Prologue
My body was quivering in fear as I walked through a dark path. Why am I here? Where am I? My eyes were fraught with tears of fright and exhaustion. I’ve been running on the same path for a long time already without having any idea where I’m going.
I was heading home yesterday when I just suddenly passed out in the middle of the road. And now, I am here in a place where I am not even familiar with. I just woke up when a droplet of water from a leave dripped on my forehead. If I hadn’t got drenched by that droplet, I wouldn’t know that I’m not in our home.
I stopped in a park, I can’t even sense the single presence of someone there. The place was all empty and silent. The radiance coming from the moon was the only thing that served as the light in my surroundings.
“Where did she go?” I heard a man’s voice say from somewhere near my direction. The reverberating sound of his three footsteps drawing near me had seeped through my ear.
Who are they? Am I the one they’re searching for?
I looked dumb staring deeply at the dim pathway. Until a man in a black suit heading towards me appeared in my sight.
“There she is! Hurry up!” he shouted when his eyes saw me.
I’m in deep confusion and I don’t understand what’s going on.
What do they need from me? Were they the ones who took me and brought me to this unfamiliar place? What are they planning to do with me?
Trepidation and fear started creeping me. Both of my feet ran away on their own to get far from them. I was afraid of what I could do to them. I am scared. And I don’t know why.
Where am I? Why don’t I remember anything? Where are my parents? I tried recollecting everything from my past but I failed. The faces of my parents were the only things I can remember.
No! No! What’s happening? Where am I? Why can’t I recollect anything!
Tears unawares escaped my swollen eyes and my hands trembled even more. I can still hear the footsteps owned by those who were chasing me.
I ran more quickly as I reached an area full of houses. I turned into a narrow route when a huge man suddenly showed up in front of me. He glared at me with a grimace. There’s an axe with an unordinary design on his right hand. Its size and form isn’t something that you can call common and typical.
I halted without taking off my eyes on him. He was wearing a black coat and tie. He has a huge wound mark on his forehead and his eyes were blazing with hatred.
“I finally found you...” His frightening voice that was congruous like a dead man that had raised from its grave gave me goose bumps and sent shudders to my spine.
“W-who are you?” I tried hiding the fear in my voice but I just can’t contain it. I kept restraining myself from shaking but I can’t.
My feet started to feel sore from constantly running to the point that I can’t feel anything anymore. I slowly took a step back. There’s only one way I can think of—to escape and run far away from this man.
‘What does he needs from me? What did I do?’ I wanted to scream those words in my head just to at least enlighten my confused being and clear everything that had clouded my mind.
“I am the one who will kill you. Isn’t that fun?” He just moved closer every time I took a step back.
“Why will you kill me? What did I do to you? Who are you?” I stammered which made him smirk.
“I never expected that a royal-like you will get scared. I thought you’re brave enough...” he ridiculed.
I constantly gulped and searched for a place where I can run into but I was surrounded by high walls.
“You don’t have to think hard for your escape for I won’t even let you to. Your three guards were already gone. I’ve already swiped away all the worthless beings that can get into my way.”
I stopped from what he had said.
Guards? My guards are the ones who’re searching for me earlier? Why did I not know! A different kind of fear invaded my system even more. Even if I want to stop my hands from trembling on their own, I can’t.
My gaze shifted to the man who’s stepping towards me with his weapon being ready to hit me. I quickly turned my back on him but stopped when he drastically pulled my hair. A shriek with deep pain escaped my lips. My scalp started to feel pain because he gripped my hair.
“Argh! Let go! Let go of me!” I groaned in fear. I held his hand that’s gripping my hair. He lifted me from the ground with just his tight grip on my hair and I felt more excruciating pain.
A hot tear rushed on my face.
“Beg for your life, beg for it!” He laughed as if he’s really out of his mind.
“Let go of me!” I loudly cried out.
“I can’t hear you, do you really wish to disappear? Your wish is my command, my dear princess...” He placed the sharp edge of his axe on my neck.
“You can now pray for your li—“ He cut off his words with his scream as if he was in pain, releasing me from his tight grasp.
“Ahhh! What did you do... ahh!” The pain in his voice was something I can't explain.
“I d-don’t know...” I stuttered. I started to try standing up from falling on the ground. My eyes were filled with fright when I slowly looked at the man. He was three meters away from me.
My eyes widened from what I saw. No! I am not the one who did that! No!
His eyes were drenched in blood. He groped for the weapon that was one step away from him.
“Be ready for what you have done! I’ll make sure to kill you and I will make you suffer from so much pain!” The anger in him started to surge.
“J-just go away!” I stoutly professed.
“What am I, a fool? Just wait for me!” When he sensed his axe with his hand, he quickly ran in my direction.
“Go away!” I cried out in a hoarse voice but he remained deaf.
Before his weapon stabbed in my body, he halted and slowly fell to the ground in front of me.
My right clenched fist was raised mid-air. My eyes were closed for I don’t want to witness what transpired. My shoulders started shaking as my sobbed continue to ruin the silence of the night. His weapon made a noise in the quiet place when it dropped on the floor.
I told him to go! Why didn’t he listen! Why! I cried in my mind.
I just felt weakly crouching on the ground. Now I can feel the coldness around me. The trembling of my hands had disappeared. I was crying because of what I’ve done. Why? That was the question that had been always in my mind.
“Stop, don’t cry.” I lifted my head to look at the woman I didn’t notice was in front of me.
I lost my voice to say anything. The light of the moon blocked her face, why I can’t vividly see her features. Her black hair was undeniably long.
She bent forward to equal our level. I got shocked when my left hand suddenly touched something. My eyes grew wider when she cut my wrist using a small knife she was carrying.
“Why did you do that?” I asked in a low tone. Just like what she did to my wrist and her left wrist, our dark red and black blood dripped and mixed.
“This is the only way I can think of to save you, Two,” she whispered to my ear. Why am I not scared of her? I feel like I know her.
Then knowingly my sight darkened and the last thing I felt was I’m falling.
