Jenna's POV
“Hurry up, Charles. I have a meeting with the principal this morning and I dare not go late!” I yelled for the umpteenth time.
“I'm still in the toilet, I'll be done soon!” Charles shouted back and I wondered if he had to do this now!
“Do you really have to go to the toilet now?!” I complained as I looked at the wall clock and then down at my wristwatch. s**t! I was going to be late
“I don't get to tell it when it should come, I am pressed so here I am in the toilet,”
I gnashed my teeth as I almost roared in anger,
“Well, get it done fast!”
He spent another ten minutes in the bathroom before he finally came out. I stared at my four-year-old son and felt like swatting his head,
“If I get scolded—-”
“Just tell them your dear son has a running stomach,” he suggested as he picked up his bag and made his way out of the house.
When I got out, he was already seated in the front passenger's seat with the seatbelt on. I shook my head and walked over to the driver's seat.
Sometimes, I want to say like father like son but I always hold myself back. Kai was naughty, playful, and carefree, the same with Charles. But Charles will never be like his father because I'll never raise my son to be a cheat. He won't womanize and he would love only two women, his mother, and his wife as I don't plan to get married or have any other child.
My thoughts went wide as always until we got to school,
“See you later, Mom” he kissed my right cheek before coming down and running off to class. A wide smile appeared on my lips as I watched him meet up with his friends.
Looking at them, I narrowed my eyes. Why does it look like they all came at the same time?
“s**t! Charles tricked me!” I muttered. He planned it with his friends! I'll deal with him later.
I marched to the principal's office, I was so late!
“Jenna?” I turned around to see Paul jogging to catch up with me,
“Hi, Paul, Good morning, Do you have a meeting with the principal too?” I asked but he shook his head,
“Yes, he told me to meet up with him today by 9 am. I am so late”
“That makes the both of us,” I murmured as I increased my pace. We got to the principal's office and knocked.
“Come in” he announced from inside and I opened the door
“Good morning, Principal,” Paul and I greeted simultaneously as we hurried in. There was a man seated before him who didn't bother to look at us
“You both are late!” He spat, glaring at us in anger.
“We're sorry, sir. It was—” I held my breath when the man turned to me. For a moment there, I began dizzy looking at the man in front of me. His eyes narrowed but immediately went back to normal.
Malakai! What was he doing here?!
My world paused as we stared at each other for heaven knows how long. He didn't say a word neither did I. He didn't act like he knew me, he wasn't doing any of that.
“Miss Jenna, Miss Jenna,” the principal kept calling for my attention, and in slow motion, I turned my head to look at him.
I shivered as I remained in one spot. My heart was racing, my eyes teary and the lump was refusing to go down my throat. I was finding it difficult to breathe. I can't believe that Kai was in front of me.
“Are you okay, Miss Jenna?” Principal Matthew asked and I nodded slowly, praying so hard that the tears didn't roll down my cheeks just yet.
“This is Mr. Malakai Storm, the man who contributed a large sum to art in the school, and as the art teacher, I wanted you to know and appreciate him,” he said to me. It took a while before my brain could register what he was trying to say to me.
“Mr. Malakai, this is Miss Jenna Lauren, she is the best art teacher in Los Angeles”
I slowly took a small bow,
“Thank you” I whispered, trying not to look at Kai. My hands shook as I tried as much as I could to keep myself from showing how shocked I was to see him. My palm is now sweaty and my fingers are trembling.
“Are you okay, Jenna?” Paul asked beside me, he held my arm protectively, and I nodded.
The office suddenly became quiet when I heard,
“It's the least I can do,” Kai's voice rang in the office, “My wife used to be a lover of art. I became interested in it because of her, so contributing to arts in schools is a good way to treasure her memory”
“Huh?” I found myself asking in confusion. What does he mean by that? He turned to look from the principal to me as he said,
“She died, five years ago.”
My heart stopped and fell down to my stomach as I stared at Kai in shock. What is he doing? How… How dare he?!
“I'm so sorry for your loss, sir” Paul spoke in a sentimental mood and Kai had the guts to nod.
“It's okay. Nothing lasts forever,” he let out a smile that didn't reach his eyes before he stood up.
“I'll take my leave now, Principal Matthew.”
“Yes, yes, Thank you for your time, Mr. Malakai, we'll speak some more on the phone. I really wished you could stay for the art presentation but I understand how business can be” They shook hands.
Kai didn't spare me a look as he walked out of the office not bothering to say goodbye to me. My heart squeezed in my chest and I just don't know why. What was Kai doing here in the school where I teach?
Did he know I was here? I'll have to get out of here with my son. I'll have to leave this school and Los Angeles for good.
