Chapter 01: The Zap
Chapter 01: The Zap
My mom is immortal, so as my dad. My twin and I were experiment survivors.
We are not some typical family that everyone could expect. We are a family of experiment survivors. Scientist survivors. We both share the same trauma of dr*gs and experiments.
We are a family indeed.
Me and my twin were adopted when we are five and that day was really a blessing for the both us. Because of our parents, we don’t need to attend those “study sessions” anymore. Heaven knows how much we hate studying.
“Cara, you don’t have classes today?” My mom smiled as she caressed my wavy brunette hair.
I didn’t move an inch as I explore her face with my eyes. She has no wrinkles and it even shows that she’s younger than me. Can’t believe this woman is already living for 300 years. I wonder how much pain did she gone through that made her who she is right now.
“She’s not taking her education seriously, Mom,” an annoying voice replied for me.
I shot him with a deadly glare as I send him my telepathic message; “One more word and you’ll be dead.” Instead of being threatened, he just mocked me and kissed mom on her cheeks.
“You two are twins, you should be the ones who are relying to each other,” our mother said while shaking her head as a disapproval.
“Mom, you’re always saying that! Craige and I will never be…” I looked at my twin brother― Craige, before continuing my sentence. I acted as if I am going to puke. “Pwe!”
Mom chuckled while Craige closed his eyes as if he is just calming himself down. We are in that scenario when dad swung the living room’s door open, drenching in sweat and blood is dripping down from his forehead.
“A deer… breached in our garden,” he said panting while the three of rushed towards him.
“Are you okay, honey?!” Mom exclaimed as she guided dad to our sofa.
“Huh? Of course,” dad replied effortlessly.
Craige laughed. “Why are we even worrying? Dad’s immortal! He can’t be killed by a…” He retrained himself from laughing. “… deer.”
He is right. My parents― our parents were immortal and they survived three world wars. It is impossible for them to be killed by a small injury. I looked at mom and dad. They don’t look like someone that are living for more than three centuries. I thought that things like this only happens in movies and I’ve got no idea that these things are can also happen in real life.
We are like a family of vampires.
“Even though your dad’s immortal, it doesn’t mean that he is immune to pain,” Mom said as she looked at me. “Cara, can you please hand me the… the f-first aid kit.”
Why does she looks troubled when she mentioned the first aid kit?
I just shrugged my shoulder and answered “sure” but as I turned my back and took my first step, I felt a different zap in my system as if my whole body took a screenshot and I was shot by an electricity.
As soon as everything feels alright, I saw myself standing near the door of the living door. Craige is closing his eyes while mom is chuckling. My eyebrows furrowed when I realized that this thing already happened earlier.
I didn’t hesitate and grabbed the doorknob as I widely opened the door. The figure of my dad who is drenched in sweat and blood appeared right in front of me. His eyes widened as he looked at me as if he is asking how did I know that he is standing in front of the door.
He pointed at his back. “A deer…” he spoke. “A deer―”
“Breached in our garden?” I continued his sentence making him gasp.
“How did you know?” he unbelievably asked.
It already happened earlier!
“I saw you through our window,” I lied.
He nodded. “Well, I managed to make the deer leave―“
“We need to treat your wounds first, dad,” I cut him immediately.
I’m not sure if immortals can die too but we need to be careful all the time. Having parents as immortals is already crazy for someone who doesn’t know anything about science but as for Craige and I, we accepted it heartfully.
We owe them our lives.
As I guided dad inside, a scenario repeated in a span of seconds as if destiny gave me a chance to alter something in the past minutes. I looked at Mom and Craige as they tell the same statements that they have blurted out earlier.
This just can’t be a coincidence. This is farther to be called a coincidence that I traveled minutes past before dad opened the door. I looked at Craige for a long period of time and seems like he detected my gaze when he looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed.
“What?!” he shouted in a whisper and seems like mom noticed him when she gently tilted her head towards our direction.
“Is there something wrong, sweethearts?” she asked sweetly.
I replied with a smile and shook my head. I pulled the hem of Craige’s shirt and dragged him upstairs. I heard how he cussed several times and fortunately, he didn’t restrain against me.
Obviously, I’m just one push by him.
Once we are inside our bedroom, I didn’t hesitate and shut the door close. I looked at him with my stern look as he fixed his wrinkled clothes with his furrowed eyebrows. He raised his head to meet my eyes.
“What the f*ck is wrong with you?!” he fumed as he clenched his jaw.
“Craige! You need to calm down first.” I hold his hand and tried to calm him down. He’s like a ticking bomb, geez.
He sighed and looked at me with his burning eyes. I blinked once to tell him that he should calm down or else he will be sleeping downstairs tonight. He sighed again and took his hand from my grip and plopped on his blue bed.
“So? What is this ‘so important thing for you and for me to ditch school’?” he lazily asked and gave me the most annoying look that only Craige Ventura possesses.
I took a deep breath before saying a word, “Do you feel anything unusual? Like a scenario is repeating or what-so-ever. Just you being sent again in a certain time.”
He sat up straight. “The hell are you talking about?” he asked with his eyebrows furrowed once again.
I shook my head and turned my back against him. “Never mind. Sorry to interfere with your ‘studies.’”
I think it’s a bad idea to ask him about this. Even though we are twins, it doesn’t mean that he experiences the things that I experience too. That’s not how it works.
“What the f*ck?” I heard him cussed but I shook my head for the nth time and left the room.
As I go downstairs, I saw mom wrapping a bandage on dad’s head and there is still visible bloodstain even though it was wrapped by a bandage.
As soon as they both noticed my presence, they immediately asked a question, “What happened? Why did the two of you run off?”
I shake my head as a response and smiled as I grabbed my bag that is sitting on a couch and hang on my shoulder. I kissed mom on the cheek and hugged dad before taking my leave.
“I’m heading to school now,” I said and they just waved their hand as a goodbye.
As soon as I step a foot outside, I unconsciously looked up at the window of our room when I felt someone is watching me and there, I saw Craige, looking at me as if I am a newly discovered specie.
I muttered “what?” without any sound but to my surprise, he raised his ring finger making me want to head inside again and dip his head in a toilet bowl. I rolled my eyes and crossed the street to avoid any unnecessary actions anymore. I heard something broke but I didn’t pay any attention to it anymore.
Out-of-the-blue, my whole system went cold the moment I heard a screeching sound of car rushing towards my direction. I looked at my right, my face ran out of blood as I gaze at car staggering in the middle of the road, moving from left to right without any precise direction.
Is this the end of me?!
