Chapter 1: Baron Kane
The bright moon hung high in the night sky, illuminating a splendid and majestic chamber. The wide-open doors and windows allowed a chilly breeze to sweep in, causing the oil lamp on the table to flicker intermittently.
Lying beside an overturned chair was a noble youth adorned in splendid attire. At this moment, his delicate face appeared pallid, his eyes tightly shut, and his lips tinged with a bluish hue. Astonishingly, an arrow had brazenly found its mark in his chest, directly piercing his heart.
"Cough, cough..."
Suddenly, the young man convulsed with a fit of coughing, awakening from his stupor. Opening his eyes, he gazed around in bewilderment, realizing that the surroundings were no longer familiar.
"Where am I?"
"Wasn't I at the detective agency? Ugh..."
The rushing memories flooded into his mind. The name of this body was Kane Gerard. A newly inherited baron, he could have enjoyed a promising future. However, on this fateful night, an unexpected assassination abruptly ended his life.
Simultaneously, a man from the Blue Star named Su Ming inherited his body during a nap in his detective agency, unexpectedly finding himself in this situation.
Unsteadily rising to his feet, Su Ming felt a sharp pain in his chest. It was then that he remembered the arrow lodged in his body.
"Damn, I forgot about this."
Staring at the arrow embedded in his chest, Su Ming was unsure of the best course of action. However, the intensifying pain reminded him that he had to make a decision—either endure the pain or pull out the arrow.
After a moment of hesitation, Su Ming took a deep breath, endured the searing pain, and grasped the arrow's shaft, pulling it out. Immediately, a golden-red stream of blood gushed forth, and Su Ming collapsed to the ground.
The excruciating pain overwhelmed him, and as he clutched his bleeding chest, Su Ming gradually transitioned from kneeling to collapsing, losing all strength to support himself. The surroundings blurred as he succumbed to unconsciousness.
...
Morning arrived. When the bright sunlight entered the room, a series of knocks echoed.
"Knock, knock, knock."
"Baron Kane, sir."
Maintaining the same position from the previous night, Su Ming, or rather Baron Kane, once again opened his eyes. Struggling to rise from the floor, he wiped his somewhat damp cheeks and noticed his entire body covered in fresh blood.
However, what puzzled Kane was the blood, tinged with a hint of gold, flowing continuously, defying the expectation that it should have dried or coagulated by now.
Suddenly, as if realizing something, Kane tore off his tattered shirt. Glancing at his chest, he wore an expression confirming his suspicions.
The blood hole left from pulling out the arrow had already healed, leaving only a grim scar. Kane understood clearly that his body underwent some change last night.
Despite his memories indicating that he possessed the strength of a first-tier novice, Kane knew he couldn't have acquired such abilities.
Observing the substantial pool of blood on the floor, Kane shook his head self-mockingly. Whoever could shed this much blood and remain unharmed was undoubtedly far from normal.
At that moment, another inquiry echoed from outside.
"Baron Kane, sir?"
Recognizing the familiar voice, Kane identified the person outside as his personal valet, Enchin. As someone who had grown up with Kane, Enchin held his utmost trust. In this uncertain situation, Enchin was the person Kane trusted the most.
Without further ado, Kane opened the door, welcoming Enchin into the room.
"Baron Kane, what happened to you?" Concerned, Enchin asked, seeing Kane covered in blood.
Kane patted Enchin's shoulder, signaling him to calm down before saying, "Enchin, I'm fine. Don't ask too many questions about this matter. First, tidy up here, and make sure to leave the arrow."
Seeing Kane's reluctance to elaborate, Enchin suppressed his curiosity and began cleaning up. Meanwhile, Kane, having given his instructions, went to the bathroom for a thorough wash.
After freshening up, Kane left his room and, guided by another maid, arrived at the dining room. As he took his seat, the servants brought breakfast, and the butler, Jace, joined the gathering.
According to Kane's previous memories, Jace had served the family since the previous generation, a seasoned individual with invaluable experience.
"Baron Kane, the Bordeaux wine of Pis Castle is ready for you. Shall I serve it now?" inquired Jace.
"Please do, Jace."
"As you wish, Baron Kane."
Taking the wine from the servant, Jace poured it slowly into Kane's glass. Throughout the process, Kane observed the expressions of those around him. However, both Jace and the others appeared as composed as ever.
It seemed that they were unaware of the assassination attempt. Could the assailant be from within the castle?
...
After breakfast, following Kane's habitual routine, he headed to the training grounds outside the castle for his daily exercise. Wielding his sword absentmindedly, he struck the training dummy.
While maintaining the routine, Kane pondered who might be behind the assassination attempt at such a critical moment.
Could it be Jace? Clearly not, as the castle's butler, he had no reason to harm Kane.
Was it Marcus? Kane envisioned a robust and steady figure, but then he shook his head. As the family's sworn knight, Marcus wouldn't make such an unwise choice.
And certainly not Catherine; she, like Marcus, was nurtured by the family and would face severe consequences if Kane were to fall.
Lowering his sword, Kane took the towel handed to him by a servant, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He continued contemplating, eliminating all potential culprits within the castle. That left the possibility of an assailant from outside.
The training session concluded swiftly. Kane returned to his study. Enchin had already cleaned it, and he handed the assassin's arrow to Kane.
Taking the arrow, Kane instructed, "Enchin, remember not to disclose anything that happened in this room."
Enchin nodded, "Understood, Baron Kane," and voluntarily left the study.
After closing the door, Kane carefully examined the arrow. Its tail had a protrusion, and the arrow feathers were placed above this section—a classic design for a crossbow bolt.
Simultaneously, the arrow exhibited a common style, deliberately chosen to conceal the assailant's identity. Kane placed the arrow aside and approached the window.
Assuming his earlier deduction was correct, the assassin likely entered the room from the outside. Despite the daily cleaning by the servants, Kane noticed something peculiar below the window.
Looking down, the castle's magnificent stone walls supported the entire structure. However, a couple of bricks beneath the window appeared slightly different—they lacked a corner, precisely aligning with both sides of the window.
This tiny detail, unnoticed by an ordinary person, was discerned by Kane due to his previous profession.
As expected, the assassin infiltrated from the outside. Evading the castle's multiple patrols and easily scaling the walls, the assailant who managed to successfully assassinate him must be a superhuman, perhaps even more powerful than Kane himself.
This realization posed a headache for Kane. Superhumans possessed
unique abilities that ordinary soldiers couldn't contend with.
Moreover, now that the assailant operated in the shadows while Kane was in the light, if the assassin discovered Kane was still alive, they would likely attempt another assassination.
Kane had to formulate a plan before the next attempt occurred.
