I built the AI at the center of Apex Tech. I was also engaged to its CEO, Julian. For five years, I wrote the core system while he collected the praise. Then he hired Chloe and started clearing my desk for her. Tonight, I slide a core-system revocation agreement into his routine paperwork. Julian signs wherever I point.

Chapter 1 The Resignation You Blindly Signed
"Serena, Julian needs this presentation printed out. Use the premium cardstock from his office." Chloe never looked up. She waved toward the CEO's suite and left the flash drive between us. I took it from her manicured fingers. Before the company-wide meeting, Julian had lost the final investor deck. His coffee was too sweet, and the projector refused to sync with his laptop. A normal morning in his office. "Serena, fix this." He shoved the laptop at me without looking away from his phone. We had done this for five years: I made it work, and he walked onstage. I rerouted the display driver, pulled the correct file from the secure server only I could access, and handed the laptop back. Julian had never asked why the final deck lived behind my credentials. He gave a distracted nod. "And the coffee?" In his kitchenette, I poured out the cafe's sugary mess and made another cup. Black, two ice cubes. The same order I had made every morning for 1,825 days. He took a sip. "Perfect. You're a lifesaver." He only said that behind a closed door. In public, my name rarely reached a slide. Ten minutes later, his thousand-dollar suit was under the stage lights. The room was packed for the future of Apex Tech, built from code that still carried my private comments. He sold innovation with the smile the press loved. "To lead us into this new era, I'm thrilled to announce our new Director of Product for the Genesis Project, Chloe." The applause started late. Chloe stood and beamed. She had been here for three months and still thought a server framework had something to do with picture frames. Julian wasn't finished. "To ensure a smooth transition, Serena will be moving into a senior technical support role. Her deep knowledge of the legacy systems will be invaluable to Chloe's new vision." No one clapped this time. Chief architect to technical support, announced in front of two hundred people. Julian held my gaze. "As my fiancée, I know Serena understands that we must all make sacrifices for the bigger picture. She's a team player." Whispers moved through the rows. By calling me his fiancée, he had made any objection sound disloyal. I folded my hands in my lap and waited for the next slide. The project title still used the name I had given it, though the architect's line had vanished. The plan had been clear for weeks. Hearing it through the auditorium speakers made it final. Around me, former teammates studied their programs rather than look my way. After the meeting, I walked to his office. He was already on the phone, laughing. "Of course, 7 p.m. is perfect. You deserve to celebrate, Chloe." I placed a thick stack of papers on his desk. "The project transfer documents and administrative forms you'll need." Still on the call, he waved me off. "Just leave them. I'll get to them later." "They need signatures by the end of the day. Company policy for a Level-4 project transfer." He sighed. "Fine, fine." After hanging up, he grabbed the pen I had given him when we closed our first funding round. "Just show me where." I turned the pages for him. "Initial the data migration here. Sign the asset transfer here. Last one, the updated vendor compliance form." The last page carried a different title: *Genesis Engine: Private IP & Access Rights Revocation Agreement.* He never read the heading. Chloe's dinner reservation mattered more. He signed at the bottom. *Julian Cromwell.* I lifted the document before the ink had dried. His signature returned every Genesis access right to me. "Is that everything?" He reached for his jacket. "Chloe's waiting." I slid my copy into my portfolio. "Everything is settled." He walked out without looking back. I stayed long enough to watch the ink dry. Then I closed the portfolio over his signature.
