Your Luna

~Althea's POV I heard a knock on my door about twenty minutes after Alaric left, and by the sound of it, I already knew who it was. Nobody in this place knocked like that, two short, sharp taps that somehow still managed to sound impatient. I crossed the room, still wrapped in that blanket and towel— don't ask why I haven't put on clothes yet— and pulled the door open. Sera stood there, her back straight as usual, and her face giving absolutely nothing away. But there was something slightly off about her energy this morning, like she'd been pulled away from something she'd rather be doing and was being very professional about not showing it at the moment. Very professional is the keyword. "You have an appointment at the pack clinic," she said in a clipped and direct tone. "Routine examination." I frowned at her. “But, I'm fine." "It's mandatory, given you’re the Luna," she replied, putting a very particular emphasis on those last two words that I chose not to examine too deeply right now. "So..." She gestured vaguely toward the corridor, like she was already done with this conversation and was just waiting for my body to start moving. I looked at her for a second, unsure of what to call this behavior, and she stared back at me, unblinking. I sighed loudly and with my whole chest, before turning to go find a dress, shutting the door behind me. The one I grabbed was simple, comfortable, nothing that needed assistance or three mirrors to put on correctly, because I was not about to go through another ordeal this morning. I pulled it on, ran my fingers through my hair, and deemed it good enough. Sera was still standing in the doorway when I came back out, which told me she hadn't moved an inch the entire time, and also told me she was very much not interested in making this any easier than it needed to be. We walked in silence, absolutely fine by me, honestly. I was still carrying the remains of this morning in my chest and didn't particularly feel like filling the air with words. The courtyard was already busy, pack members moving through their routines, guards doing their rotations, everything running in that quiet, efficient way I was slowly getting used to. It still surprises me sometimes, the absence of tension here. In Darkmoon, everything had an edge to it, every interaction, every corridor, every meal. But here, it just… didn't. People walked freely and peacefully. I was still thinking about that when I heard a voice cheerfully greet Sera. "Sera." The voice came from somewhere to our left, and I felt more than saw Sera slow down beside me. I turned to look over curiously. The man walking toward us was older, not too tall, carrying himself with that specific kind of weight that comes from spending too many years being the most important person in every room he walked into. His clothes were well-made, and his expression was something between authority and boredom. He and Sera greeted each other warmly, and I mean actually warmly, which was jarring to witness because warm was not a word I had ever associated with Sera in any capacity. She even smiled! A small one, but still, it was there. I watched with interest as they communicated, almost as though I was invincible. They spoke briefly in low voices, familiar and easy, and I shifted on my feet, standing awkwardly to the side and waiting because clearly introductions weren't going to happen anytime soon. After what seemed like a minute had passed, he looked at me. And not just stopping there, his face had that look— I can't put a name on it, but it wasn't a good look either. Starting at my face and travelling all the way down to my legs and back up again slowly, his expression did nothing at all to disguise what he was doing or what he thought about what he was seeing. Okay… what is this about? I at least expected a greeting or an acknowledgment, or even a basic nod as his Luna. He then turned back to Sera like I wasn't standing two feet away. "This is the one, then." He said to her, and she nodded. While I was right there. What the hell? I scowled before clearing my throat, taking one step closer to him with my arms wide open beside me. He caught the movement and looked back at me, slightly thrown aback, his brows pulled together. "What are you—" “Just making it easier for you," I replied with a smirk and a pleasant voice. "I didn't think you were having quite the look from over there, and I just thought, why strain yourself? When I could come closer so you'd get a proper one." His face shifted immediately, reddening slightly around the neck. "Do you know who I am, young lady?" "I don't," I shrugged honestly, holding his gaze without blinking. "But I have to say, I'm not sure it matters much either way. You looked me over like I was something you weren't sure you wanted to touch, and I was standing right here the whole time." I tilted my head just slightly. "Whatever your title is, that was beneath it. Don't you think?" His mouth opened and then closed before he snarled loudly. I could see Sera shift in my peripheral vision. "Luna," she started, her voice dropping in a way that was half warning and half something else I couldn't fully read. I shot her a look, “Oh, so I'm your Luna now?” She stilled, eyes meeting mine, and her jaw clenched visibly, before bowing slowly like she was being forced. I looked at them long enough to let them know ive regustered their actions, and was choosing to wrap this up on my own terms. Then I turned and walked away, back straight with enough regality, but not before stopping to look over my shoulder. "You either stay there and chat with your ‘little’ friend, or you lead me to the clinic. Decide fast." I called back over my shoulder, easy and unbothered. There was a beat of tensed silence, and I didn't look back. Then her footsteps followed behind, and somehow even the sound of them felt different from what it was earlier on. I smiled to myself. Whatever that was, it wasn't my problem right now. I had a hospital visit and a council meeting to get through, apparently.
