The air was heavier than usual with silence as I tossed the last of our bag into the trunk.
No one said a word. It was almost like a pact we had signed. That no one was allowed to speak.
My brothers remained behind me like silent shadows, their faces a tight blend of worry and anger and something else I didn’t have a name for.
We were all holding it in— every damn emotion— like it would shatter us if we spoke too soon.
I slammed the trunk shut.
“Let’s go,” I said gruffly, brushing past Jamie without looking at him.
My hands were already on the steering wheel before they had even climbed in.
“Are you sure this is smart?” Jamie said once we were all in and moving. His voice was too calm. Too careful.
