Chapter 1: The Shifting Grounds
POV: Elara The moon was full, an ominous silver eye staring down on me, indifferent and merciless. I stood barefoot in the heart of the Shifting Grounds, the icy grass prickling my feet through the sheer fabric of the ceremonial dress. My breath came out in clouds, though my skin burned beneath the weight of hundreds of eyes. They surrounded me. My pack. My people. My executioners. "She’s eighteen now," someone whispered. “She’ll shift this time,” another voice said, hopeful. But not for me, for their sense of order. For the relief that the freak among them might finally be normal. But I already knew. Nothing about me was normal. My heart pounded as Alpha Darius’s voice boomed across the field. “Elara Ashwood, step forward.” I didn’t move. Not until a hand roughly shoved me from behind. Isolde. Her nails bit into my arm as she hissed near my ear, “Don’t embarrass Father. Again.” Then she smiled sweetly as I stumbled forward under the cruel gaze of the Alpha. I felt the sting of tears but refused to let them fall. Instead, I lifted my chin, letting the moonlight illuminate my pale face. Let them see me. Let them judge. “Tonight, under the blessing of the Moon Goddess,” Alpha Darius said, “you will take your rightful place among us. Shift, Omega.” A hush fell. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. I stood alone in the center of the clearing, my chest heaving as pressure built behind my eyes. My bones ached as they always did when I pretended I hadn’t already shifted years ago. When I forced my wolf back, hidden, silent, caged. The truth would ruin everything. So, I lied. I pretended again. Nothing happened. Gasps rippled through the crowd like fire through dry leaves. “She’s still not shifting.” “She’s defective.” “Is she even a real wolf?” My sister’s laughter rang out, bright and vicious. “Poor Elara. Maybe she’s more human than wolf.” Someone spat on the ground. Shame burned across my skin. My wolf growled inside me, furious, restless. But I clamped down hard. If I shifted here, they'd see what I was, and they’d never let me live. The legendary White Wolf wasn’t supposed to exist. Certainly not as the youngest daughter of a disgraced Beta. Not as me. So, I did nothing. I let them laugh. I let them hate me. Alpha Darius’s face twisted in disgust. “You shame your lineage, Elara. You shame this pack.” I looked at my father, standing at the edge of the crowd beside Isolde. He didn’t defend me. His eyes were heavy with something worse than disappointment, regret. Like he wished I’d never been born. “Then I reject her,” said another voice, loud and clear. Ronan Blackthorn. My mate. Pain slammed through me like a blade to the chest. Every nerve lit up with heat and betrayal as my head snapped to the Alpha Heir of Silvermoon Pack. He stood tall, his golden hair gleaming like a crown, his jaw hard with disgust. “I, Ronan Blackthorn, Alpha Heir of this pack, reject Elara Ashwood as my mate.” There was a collective gasp. And then silence. The bond between us snapped like a frayed wire. I swayed on my feet, dizziness crashing over me. My heart screamed even as my mouth remained shut. The rejection seared through my soul. I felt it die. Whatever thread the Moon Goddess had spun between us was gone. “Coward,” I whispered. Not loud enough for anyone but me. The rejection ceremony ended not with a shift, not with glory, but with my utter humiliation. The crowd dispersed, murmuring. Some were pitying. Most were cruel. I remained rooted to the spot. Numb. Until he arrived. A new scent drifted in, foreign, powerful, ancient. The air thickened. The wind changed direction. And then he stepped into the clearing. Tall. Broad. A presence so potent it bent the attention of every wolf to him. Alpha Kael Valtair. The Alpha King. His dark armor gleamed under the moonlight. A black cloak, lined in silver fur, trailed behind him like shadow incarnate. His gold ringed eyes locked onto me like a predator scenting blood. Whispers turned into a stunned hush. What was the Alpha King doing here? “Alpha Kael,” Darius said, bowing low. “We weren’t expecting” Kael held up a hand, silencing him. He didn’t look at Darius. Or Ronan. Or my father. His gaze never left me. And gods, it scorched. “I smelled something,” Kael said softly. “Something that does not belong here.” The wind howled again. He walked toward me, every step slow, deliberate. The world tilted. My knees wobbled, and I clenched my fists. “Who are you, girl?” he asked when he reached me. “Elara,” I managed. My voice trembled. “Elara Ashwood.” He circled me once, slow as a lion studying prey. Or perhaps something far more dangerous. “Your wolf,” he said. “Why is it silent?” “I… I can’t shift,” I lied, my voice barely audible. His eyes narrowed. “Can’t? Or won’t?” My heart thundered. I said nothing. He reached out slowly, carefully, and placed a hand over my heart. Heat shot through me, and I flinched. But his touch wasn’t cruel. It was steady. Grounding. “You’re hiding something,” he said, his voice a low murmur only I could hear. “But not from me.” A second later, his gold-ringed eyes flared with light. And I knew. He saw her. My wolf. My secret. The White Wolf. I sucked in a breath as power shimmered between us. Mate. It wasn’t the sharp, burning tether I’d felt with Ronan. This was something older. Deeper. More primal. I took a step back. “You can’t. You don’t want” “I claim her,” Kael said, loud enough for all to hear. Every jaw dropped. Alpha Darius choked. “Your Majesty?” Kael turned toward him, voice cold as winter steel. “This girl is mine. The Moon Goddess marked her, and I answered.” “No,” Ronan barked. “She’s an Omega. She was rejected.” “She is not weak,” Kael growled. “She is not yours to reject. She is mine to protect.” Gasps. Shock. My sister’s shriek cut through the chaos. “You can’t just take her!” Kael turned to her slowly. “Would you like to challenge me, Beta Heir?” Isolde paled. “I’ll be taking Elara back to Eclipse Dominion,” Kael announced. “Effective immediately.” He looked at me once more. There was no softness in his face, no pleading. Just... certainty. He had chosen me. And the terrifying thing? Part of me wanted to go. Wanted to leave behind the ashes of this place. The rejection. The humiliation. The hatred. But fear clawed at my chest. If I left, I couldn’t keep hiding. Kael knew what I was. He could expose me. And yet, when he extended a hand……I took it. Because deep down, I knew. The real danger wasn’t staying in Silvermoon. It was following the Alpha King into a world where my secret might destroy us all.
