Chapter 1: A New Hire
Emily Parker arrived at Grey Enterprises on a bright Monday morning. The lobby was bustling with employees going about their business, but all activity seemed to have come to a halt as the charming figure made her way to the elevators.
Emily was about to assume office as the head of marketing at Grey Enterprises. She had taken over the position from the previous marketing lead who had resigned suddenly, and she felt a surge of anticipation occupying such a crucial office in one of the top firms in Los Angeles. As Emily stepped out of the elevator, she was greeted by the HR manager, Mr. Harrison.
"Ms. Parker, welcome to Grey Enterprises!" Mr. Harrison said with a warm smile. "We've been eagerly anticipating your arrival."
"Thank you, Mr. Harrison. I'm excited to be here and ready to get started," Emily replied, matching his enthusiasm.
"Please, call me Tom," he said. "Let me show you to your office right away. I'm sure you'll want to settle in before meeting your team."
"That sounds perfect, Tom," Emily said, following him down the hallway.
As they walked, Tom continued, "We've heard great things about you, Emily. The team is looking forward to working under your leadership. Your office is just down here."
They reached a sleek, modern office with large windows offering a panoramic view of the city. Tom opened the door and gestured for Emily to enter.
"Here we are," he said. "I hope you find everything to your liking. Once you're settled, I'll introduce you to your team. They're a talented bunch, eager to learn and contribute."
Emily took a moment to take in the impressive space. "It's wonderful, Tom. Thank you."
"Great! I'll give you a few minutes to get comfortable. When you're ready, we'll head over to the marketing department," Tom said, excusing himself with a nod.
Emily began to unpack her things, feeling a surge of excitement for her incredible feat. It had been her long dream to be a marketing icon in one of the top firms in the United States. This was the beginning of a new chapter for her, and she was determined to make the most of it.
The day flew by, and her team was just as excited a bunch as Tom had described. But one thing still kept her on the edge of her seat - meeting the CEO of Grey Enterprises. He was away for a meeting with some partners, she was informed, and would probably be on seat the following day.

Alexander was enjoying a glass of scotch, his favorite drink, as he gazed out of the window of his luxurious penthouse, lost in thought. His best friend and legal counsel, Ryan Peterson, walked in. Ryan was a well-dressed man in his early 40s just like Alex, and with a friendly smile and an easy-going demeanor.
“Hey, Alex! I see you made it back from your trip.” Ryan said, taking a seat on the couch opposite Alexander.
“Yeah. I stepped in barley an hour ago,” he replied and took a sip from his glass.
Ryan nodded. “Well, how did the meeting go? You seem deep in thought," he observed.
"Just pondering life, man," Alexander replied. “Meeting went well,” he added dryly.
“I trust so,” Ryan said, taking the hint. His friend obviously didn’t want to talk about his trip, nor was it the thing on his mind right then. “And what’s it about life you’re pondering?” he pressed on.
“What’s good for man, my friend?” Alex asked, his expression blank.
“Money. Food. Women.” Ryan replied without missing a beat. Alex let out a soft laugh. “Well, you know, you have the first two,” Ryan continued. “Remains the last.”
“Please stop it, man. I’m not cut out for that right now,” Alex protested, wondering how Ryan always seemed to read his mind perfectly.
Yes, money and the luxuries of life apart, he did at times felt an emptiness deep within him, just like now. Yet he was tired of the shallow relationships he’d had in the past and had grown wary of women who only wanted to be near him because of his wealth. He was content with his bachelor life, but at times, he felt lonesome.
"Anyway, news reaching me has it that the new head of marketing has resumed at your company today,” Ryan said with a smile. “Some cheerful news at least,” he added smugly.
Alexander raised an eyebrow. "Really? You know I’ve been away for the last couple of days. And yes, we really need some badass marketer. Our performance has been pretty poor of late. He’ll better be good.”
"News flash: it’s a she. As in original she," Ryan said, making the both of them laugh. "She comes highly recommended by the way, and has a great track record in marketing,” he continued. “I think she might just be what you need to rekindle the flame in Grey Enterprises. Because what is business without a badass marketing?"
“You’ve got it,” Alexander said, pleased with his friend. Ryan always had the right thinking when it came to business strategies, and that only added more value to their friendship. “But why do I feel like there’s a conspiracy going on about me?” he asked as an afterthought. “You asked to see the candidates for the role, Ryan. Why do I feel this is your handpicked candidate?”
“Not exactly, your majesty,” Ryan said with a hint of humor, “but her credentials and experiences beat the rest by a wide margin, so I specifically pointed those to the HR. He had the final say of course.”
Alex sighed. “So should I be excited about the new marketing diva I’m yet to meet, Ryan?” he asked, his eyes fixed on his friend, the way a predator eyes its prey.
“Well, as your best friend, trust me to know what is best Grey Enterprise and Mr. Grey, the enterprise himself,” Ryan added, teasing.
The drink seemed to have dried up in Alex’s throat. He shook his head. “I refuse to think an inch further on this,” he said, scanning the content of his glass and reaching out for the bottle to refill it. “So I’ll keep an open mind. I just hope she is good at what she does. Maybe she can surprise me,” he added, handling the bottle to his friend.
“Maybe,” Ryan returned with a chuckle as he took the bottle and served himself.
Ryan Peterson had been Alexander’s long-time friend and righthand man who would often go to any length to make his friends comfortable. But at times he could go way too far and right now Alex could sense that he had some naughty game up his sleeves.
He stole a glance at him from a corner of his eye. “This man must be stopped,” he muttered over his glass. “Ryan Peterson must be stopped!”

Alexander glanced at his watch, knowing that he had a meeting with the new head of marketing in just a few minutes.
A knock sounded on the door, and his personal assistant, Samantha, walked in. "Excuse me, Mr. Grey, but your meeting with Ms. Parker is about to start."
Mr. Grey was known for his no-nonsense approach to both business and life, and he expected nothing but the best from those around him.
Alexander nodded, standing up from his desk. "Thank you, Samantha. Please show her in."
Emily Parker walked into the room and Alexander couldn't help but take notice of her beauty and grace. What he saw of her credentials and work experience so far were impressive just as Ryan had pointed out. Everything about the lady seemed impressive, he thought, wishing she’ll bring nothing but impressive outcomes to his businesses.
Alexander walked over to greet her, extending his hand. "Ms. Parker, it's a pleasure to meet you. Please, have a seat."
Alexander Grey spent several minutes grilling Emily on her marketing strategies while she held her own, proving she was up to the task, and wondering whether she had gotten the job already or not. Alexander Grey was known for his demanding nature, and he didn’t sugarcoat anything for beauty or whatever. He was a principled businessman who knew how to separate work from fun.
Graciously, the meeting came to a close and Alexander stood up. "Thank you for coming in, Ms. Parker. I look forward to seeing the results of your marketing campaigns soonest."
Emily nodded, gathering her things. "Thank you, Mr. Grey. I won't let you down," she said, eager to take her leave. Her boss’ intimidating demeanor did not escape her notice, but she wasn’t going to let that deter her or make her lose focus nor this juicy job.
As she left the room, Alexander couldn't help but think that there was something intriguing about Emily. Despite his reservations about getting involved in a serious relationship, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her than what met the eye.
He shook his head, snapping back to reality. "Focus!" he muttered to himself.
But nothing in the wide world prepared him for the next phase of life that came to him in the person of Emily Parker.
