I expected Lily to be quiet for a moment, maybe feel the weight of Adrian’s sudden question. But she replied without missing a beat, as if she’d prepared to tell me all along.
“The other mummy always hurt me. She screamed at me, pinched my ear and hit me many times when daddy was at work.” My heart ached as she spoke with so much innocence.
As I stared at her, I got the surge of protective instinct coursing through me.
“Oh, darling,” I murmured as I reached out to hold her small hand in mine. “I’m sorry you had to go through something like that.”
She tugged my arm and added with her small, soft voice, “mummy, please can you promise me one thing?”
A steering sensation stung my heart. Without wasting a breath, I swore to fulfill any wish she had.
