Drunk Sober
It was just another day in the quite village of Daka. The sun was scotching and the villagers were up and down trying to get some relief from the heat of the sun. While some took cover in the shade, others went out seeking some thing strong to quinch the thirst.
Nothing much happened in Daka, like most villages in Africa, houses were typically distant from each. And to get to your neighbors, you would have to prepare yourself for some exercising because of the distance.
Daka , though it was a village, it had development in the form of a school , town hall, and some few shops. Though none of the roads were tarred most of the villagers didn't mind how dusty the gravel roads were as long as they could travel .
Villagers were grateful for the access to electricity though, it wasn't always present during storms and lightning. Though they had access to water they still had to travel some distance to the nearest tap to fetch water.
Musa was in his late 20s living in the village and had lost all interest for life. After losing his job in the mines in the nearby town, he found himself plunged into a lifestyle of drinking.
Having lost his wife and child in a car accident, he embraced depression and liquor as his confidante.
Musa was his neighbor who had invited him over for a feast that he was having. His neighbor had a cow that he wanted him to help s*******r. Musa came and was met with warm embraces and his own share of beer to drink while they wait for other men to arrive to help s*******r the cow.
When the other village men arrived the sun was already at its fullest and Musa was already starting to get drunk.
His neighbor noticing Musa state, changed his mind on Musa assisting with the cows s*******r, but Musa insisted.
Musa filled with the bravery of gin, approached the bull clumsily and missed the area he was stabbing and the bull broke the ropes and and stabbed him with its horns, on his lower left rib. Pandemonium erupted as the crowd screamed at the horror of what had just happened. Villagers gave chase to the cow but it ran itself right off a cliff and plummeted to its death.
Musa went home to attend to his wounds. But as he was about to sleep his friend Ndu came and knocked at his door. He had a few beer and asked him to join for some drinks at the nearby bar. Musa declined but with his friend insisting and the taste liquor, he was finally convinced and agreed.
Later that night, after a day of drinking in the nearby tarven or liquor store as some of you call it. Musa decided to go his neighbors house who was having a . And he remembered that he he actually didn't even get to eat after the incident with the neighbor cow earlier that day. And Musa knew there would be plenty of booze and food to go around.
Though it was very late night in the night, the full moon brought some comforting light for the now drunk Musa. The village of Daka had many hills, valleys and rivers and had many forests.
Musa had to walk down the valley of Zenzi and pass the river of Nkabi to get his neighbor who was having the feast. So he asked his friend Ndu to accompany him. Ndu was still enjoying drinks, reluctant said yes.
And so they went, two drunks, singing quarelling loud into the night. Musa knew his friend Ndu enjoyed debating when he was drunk and he didn't mind Ndus silly rants.
As they descend on the valley of Zenzi, before we approached the Nkabi river, navigating through the forest, a mist engulfed them. A mist so thick it alarmed Musa that he said " Ndu wasn't it sunny today, why is there a mist here, as if it was raining???
" I don't know, I guess it's because we're near the river that's why it's misty" replied Ndu
"but isn't it summer now? Shouldn't it be less misty than this" continued Musa
" am I God? How the hell am I suppose to know the patterns and conditions of the weather" replied Ndu
"there's really no reason to be rude Ndu" said Musa " I just find the mist odd that's all"
"nevermind the mist Musa are you sure we will get drinks and meat where were heading, I hate walking and the only the reason I agreed to leave with you, is because you said that there's a lot of booze at your neighbors place" said Ndu
"trust me brother, you will drink till you pass out" replies Musa to his friend who could barely walk due to drinking
The grass was long and wet because of the mist and Musa pants were now wet because of it. The moons light though it full was, occasionally dimmed by the clouds in the sky.
Crickets sounds echoed as they journeyed along a pathway that led you past the forest towards the Nkabi River.
Though Musa was drunk, he was in a better state compared to his friend Ndu. Ndu was occasionally falling along the way and Musa would have to aid him up.
As they approached the river and come out of the forest filled with the sounds of frogs. Musa noticed something " Ndu wait..." Said Musa "what now" said Ndu
"can you hear that "exclaimed Musa
" hear what Musa " asked Ndu
" the crickets have gone quite Ndu " said Musa
" so what " said Ndu
" someone or something is following us " said Musa
" stop it your just imagining things Musa " lets continue walking and stop your shenanigans please replies Ndu
Musa was left alone with his thoughts about what he was feeling. He couldn't help, what his gut was saying to him but who can he turn to, since his friend is too drunk to think
He looked at his friend Ndu as he walked further away stumbling along the way. Musa knew he was alone and hopeless if there was any threat to him
He strengthened himself with the thought that this is just his imagination playing tricks on him.
