Chapter 1: A Man of Ice
It was three o'clock in the morning.
On the forty-fifth floor of the glass tower overlooking the sprawling city with its pale, shimmering lights, the only sound was the faint hum of the central air conditioning and the harsh pitter-patter of rain against the insulated glass window.
In the center of the expansive office with its black marble floor stood Selim Al-Hashimi.
A man in his thirties at the peak of his power and influence, tall with a tightly conditioned physique, seemingly sculpted to fit his custom Italian suits. One hand rested in his trouser pocket, while the other held a crystal glass reflecting the distant lights of the city. Dark blue eyes held a gaze of crushing coldness—a look that revealed no emotion, betrayed no secret, yet read everyone standing before him like an open book.
To the world of business and finance, Selim Al-Hashimi was not merely the Chairman of the Board of "Al-Hashimi Construction and Investment" empire; he was "The Ice Locomotive." The man who slept only four hours, never smiled in meetings, and never lost a deal he entered. The mind that converted numbers into clout, and clout into absolute authority.
Yet behind this concrete wall of austerity lay another side—a far more dangerous one.
On the wide leather sofa in a corner of the luxurious office reclined a beautiful woman wearing a black silk dress slipping casually off her shoulder. Her breathing was steady, her gaze pursuing his broad back with a curiosity and passion she couldn't hide. She was a prominent socialite, a woman courted by camera lenses, but here in this tower, she was nothing more than a passing pit stop in his dense schedule.
She sighed softly, leaning on her arm and looking up at him with dark-kohl eyes:
"Selim... won't you stop thinking about work for even a minute? It's past three o'clock... come here."
He didn't turn to her right away. Taking a slow sip from his glass, he let the liquid coolly slide down his throat before turning his full body toward her. His movements were calculated, carrying a presence and danger that made hearts flutter around him. Taking slow, purposeful steps toward the sofa, he sat on its edge, placing his calm weight near her.
He reached out slowly, his long, warm fingers gently tracing her jawline and sliding up into her dark hair. Her breath hitched, her eyes burning with immediate desire. To Selim, relationships were merely transparent body language—pure physical pleasure to strip away the day's pressure, without any woman ever daring to touch the sealed space within his chest.
Leaning in, he brought his lips down upon hers in a deep, burning kiss, completely stripped of any affection. He was fully aware of his capacity for control, mastering how to give pleasure and how to reclaim it whenever he wished. She responded with all her senses, wrapping around him like ivy on a tree, but his cold mind watched the scene from above, like a stranger simply enjoying the game.
After a considerable time, where breath mingled and heat rose within the enclosed room, Selim slowly pulled back. There was no hesitation in his movements, no look of regret, and no excessive display of fondness. Rising to his feet, he casually straightened his white shirt with complete composure.
She looked at him in disbelief, struggling to catch her rapid breath, and said in a broken voice:
"You are so cruel, Selim... You give everything in one moment, then walk away as if nothing happened."
A slight smile formed on his lips, never reaching his dark eyes, as he put his luxury watch back on his wrist:
"I don't promise more than I can offer, Sireen. I agreed to pleasure with you; I never promised to stay."
She opened her mouth to object or show anger, but she knew the rules well. Anyone entering Selim Al-Hashimi’s world must know they are stepping into a sphere of influence devoid of feelings. Relationships for him were strictly bound to the moment, their effect ending the second he fastened his cuff links.
He gestured toward the door, speaking in a calm, resonant tone that carried an unquestionable authority:
"The driver is waiting for you downstairs. He will take care of delivering you home safely."
She stood up, gathering her dress and belongings, trying to salvage her remaining pride, while he returned to his broad desk and opened his laptop, as if the page had been turned entirely before she even closed the office door.
Selim sat before the glowing screens. The passing spark of pleasure died out, allowing the ice to reclaim every cell in his body. He opened the trading files and read through the financial reports for the stock market and construction sectors.
For Selim Al-Hashimi's world, control was the very air he breathed. Raised in a family that never acknowledged weakness, his father—a stern financial lord—had taught him from an early age that desires, if uncurbed and unscheduled to serve the mind, become a vulnerability exploited by enemies. Thus, Selim made a fortress of his body and mind; taking pleasure when needed like food and water, but never allowing a single woman to cross his private boundary lines or read what lay behind his dark blue eyes.
At precisely four o'clock in the morning, his encrypted phone rang.
He picked up the phone, resting it between his ear and shoulder as he flipped through financial documents:
"Speak, Amjad."
The voice of his executive director and right-hand man, Amjad, came through, laced with an unusual tone of tension:
"Mr. Selim... Apologies for disturbing you at this hour, but an unexpected development has occurred in the market."
Selim sat up straight, his icy gaze sharpening into falcon-like intensity:
"What is it?"
Amjad: "Sheikh Mansour Al-Qadi... the biggest competitor to our company and 'Al-Rifai' firm... passed away two hours ago at his hospital in Paris."
Selim’s hand stopped mid-turn on the papers.
Mansour Al-Qadi... the man who for decades represented the cornerstone of the investment and development market, the fierce competitor who had constantly clashed with the Al-Hashimi and Al-Rifai families over major projects, was now departing the scene.
Selim spoke in a low, deep voice, weighing every word:
"Mansour's death will completely reshuffle the market's cards... What happened to the stocks?"
Amjad: "Trading on the stocks is suspended until morning, but the issue isn't just the stocks, Selim... Mansour Al-Qadi’s private lawyer has called an emergency meeting tomorrow morning to open the sealed will. You have been summoned personally, along with..."
Amjad paused for a few seconds, as if hesitating to pronounce the name.
Selim narrowed his eyes, asking in a dry tone:
"Summoned whom, Amjad? Speak."
Amjad cautiously replied: "Summoned Nour Al-Rifai... Chairwoman of the Board of Al-Rifai Enterprises."
At the sound of that name, Selim’s fists clenched tightly on the marble surface of his desk.
Nour Al-Rifai.
The name that sparked a mixture of anger, disdain, and sharp alertness within his chest. The daughter of Kamal Al-Rifai, his family's historical enemy. The woman who dared to challenge him in the fiercest commercial deal over the past two years, and who managed her father's empire following his illness with a style that provoked his stern mind—a style rooted in emotion, passion, and direct intuition, far removed from the raw numbers he worshipped.
Selim remembered vividly the few encounters that brought them together at business conventions. She stood before him with rebellious poise, her wide eyes gleaming with bold defiance, her head held high with a dignity that refused to bow to his authority. She was unlike any other woman who crossed his path; she wasn't awed by his clout, nor did she back down before his intimidating glares. She was a fierce rival, bearing the weight of a thirty-year family feud stained with legal battles and stolen projects.
A cold smile broke across Selim’s face, revealing his teeth in a muted threat:
"Nour Al-Rifai... So the old man Mansour decided to play his final move from the grave."
Amjad: "What shall we do, Selim? The lawyer insists on both of your presence together to hear the reading of the will, emphasizing that Mansour left an order impacting the future of both companies."
Selim rose from his chair, walking toward the massive glass window. The rain outside seemed to wash away the city's grime, while his reflection on the glass appeared like an unforgiving marble statue.
He spoke in a firm, resolute tone:
"Have the car ready at eight in the morning. I will attend this meeting... I want to see how that bold woman will face the reality that the business world has no mercy for the weak."
Amjad: "Understood, Mr. Selim. But... be careful, it's reported that Al-Rifai has mobilized her legal advisors since early morning."
Selim, ending the call:
"Let her mobilize as many advisors as she wishes, Amjad... In the end, lions do not fear the number of sheep."
Selim tossed the phone onto the desk, standing tall as he took in his upright posture in the glass reflection.
Fleeting affairs, cheap passion, transient pleasure... all were merely tools to drain his physical energy. But the true battle, the genuine passion that stirred his blood, was always on the battlefield—where power, influence, and the crushing of enemies lay.
He recalled Nour Al-Rifai’s features: her natural face free of excessive makeup, her porcelain-like skin, and her eyes carrying a rebellious purity that refused to break. He remembered how she used to ignore his presence in crowded halls, as if viewing him as nothing more than a wall of ice undeserving of attention.
A strange, dark, and sharp sensation crossed his mind—a desire to shatter that arrogance, to strip that pure woman of her emotional armor, and force her to yield to his authority.
"Nour Al-Rifai..." Selim murmured the name slowly between his lips, as though tasting the flavor of the upcoming challenge. "We shall see which of us smiles in the end."
Selim put on his tailored black blazer, adjusted his shirt collar, and grabbed his leather briefcase. He had no idea that this morning would not be just another business deal, nor merely another round in the family feud; it would be the first step into the quagmire that would shake the throne of his coolness and strike his icy heart with an unquenchable spark.
He walked out of his office with confident strides, surrounded by an aura of power and dominance that compelled everyone in the tower to step aside in deference and awe.
He was a man who lived for the pleasure of authority... until he encountered the storm that would teach him pleasure of an entirely different kind.
