Chapter 1:Rejected Before the Moon
The full moon hung low over Blackthorn Pack, bathing the ancient stone plaza in silver light.
Tonight was the Moon Bond Ceremony.
The night every werewolf waited for.
The night fate revealed the person destined to become your mate.
Excitement rippled through the crowd as wolves from every family gathered beneath the Moon Goddess's statue. Young warriors stood proudly beside their parents. Noble families whispered about alliances. Children chased one another between the torchlit pathways, unaware that tonight would change countless lives.
Standing near the edge of the plaza, Elara Ashwood folded her hands together to stop them from trembling.
"You look nervous."
Her best friend, Mira, nudged her shoulder with a grin.
"Who wouldn't be?" Elara forced a smile. "What if my mate hates me the moment he sees me?"
Mira rolled her eyes.
"Impossible. You're kind, hardworking, and the best healer in the pack."
Elara laughed softly.
"Kind doesn't matter when everyone thinks you're the weakest wolf in Blackthorn."
Her smile faded.
She was twenty years old.
Yet she had never shifted.
In a world where strength meant everything, being unable to summon her wolf made her an outcast.
Some called her cursed.
Others called her useless.
Most simply pitied her.
Only Mira had never looked at her that way.
A horn echoed across the plaza.
The conversations stopped.
Every head turned toward the stone staircase leading to the Alpha's Hall.
Alpha Rowan stepped forward, his silver cloak flowing behind him.
"My people," his voice boomed, "the Moon Goddess watches over us tonight. May every soul accept the destiny written beneath her light."
The crowd bowed their heads.
Elara closed her eyes.
Please...
Even if my mate doesn't love me...
Please don't let him be ashamed of me.
The air suddenly grew warm.
A strange silver glow spread across the plaza.
One by one, glowing marks appeared on the wrists of the unmated wolves.
Gasps erupted.
"It has begun."
Elara looked down.
A crescent-shaped mark slowly formed on her wrist.
Her heart raced.
Somewhere in the crowd...
Her mate had received the same mark.
The glowing symbol pulsed once.
Then it pulled her forward.
Almost as if an invisible thread connected two hearts.
Step after step...
The crowd parted.
Whispers followed behind her.
"Who is she walking toward?"
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Elara stopped.
Her breath caught.
Standing only a few feet away was the strongest warrior in Blackthorn.
Alpha Kael Blackthorn.
Tall.
Powerful.
Feared across the northern territories.
His golden eyes met hers.
For one impossible second...
Hope bloomed inside her chest.
Then his expression hardened.
Cold.
Disappointed.
Almost... disgusted.
Silence swallowed the entire plaza.
Kael's voice rang through the night.
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I refuse this bond."
The words struck harder than any blade.
Shock spread through the crowd.
"No way..."
"His mate is the wolf-less healer?"
"How embarrassing..."
Kael took one step back.
"I will never accept a woman who cannot even shift into her wolf."
A murmur of agreement swept through the nobles.
Elara felt every gaze burning into her skin.
Her chest tightened.
She wanted to speak.
To ask why.
To ask what she had done wrong.
But no words came.
Kael turned to the elders.
"I, Alpha Kael Blackthorn, reject Elara Ashwood as my destined mate before the Moon Goddess and before this entire pack."
A sharp pain exploded through Elara's heart.
She staggered backward, clutching her chest.
The mate bond...
He was breaking it.
Tears blurred her vision.
Around her, people whispered.
Some pitied her.
Others laughed.
Above them, the full moon disappeared behind a dark cloud.
And somewhere deep inside Elara...
Something ancient stirred.
Not in pain.
Not in grief.
But in awakening.
