Chapter 1: The Encounter
I am so late, this is Gunna blow. I can hear it now, Thomas Bartholomew Richard Burris Graykoothia the 5th, how dare you be late to my class? That’s not even my name. Crazy old lady. I swear it changes every time I walk in late. Most of the time I walk in late because I’m dealing with my brother Tye. He’s just a baby and my mom needs all the help she can get in the mornings because my father, well let’s just say my father doesn’t help much. Anyway, this morning was no exception. As usual as I was walking out the door, I heard” Hey Tommy?” My mom always called me that, and I strongly disliked it. Come to think of it, she’s the only one. “Can you grab Tye’s cup off the ground and give it to him please?” I could never tell her no. Seriously if it wasn’t for her, this whole house would burn to the ground. So, I ran back to grab Tye’s cup and SPLAT his bowl of good morning apple sauce and it landed right on my back. f**k, damn it Tye, why did you do that? And, of course, he’s just laughing. I can’t wait till you get older and I can get you back for this. Mom comes around the corner and looks at me and just starts laughing. “Go upstairs Hun, I got this. Get changed quickly, you’re going to be late.”
“Ugh” I said in a normal teenage teenager's whiny voice, as I was running up the stairs. “Excuse me”, my mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs. If I didn’t respond quickly, I most certainly would regret it. “nothing momma sorry”. Nothing I said in a calm but scared voice “uh huh better be nothing” …. So, I ran to my room, got changed and, well, here I am now running down the halls like a crazy person, teachers yelling at me to slow down, almost crashing into lockers. Contemplating missing this whole thing being late for the first hour and slowly deciding to quietly slip into my next hour and miss this whole next experience, I’m about to experience with Mrs. Argentous. Although she did say there was going to be a test today and it was Gunna taking up a large portion of my grade, UGHHHHH can't miss that mom would be heartbroken. I can see it now que the telenovela “Tommy noooo, why? I thought I raised you better than this. I’ve failed you son, I failed.” As she was crying her eyes out. Dad is in the background grunting and well, doing nothing like normal. I swear I don’t know why I keep bringing him into this. Let's just ignore him. Back to my mom, “Tommy whyyyyyy”….Yeah, can’t have that. OK, last corner and I’m there. I turn the corner and BLAM
“Damn it” a scary, angry, mean voice yelled. Papers are flying everywhere, books slamming into the ground, and we finally get to meet …her, the woman that changed my life. The most annoying, stubborn, beautiful, scary, smart, femenina I’ve ever known in my whole 15 years of life. “I am so sorry, I was late and…” “ that you decided to run the halls like a loco, what’s wrong with you? You're already late, why be extra?” “I know it’s just this was the 3rd time this week and here let me get that for you” as I reach for her textbook “No don’t touch it, I got it.” She said ferociously “Seriously, let me help” I tried to insist “You’ve done enough” as she’s sweeping up all her papers, I bend over to pick one of the books I see, and she goes for it as well. Our hands touch if only for a moment and everything around me stops. My mind gets filled with these violent images of people enslaved, creatures with huge red glowing eyes, death, destruction, pure chaos. The images vanished from my head and we snapped back to reality. “uh here’s your book.” I turned towards her, bowed “I’m uh super sorry. I’ve learned my lesson, never going to run down the halls again”. I turned around. That was weird. It was probably nothing I thought of at the time, but little did I know that moment was going to be the moment that set up a series of events that completely altered my way of living.
I opened the door to Mrs. Argentos class, the overwhelming noise from the kids talking over each other quickly disappears as the door shuts behind me. Everyone turns in their seats and suddenly I have 21 pairs of eyes looking right at me. And then it begins, the voice of pure evil. You know the kind of voice that keeps you up at night, the kind of voice that makes babies cry “Everyone sit down and turn around. Thomas…?” “Mrs. Argentos” I said back with a cocky tone. Let me pause for a minute and explain this vial woman. Mrs. Agatha Corinthian Argentos. I have no idea if that was her first and middle name, but that is beside the point. She is about 150 years old, and wears a black dress like she's straight out of that scary movie. You know the one that has that creepy poem. “Beware the stair of Mary Shaw, sha had no children, only dolls”. Yes, that one. Wears way too much black eye liner. And talks like the sister Winifred from Hocus Pocus, que evil laugh. Like I said evil…. “How many times are we going to go through this? Look at the disturbance you create by walking into my class late. Have you talked to your mother about this, and have you explained the importance of being on time” she says as she walks toward me almost as if she’s floating like a ghost. I swear her top half had no bounce, almost as if she’s gliding in the air. “Listen” as she lays her hands on my shoulder “I think we…” Suddenly the door opens behind me all I can think is saved by the bell. “Um hi, is this Mrs. Argento's class for ap English?”
That voice, no way! I slowly looked around the wickedly broad shoulders of Mrs. Argento's to see her. That girl from earlier. Ah hell no, she got those evil hands. I quickly said “I promise it won’t happen again”. I duck under Mrs. Argento's hands and quickly took my seat. My friends that sit next to me are snickering, trying to hold in the laughter that is about to explode. “Shut up” I say under my breath. “Ahh yes, you must be Christine. Our class starts at 8 Christine, I assume you have a good reason for being late” “Oh, you mean aside from this being my first day and some random BOY...” She says like a dagger. “...Running down that hall like a crazy person and running into me. Knocking me to the floor. I would say that would be a good reason.” “Oh, I see, well, in that case take a seat, but let this be a warning. Everyone gets one. Next time, I suggest keeping your papers in a book bag. You never know when you’ll be hit with STUPITIDITY”. again Daggers.
As I look around the room, I notice something even more awesome. The only desk that is open is the one to my left. She looks around the room, lets out a sigh and walks over and for the next 40 minutes I can feel her staring into my soul. I can't tell you why, but I was almost scared to look in her direction. I mean, what was that anyway? I’ve never seen something so scary in my life and yet it felt as if I was there like I was the one who was … “Thomas, do you agree?” MRS. Argentos says “oh, umm yeah absolutely!”, I answered with confidence “Yeah, what do you agree with?” she asked in her evil voice “I agree that after the Mexican government didn’t have anything to fear it was only a matter of time before his empire crumbled.” I was always good at that, listening to things around me, even though I'm not totally there, my mind tends to wonder, so having this superpower saves me. I honestly think it's why she hates me, because I will be in my own world and still crush her random ass questions. “Hmmm OK, good job. Now what events lead up to Pablo’s fatal night?” As she continues her lecture, my mind, as I said earlier, tends to wonder. I try to stay away from those evil thoughts, but I keep having flashbacks. I can't get those violent images out of my mind …. Finally, the clock strikes 10am and I can breathe again. The bell rang and I was out of there. Although I didn’t see her for the rest of the day. I said goodbye to all my friends as I walked through the front doors of my school and walked down the steps. As I turned to walk towards my way home, I got a cold shiver down my spine. “Help me” I heard a whisper say. I quickly turned around and nothing. No one was there. Immediately I started walking home, I obviously needed some sleep.
