“Some promises are buried with the dead… others refuse to stay buried.”

Seventeen-year-old Melissa Anderson thought losing her mother was the worst pain she would ever endure.

She was wrong.

Four months after Emily Anderson’s sudden death, the warmth that once filled their home has been replaced by silence, unanswered questions, and a father who seems to be carrying a burden too heavy for words. Determined to help them heal, Emily’s lifelong best friend, Catherine Brooks, moves into their home with her daughter, offering comfort when the Anderson family needs it most.

But not every act of kindness is born from love.

As Melissa begins to uncover the memories her mother left behind, she realizes that grief has a way of exposing secrets people would kill to keep hidden. Every letter, every photograph, and every whispered promise draws her closer to a truth capable of destroying everything she believes about family, loyalty, and forgiveness.

Then fate brings her face to face with Zikel Moretti—the cold, feared leader of the Obsidian Circle. A man whose world is ruled by blood, power, and revenge. A man who never expected to fall in love.

As love blossoms in the middle of betrayal, old sins return to demand justice, hidden enemies emerge from the shadows, and Melissa is forced to confront a heartbreaking question:

Can a heart survive the truth when the people who broke it are the ones it loves the most?

Because sometimes…

The deepest wounds aren’t left by strangers.

They’re left by family.

And sometimes…

The only thing more painful than losing someone you love…

…is discovering they never truly left you.

PROLOGUE
**The Woman Who Knew Too Much** The rain came down in relentless sheets, swallowing the quiet suburban street beneath a curtain of darkness. A woman ran. Her chest burned with every desperate breath as she clutched a leather journal tightly against her body. Mud splashed onto the hem of her lavender dress, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. She glanced over her shoulder. No one. Yet. Still… She knew they were coming. The streetlights flickered overhead, casting trembling shadows across the empty road. Her hands shook so violently that she almost dropped the journal. “Please…” Her whisper disappeared beneath the roar of thunder. “Just let me make it home.” She turned sharply into a narrow path leading toward a small, abandoned greenhouse hidden behind an old church. Few people knew it existed anymore. That was exactly why she had chosen it. She pushed open the creaking wooden door and hurried inside. The greenhouse smelled of damp earth and forgotten memories. Moonlight slipped through the cracked glass roof, illuminating broken flowerpots and climbing vines. Emily Anderson fell to her knees. Her fingers trembled as she opened the leather journal. Inside were handwritten notes. Photographs. Medical reports. Bank statements. A folded DNA test request she had never submitted. And one photograph that made tears sting her eyes. Three smiling faces. Emily. Jason. Catherine. She stared at it for a long moment before pulling it free. “I trusted you…” Her voice broke. “I trusted both of you.” She closed her eyes. The memories came rushing back. A conversation she was never supposed to hear. A lie that didn’t make sense. A bottle of medication that had mysteriously changed. The insurance policy Jason had taken out months before her “illness.” It had all seemed like coincidences… Until they weren’t. She swallowed hard. “If anything happens to me…” She tore a blank page from the back of the journal and began writing. Not quickly. Carefully. Every word mattered. When she finished, she folded the page and slipped it into a small ivory envelope. Across the front, she wrote: For Melissa. She kissed the envelope softly. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.” “I wanted to tell you myself.” A tear rolled down her cheek. She quickly wiped it away. “No…” “You don’t get to cry.” “You have to finish this.” Emily stood and walked toward an old wooden cabinet at the far end of the greenhouse. Behind it was a loose brick. She pulled it free. A small hollow space. She placed the journal inside. Then the envelope. Then a silver key attached to a thin purple ribbon. She carefully returned the brick to its place. “No one will find it.” She whispered the words as if trying to convince herself. A loud c***k echoed outside. Emily froze. Footsteps. Slow. Steady. Crunching over wet gravel. Someone had found her. Her breathing became shallow. “No…” Another step. Closer. Closer. The greenhouse door creaked open. A silhouette stood in the entrance. Hidden by darkness. Rainwater dripped from the figure’s coat onto the wooden floor. Emily’s lips parted. “You…” Her voice was barely audible. “…how did you know I was here?” The figure took another step. Still silent. Emily backed away until she hit the wall. Tears blurred her vision. “I begged you…” “I would’ve left.” “I would’ve taken Melissa and disappeared.” The figure finally spoke. One calm sentence. “You know too much.” Emily stared in disbelief. “So…” “It really was you.” Another flash of lightning illuminated the greenhouse. Only for an instant. Just long enough for Emily to recognize the person standing before her. Her face crumpled. Not with fear. With heartbreak. “You were my family.” Silence. The figure reached slowly into a coat pocket. Emily shook her head. “No…” “Please…” “For Melissa…” Thunder exploded across the sky. The lights flickered. Then… Darkness. Four Months Later… Melissa Anderson woke with tears already drying on her cheeks. Again.
