Chapter 1
"I can't believe it's over" I thought to myself. I stood by the gate awaiting the bus impatiently clinging onto my weighty luggage. "What a sigh of relief for me as this was one of those last crazy bus rides with those barbarians" I thought. The last five years were hell and I finally got my ticket out. The elderly watchman standing by the gate looked me up curiously in a manner that displayed keen interest. "What are you blabbering about kid? You are done here though it's more like out of the frying pan and into the fire for you" he retorted. "What do you mean sir?" I courteously intervened. "Experience is the best teacher" he said as he marched back to his station. I looked back at the tall magnificent buildings that aligned themselves in a rectangular quadrangle .The tallest one at the center was the administration block, to its right were the dormitories and finally to the left was the tuition block. Most outsiders looked at the buildings with awe and amazement not knowing the sort of experiences one underwent there. Making matters worse, all communication between them and us was cut off until the end of the semester with an assumption that it was an 'academic barrier' which hindered excellence. This restriction was contrary in relation to other institutions which embraced it as an excellent idea exchange pathway. Unfortunately for us, we had no choice but to embrace it to the latter. For me, the thought of those buildings brought about memories that I wanted erased for they were totally in vain. Since the first day of my admission, I was not only equipped with the quality education offered but also the miserable experiences that were in tandem with it .Upto date, I have never realized the purpose of life; why does it tend to be so mechanical in the sense that a system is set in place to regulate most average people? This makes it awful to the less fortunate as they never get the chance to experience it so as the fortunate who pass through it and end up failing. They are percieved as "misfits" within the society which is wrong by all means. Basically highschool life determines what sort of life lies ahead of you. I was snapped back to reality by a high pitched feminine voice calling out to me which was constantly being diluted by the voices of chanting students. "Vade! Vade!" "Rain? when did u get here?" "Just get in the car before your friends ruin my paint"she said agitatedly. Rain is my best friend who happens to be a celebrity; a successful artist who has attained six golden albums and has hosted numerous shows internationally at the age of twenty one. Her father happens to be an ambitious global multi-billionaire and despite this, Rain independently built her own dynasty through hardwork and resilience with minimal capital from her father. "Any time now Vade" she said with a frown. "Sorry, my bad.." I said while struggling to get past the rowdy students who had completely surrounded her Rolls Royce that was sandwiched by her two other fairly furnished vehicles requesting for her autograph. She had sunglasses on and was urging her fans to create way while her security team tried paving way for me.I managed to survive the crowd and boarded the Rolls-Royce. "I'm so sorry guys, I have to leave now. I love you all, keep on supporting me" "We love you Rain!" shouted one of the girls in the crowd. "Why did he choose that dickhead though?"one guy asked. "Hey! Be nice."Rain intervened. "Can we just go now!" The vehicles sped off immediately and Rain smiled warmly at me.I examined her face. She had long thick naturally curly black hair that extended slightly below her shoulders. Her oval shaped hazel eyes complimented her hair. Her short nose and perfectly shaped mouth completed her look. I failed to understand why someone like her would befriend me. "She's way out of my league."I would think. "Why are you staring at me like that?"she asked with a slight frown. "Nothing just admiring your beauty." "Ouuu so they teach you to flirt with innocent girls these days huh." "Are you really innocent?" "It depends on what you depict 'innocent' to be.I mean I could be bad sometimes,I don't know." She smiled at me and I looked at the window.I was timid and I could say I had bad social skills due to various reasons from my upbringing. It affected me such a way that I failed to maintain eye contact with the person I'm talking to and when they pay too much attention to me,I failed to bring out the words I want and end up embarrassing myself. I was so much lost in my own thoughts that I didn't even realize Rain had changed her outfit. "Vade are you zoning out again?"she asked. "Huh..when did you change?" "About ten minutes ago." "Ooh..You look really nice. What's the Occasion?" "I really think you should see a doctor or something concerning your 'problem" "What problem I am fine.Don't worry about me.She looked at me with unconvinced eyes and rolled them about sarcastically. "Anyway next Wednesday I'm gonna have a concert in Italy and you are coming with me right?" "Do I have to? I'm just done with highschool and I need a break." "Yes you do, you have a whole week before Wednesday and besides it's gonna be my biggest concert of all .You have to be there because it will be also be a special day for us" "What do you mean?"I asked and she pointed towards an alley. She then gripped and held my hands firmly, looked at me in the eyes somehow locking mine towards hers.'Tears welled up her eyes Everytime she wanted to talk about what happened in that alley.A nightclub was in one of the buildings around the alley and it had flickering lights on the sign making it creepier. "Vade I-" "You don't have to say..."She pressed her hand to my mouth not letting me finish my sentence. "You saved my life that day and if you hadn't showed up they...they.." She started crying bitterly having been overtaken by that memory. It was a sad one to be sincere and I could feel her hurting.I told the driver to get us out of there for her sake. Her head rested on my chest as she wept.I could feel my shirt getting damp from her tears. She fell asleep after sometime and only woke up after we had arrived at my place. I alighted with my bags and viewed my surroundings.I missed this place. It was quiet and the only noise came from my neighbor Jake's garage. He is a weapon engineer after having studied and forced to complete his studies after two years of his six academic years. It was not because he was smart but because of his deadly experiments that almost blew up the university. He saw it as a calling to make more deadly weapons. Its only by faith that he didn't blow up the whole neighborhood with his hydrogen experiments. Ashley had just arrived the same time I did but barely noticed me or Rain's machines.Even though we lived as neighbors and went to the same school for the last eighteen years,we barely talked and I knew little about her.She was quite popular at school and was rated the third most beautiful girl in school. She was simple and I was quite amazed by her fashion style. It looked kind of gothic to me but I'm sure most people would have said otherwise. Her blue hair was rumored to be natural but I had my doubts about it. Five women aged about forty to forty five jogged along the sidewalk which was part of their morning exercise. They were all extremely fit for their age.I recognized their leader as Mrs.Freeman who was a yoga teacher and lived in my neighborhood. She had two sons but separated from her by her husband for unknown reasons. Rain alighted after a minute and leaned against her vehicle . While watching me move towards the house.I looked back after taking a few steps and she waved at me "Nice to have you back Vade.I missed you so much.Make sure you text me." "I missed you too and I will."I said while waving back at her.I got to the door and pressed the door bell. "Oh and Vade" "Yes?" "I left a little gift for you in one of your bags.Make sure to wear it for the concert."She winked and smiled at me then drove off. "Classic Rain she hasn't changed a bit since the last time I saw her"I would think. I rang the doorbell again and my mother opened the door almost immediately and she embraced me and squeezed me with a hearty hug upon realizing it's me.I guess she missed me that much.I couldn't blame her because she hasn't seen me for three months. It was only a matter of time till she gets used to me and starts shouting at me again.I thought with a sigh. "You are so thin don't they feed you there?" "I'm not that thin mom.I actually think I've grown fatter since the last time you saw me." "Aw poor you come in! Come in dear!"She said while grabbing my bag to the living room table. "How was school?" "School was fine ... they'll send the examination results in a months time." "Ohh do you want something to eat dear?" "No I just want to lay down for a bit if you don't mind." "Yes yes you need to rest you are definitely exhausted.Poor little thing."She said while kissing my cheek. I then went to my room and unpacked my bags only to find a tuxedo in one of the bags. That was Rain for you.I placed it away, took a shower and changed into my everyday clothes then fell asleep on my bed exhausted from the journey. All I could see were flashbacks of my dark past.Memories I wished to erase clouded my mind and tormenting me in the process . I could see my schoolmates picking on me;discriminating me until I felt hopeless and alone.I could remember the corporal punishment I received in the fourth grade that led me to psychological torture.I felt the whips slicing through my flesh until I was submissive and afraid of giving out my views.I could see myself sitting at the corner of the class with noone realising my presence but despite all this,my brain guided me to the most painful memory of all;Hope. She was my reason to live and die. She made me forget and endure the pain I was passing through and made me smile even when I never wanted to.On the night she left me,I felt hurt, confused, mad;mad at myself for ruining it even though she never gave me the reason why she jilted me and like trash I drifted towards that alley where I met Rain for the first time.It was the same place I got a bullet in my flesh barely aged sixteen. The horrors of it made me scream and wake up breathing heavily and completely drenched in sweat.
