Amber was gone but not kidnapped this time, not hurt or hunted. She was gone by choice.
She had gone because we let her down. We made the mistake of trusting someone we shouldn’t have. And now the girl we were destined to protect didn’t even want to look at us.
Jamie had been pacing all morning, muttering half-formed plans under his breath. Ethan was silent — which for him was worse than shouting. And Toby? He hadn’t slept. None of us had.
“We go to her,” I said.
Jamie looked up, blinking. “What?”
“I said we go to her. Now. Today. Before she slips too far away from us.”
Toby sat up straighter. “You think she’ll even open the door?”
“Maybe not,” I admitted. “But we have to try.”
