Snowed out
The snow wasn’t supposed to be this bad. The GPS promised “light flurries,” not the full-blown white apocalypse that was currently slamming against my windshield. The wipers squeaked helplessly, brushing off snow only for it to pile right back up as if the sky had beef with me personally. Of course. Of course this would happen to me — on the one trip I planned for myself all year. “Hotel Wintercrest,” I muttered, squinting at the blurry screen. “You better have a bed, a heater, and hot chocolate waiting.” The phone buzzed weakly in my hand. HOTEL CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER. WE APOLOGIZE My phone died. The car battery light blinked. I let my forehead drop onto the steering wheel. “Fantastic. I love that for me. Merry freaking Christmas.” Wind howled around the car like the mountains were laughing at me. I was alone, the road practically swallowed by snow, and the temperature dropping by the second. I tried starting the car again. Click. Click. Nothing. I closed my eyes. “Okay. Okay. Don’t panic. Don’t—” A glow appeared behind me. Headlights. A truck slowed to a stop beside my car, engine rumbling like something powerful and safe. Someone stepped out — tall, broad-shouldered, wrapped in a dark jacket dusted with snow. He knocked on my window gently. “Hey,” a deep voice called. “You alright in there?” I cracked the door open, snowflakes whipping in. “My car died. And my phone. And apparently my sanity.” He huffed a soft laugh. Even in the storm, his voice was warm. “You picked the wrong week to drive up here.” “No kidding.” A small face peeked out from behind him — a tiny girl, bundled in a red puffy coat, holding a stuffed reindeer almost as big as her. “Daddy, she’s cold,” she whispered. Daddy? The man crouched slightly to block the wind from hitting me. “Look, the storm’s getting worse. My cabin’s five minutes from here. You can wait it out there.” A stranger. A cabin. Normally, every horror movie warning would’ve gone off. But something in his voice didn’t feel dangerous — just calm. Grounded. Safe. And the little girl clutching his leg helped too. “I don’t want to impose,” I said, teeth chattering. “You’re not imposing,” he insisted. “No one should be stuck out here.” There was something about the way he looked at me — steady, quiet, like he wasn’t the type to leave anyone behind. He offered his hand. “I’m Ryan.” I hesitated, then placed my freezing hand in his warm one. “Ariana.” “Nice to meet you, Ariana,” he said softly. “Let’s get you warm.” He led me to the truck, opening the passenger door for me like it was instinct. The heater blasted delicious warmth, and I nearly moaned. He strapped his daughter into a booster seat. “This is Lily,” he said. Lily waved and whispered, “Hi.” I smiled weakly. “Hi, sweetheart.” Ryan climbed into the driver’s seat, brushing snow off his curls. “Hold on tight. The road gets a little rough.” The truck rumbled forward, snow swirling wildly outside as the storm swallowed the world behind us. Despite everything, I felt… safe. A stranger’s truck. A dark road. A storm. And yet, something told me I wasn’t being rescued by the wrong person. Ryan’s voice cut through the quiet. “You’re shivering.” “I’m fine,” I lied. He reached behind his seat, grabbed a thick blanket, and placed it gently around my shoulders — close enough that his warm fingers grazed my neck. “Better?” My breath hitched. “Yeah. Better.” Lily giggled softly, like she noticed something I didn’t want to admit. As the cabin came into view through the snow, warm golden light glowing through frosted windows, I realized this wasn’t going to be the holiday I expected. It might end up being something else entirely. Something warmer. Something bigger. Something dangerous in the softest way. And the way Ryan glanced at me when he thought I wasn’t looking… Yeah. I was definitely in trouble.
