the face of the Dying Earth. I look at Tyr. “Do you have any idea why we need to come here to find the Guardian’s Keep? I hardly think that this place has anything to offer to anyone, except maybe death.” Tyr shakes his head. “I do not know what we need from this place, but I have been here before, or a place like it. Some dangerous creatures are running about here, so we should be ready for anything.
