The air outside was cool, the moon riding high above the thick blanket of trees that flanked both sides of the road. Yet, despite the beauty of the night, there was no peace in my heart. None of us spoke much as the car ate up the distance between the Greenfield pack and our pack.
I sat in the back seat, staring out the window. In my chest, my heart pounded with a mix of dread and fury. The image of our mother bloodied, her face swollen and bruised from the beating our father had given her, would not leave me. Every time I blinked, I saw it again—the hopelessness in her eyes, the silent cry for help. It freaked me out and filled me with rage all at once.
