Chapter one
CH1
KALE
It was raining. The cold breeze wafted through the car window and saturated the car. It was probably a hundred degrees now but I wasn’t feeling it. I wasn’t feeling anything. I had my scope hung before my eyes, staring at every living, moving creature hanging around that clubhouse; waiting patiently for the door to shut so I could move in.
It was sort of funny, how ridiculous my situation was. I had born a child but I hadn’t seen him since he was snatched from me by my husband. I didn’t even get to touch him.
I took a deep breath but I couldn’t exhale. It had been like this since my boy left me. It's like taking each breathe was equipping my lungs with enough to suffocate me. My lips quivered and I pursed them, trying to stay calm.
Tonight, it would all end tonight. My eyes trailed off from the club house exit to the passenger seat; a finely polished desert explorer was lying on the blue car seat waiting for me to use it. I had a fully loaded magazine and I could only think of one thing; IF THEY GET IN THE WAY OF TAKING TOM, KILL ‘EM.
The loud chatter of a few drinking junkies across the street snagged me away from my murderous premeditation. I flashed one look at them and reverted my gaze back to the club house. Almost immediately, I saw the bouncer pop out from behind the exit door, a short dolly hostess slipping out behind him. She giggled, excited by their mischief. He pinned her against the wall and kissed her neck; his big hands already crawling up her skirt. I looked away, picking up my heat sensor goggles. I peered into the apartments above. Only three energy sources were left inside. A weary v=but victorious smile cracked my lips. It was time to take my boy. I, as silent as the night, climbed out of my car. The gun tucked neatly behind my jacket. I sauntered towards the lovey dovey couple who didn’t even notice me. The bouncer was already pants down and the hostess’ legs were wrapped around his bent region. They were grinding hard and chewing on each other’s lips.
I stopped right behind them and pulled out my gun. I muttered. “I didn’t kill you, your boss did the day he stole my baby from me.”. I pulled the trigger. One shot. It bypassed the bouncer and drove into the hostess. No screams, they didn’t get the chance to do so. I ducked down in the ally beside the club house. A dessert explorer makes a hell a lot of noise. I was counting on that.
I sealed my lips shut, breathing heavily. My heart thumped, banging against my ribs and my hand dripped of sweat. Perspiration covered my forehead and my body trembled. I chanted a mantra in my head, trying to stay calm. I could hear the second bouncer stomping down the stairs. He had a gun the size of a mini canon. Carefulness was of the essence. He crashed into the exit door, throwing it ajar; his grisly breathing breaking into the silence of the night. I slipped out, from the dark and pointed my gun at him.
He spun around immediately. I flinched. Instead of shooting, an i***t like me was startled. He grabbed my arm and flung me. I crashed into the garage bins and sprawled all over the street like the trash. He came on me, I squirmed trying to crawl away. My whole body laced in shock and panicked that I shook like a wet rat. He grabbed my feet and dragged me. I screamed as my face brushed against the rough coal tarred road. He flipped me over, one knee on the ground and is right hand gripping my neck. He squeezed, his muscles bulging. I lost oxygen. The fear send exhilarating tension through my body. I wiggled but I couldn’t break free so I crushed the trigger of the gun fixed tight on my hands. The bullets were everywhere, deafening me and tearing his foot apart. He let go immediately. I scurried to my feet and ran. My legs wobbled, my right was paralyzed so I didn’t limp, I stumbled; crashing into everything as I made my way up to the top room. That disgusting nursing mother who was with my child took one in between the eyes immediately she opened the door. I grabbed my sleeping Tommy swaddled in a blue blanket and painfully carried us both back to my car. The second bouncer was lying in his own blood pool where I left him. His feet and knees shattered.
I placed Tommy gently on the passenger seat and swirled into the freeway. There was no traffic. I didn’t give half an F about the cops. My speed was off all limits, like a mad driver, I cut every turn with a dangerous swerve, making my way to the border. Joana, my husband’s secretary was waiting to help me cross over and finally be free to live with my son.
I found myself smiling, even with my scabbed face and my busted foot. I was seconds away from freedom. Freedom from that nightmare called Marriage. Freedom from all this…
My thoughts jerked off. Blinding white light from god knows where shone right in my eyes. I winced, losing my vision of the road. That’s when I heard it; the mad honk of a truck.
My heart stopped.
I hit the brakes without even thinking, swirling the wheel left and right but even at that, I didn’t get out of the way. The truck rammed my vehicle off the road. In that split second, my body threw itself towards Tommy, covering him before the car began to tumble. Everything else went in flashes of pain and crashes of glass. The seat belt tore apart because of the impact and I was thrown right out the front windshield and against a tree.
I passed out instantly but briefly. Tommy was still in the wrecked car leaking gas. He was going to burn alive. That last realization forced me back to consciousness. I gasped; jolting back to the living. The word was quiet, only this screeching sound was left in the background. The forest was blur and spinning before my eyes. I tried to crawl, to claw, to force my tore body towards the car but I couldn’t. My heart wrenched, my eyes burned and tears soaked my shirt.
‘Tommy.’ I called out in a fading whisper. Something dark covered the car in front of me. It was pointy, like heels. My body shuddered as painfully strained my neck to look up. My gaze fell on a sadistic grin. The face was impossible to not recognize. It was Joana. Gently, she brushed my bloody hair aside and mouthed.
“Goodbye, Bitch.”
She left me. She left Tommy. I tried to breathe, my eyes closing. I tried to fight death, to move to Tommy but it was futile. I turned over painfully and stared at the sky. A last scoff escaped my lips. I teamed up with my enemy, all this while. I confided in her, trusted her and just like my husband, she killed me. Tommy won’t get to live because of all of them.
I drew in a last breath and whimpered. ‘Whether it’s in this life or the next, I will come back. I will make all of you pay.’
