1. The Discovery
Enid pushed open the door to Dovey's corner office, expecting to find him hunched over his laptop as usual. Instead, she found her husband of three years buried deep inside his business partner, Miriam's legs wrapped around his waist as she moaned against his desk.
The papers in Enid's hand crumpled as her fist tightened. Neither of them had noticed her yet. Miriam's head was thrown back with her eyes closed, while Dovey thrust inside and out of her.
"Well, this saves me from having to explain why I'm here," Enid said.
Dovey jerked away from Miriam so fast he stumbled backward into his chair. His pants were around his ankles, his shirt unbuttoned.
Miriam scrambled to pull her skirt down, her face flushed with embarrassment.
"Enid, I…." Dovey started.
"Don't." She held up her hand. "I already know about the company theft. This just confirms what kind of man you really are."
She threw the papers onto his desk, right where Miriam had been spread moments before. The papers scattered across the table, some landing on the floor.
"You stole my family's company," she continued, her voice steady despite the rage burning in her chest. "Forged my signatures, and went as far as transferring everything to her corporation. Did you think I'd never find out?"
Dovey pulled up his pants, his hands shaking. "It's not what you think."
"It's exactly what I think." Enid pulled out her phone and showed him the bank statements she'd gotten that morning. "Knuckles Manufacturing, founded by my grandfather, owned by my family for sixty years, now belongs to Miriam Gaillard Industries. The transfer happened six months ago."
Miriam slid off the desk, adjusting her blouse. "Enid, you need to understand…"
"I understand perfectly." Enid's eyes never left Dovey's face. "You needed my company's assets to secure that government contract. Instead of asking your wife for help, you decided to steal from her."
"Your company was failing," Dovey said, finally meeting her gaze. "At least this way, it served a purpose."
The casual dismissal pained her more than seeing them together. "So my family's legacy served a purpose now by funding your affair?"
"This isn't about Miriam."
"Everything is about Miriam." Enid gestured at the woman still straightening her clothes. "The late nights, the business trips, the new jewelry you claimed was for me but you never gave me." She pulled a velvet box from her purse and tossed it onto the desk. "I found this in your car yesterday. The receipt was dated three weeks ago."
Dovey stared at the diamond bracelet he'd bought for his mistress. "Enid…"
"I've already filed for divorce. You'll be served officially on Monday, but I thought you deserved to know first." She turned toward the door, then paused. "Oh, and I've scheduled a press conference for tomorrow morning. The business community should know about your innovative acquisition methods."
"You can't be serious."
"Watch the news." She opened the door, then looked back one last time. "By the way, your security cameras have excellent resolution. My lawyer was very impressed with the footage."
Dovey's face went white. "What footage?"
"The footage of you and Miriam celebrating your successful theft of my company. Right here in this office three days ago." She smiled coldly. "You really should be more careful about where you conduct your business meetings."
"Enid, wait…"
But she was already gone, her heels echoing from the hallway. Behind her, she could hear Dovey scrambling to arrange the office, Miriam's panicked voice asking about the cameras.
The elevator doors closed just as Dovey burst into the hallway, still trying to wear his shoe.
Enid could hear him pound on the elevator doors, yelling some words she couldn't hear and didn't want to.
Her phone buzzed in her hand. And as she checked, it was text from her lawyer:
"The Papers are filed and will be sent by Monday. And the press are ready for tomorrow. Are you sure about this?"
She typed back: "Yes, I am more than sure. "
The elevator reached the ground floor. Enid walked through the lobby of Addams Industries, past the reception desk where she'd visited countless times as the CEO's devoted wife.
The security guard nodded respectfully, not knowing he'd just watched the beginning of Dovey's empire's collapse.
Outside, Enid put on her sunglasses and walked toward her car, finally allowing herself to feel the full weight of what she'd discovered.
Her marriage was over. Her family's company was gone. But tomorrow, everyone would know exactly what kind of man Dovey Addams really was.
And that was just the beginning.
