Chapter One
Madison
"Friend, where are you? Hannah has been asking me about you for a long time, I don't know what excuse to give anymore." Chloe whispers desperately on the other end of the line.
Snort.
"I'm coming, I promise. I'll be there in five minutes." I answer him, breathing a little heavily, as I'm practically running.
"Alright, don't be long." She hangs up and I quickly put my phone in my pocket.
This has been my daily routine for a few months now, rush after rush. I've been working as a waitress for as long as I can remember, but over the years things have changed and I've been forced to change my strategy too. Because I lost my parents very early, I was raised by my grandmother, who is a wonderful woman and I am grateful to her for everything.
However, her health has been increasingly weakened, as she has been a lifelong smoker, we recently discovered cancer in her lungs, which has made me race against time to find a new job, since, being a waitress, I would never be able to pay all the expenses for her treatment, the medications she uses and keep us with food on the table every day.
For this reason, I need a job urgently and, right now, I'm running to the cafeteria, after submitting resumes to several companies and hearing one: we will keep your information in our database, in case we need it.
Seriously, I'm tired of this! It's not that difficult to hire a well-qualified person like me, it's okay that I'm not experienced, but that's not my fault, if they don't give me the opportunity to learn.
Finally he arrived at the cafeteria, panting and feeling sweat running down my forehead. I storm through the door, trying not to be seen by Hannah, my boss. I go to the kitchen, to put my things in the closet and start the day, as soon as I open the door, I see Chloe.
"Thank God!" she exclaims exaggeratedly and gestures, showing distress.
"I'm sorry, friend", I take a deep breath, controlling my breathing, as I put on my apron "I promise this was the last time.
Chloe rolls her eyes.
"You say that every day, so don't even come with that nonsense." I give a nasal laugh, because I know she's right.
"Come on! I don't plan on getting fired, and Hannah is certainly mad at me." I comment as we leave the kitchen and head to the counter.
"You're late, Madison." we face our boss's frown.
My eyes bulge, because I didn't think I would be caught in the act, since Chloe always has my back. Okay, this doesn't always work out.
"I promise this was the last time, Hannah." I answer him distressed, because I can't risk losing this job.
"I hope so, or there won't be a next one", she says through gritted teeth and I nod with a shake of my head. "Now you're going to justify your salary.
"Like it's a big deal...", I comment to Chloe, when we move away from her. My friend laughs.
"At least it pays the bills, friend. And how was today?", refers to my job search.
I take a deep breath, deflating my shoulders.
"I mean, how come it wasn't, right? I don't know what else to do, even though I graduated, I can't achieve anything." I purse my lips.
"Calm down, Madin... I know you'll make it. Tonight we'll look online together, it's not impossible that we won't find something." I smile knowing that I can always count on her.
“Thank you, friend.”
We are interrupted by some customers arriving.
(...)
The end of our shift finally comes, after an extremely busy day. Before going home, we cleaned everything, as it is a rule that Hannah imposed, saying that this would make our lives easier when we arrived at work the next day. Pure nonsense, every time we arrive we have to clean again.
After that, we called a taxi and headed to my house.
"I'm exhausted!" I say as soon as we enter, as I sit on the couch.
“Don’t tell me, Madin,” Chloe sighs heavily, letting it show how tired she is, “But unfortunately, we don’t have time to rest now, we need to look for job openings for you.”
"Alright, let me check on Grandma." I get up to go to her room, when my friend was about to respond, we heard footsteps coming towards us.
“No need, Miss Stuart,” the nurse I hired to take care of Grandma at home, says to me, “I medicated her just now and she fell asleep right away.”
“How is she, Hailey?”
I sense a certain apprehension in her.
"Please don't hide anything from me...", my voice sounds distressed.
"Her cough is getting worse daily, if we don't get more effective treatment, she may not be able to resist for long." I slump my shoulders when I hear it.
"I don't know what to do anymore...", I say with my head lowered.
"Friend, we can't give up, we will find a solution, not everything is lost." Chloe tries to cheer me up, but the truth is that not even she will be able to accomplish such a feat.
"If you'll excuse me, I'll go to bed." Hailey informs.
I nod my head in agreement and she leaves immediately.
“Madin, you can’t lose heart, I won’t allow it.”
"And what am I going to do, Chloe? Tell me!", I change my tone of voice, "I've been doing this for months and I haven't found a better damn opportunity. I'm fed up!", I let out a long sigh.
"Where's your notebook?", she seems unfazed by my sudden attack of nerves.
"It's in the room." I respond with a frown.
"Go get it, we don't have time to waste." I finally understand what she meant.
I hurriedly walk to my room, grab my notebook and return to the living room.
"Here! While you look, I'll prepare something for us to eat." she agrees, so I head to the kitchen.
As I cook, my thoughts go far, my life has been s**t lately and I don't know what to do to solve so many problems.
I'm so distracted that I don't notice time passing. I wake up to Chloe screaming.
"Friend, run here!", I blink repeatedly, coming out of my trance and placing my hand on my chest in a sign of fright.
"You scared me, girl!" I say as I grab the snacks I made for both of us and walk over to her.
"Sorry, friend. But I think I found the perfect job for you. Look at this!", I sit next to her and she turns the laptop screen towards me, her eyes are shining and I notice expectation in her gaze.
I leave the tray with snacks on the coffee table and take the notebook in her hand.
I read the information carefully and realize that it is a technology company, apparently they are looking for a secretary for the owner.
"Say something, creature!", my friend says in a raised voice, making me laugh.
"It's an excellent opportunity, but I don't know if I'm good for it." Chloe clicks her tongue in her mouth.
"How not, Madin? You are perfect to fill this position, you just graduated with honors in information technology. You will start as a secretary, but you will certainly be promoted to something in your field. You are wonderful and this chance is unique ." Chloe has a habit of talking desperately when she's nervous.
"You can't guarantee that...", I look away from the computer to her.
Chloe snorts.
“Look, listen to me,” she grabs my chin, making me raise my eyebrows, “Okay, that might not happen, but you’re not going to waste a golden opportunity like that.”
I confess that I'm apprehensive about this, this vacancy seems to be from a very recognized company, I don't know if I would fit in. Chloe's right though, I can't give up without trying.
"Alright, I'll go." I say with determination.
"That's how it's said!" she winks at me.
We followed all the instructions on the page to apply for the position and then sent the completed form with my information.
"Now just wait." it says.
After that we went to eat and enjoy the rest of the night, before finally resting from the exhausting day of work.
