CHAPTER 1 I knew fully well that I was meant to close work early today because today was my boyfriend’s birthday but my boss was not just helping matters. He kept on piling paper works for me to finish before I leave. I bet luck was not on my side. I was fully engrossed in my work that I even lost track of time, glancing up to the clock and I realized that it was already late, looking up only to realize that almost everyone has left the office and it was just me and me alone. I immediately gathered my things to rush out of the building but on getting to the door I realized that the door was locked. ‘Today is just not my day’ I said to myself. Continuously knocking on the damn door but still yet no one answered, my wrist was already hurting me. I bet the security guard must have thought that no one was in the building anymore. I sat down on the floor quietly hoping that one of them will pass by grace. Which I believe was impossible but I still wished. Thirty minutes has gone by but still yet no one came. All hope has been lost for me, I guess I will sleep in the building tonight. I couldn’t even complete one task today. Firstly, I didn’t finish my work and secondly I missed my boyfriend’s birthday party. What will be my excuse, it’s not like I have a very big position in the company I was just a mere assistant to a manager in the company. Curled up on the floor with my head on my lap completely clueless of what to do. I stayed like that for a while until my phone distracted me, someone was calling me. I bet it was Matt that was calling but to my disappointment it was Edna. “Hello” “Girl, where are you I am standing at the front of your door” I had to withdraw the phone from my ear because she was literally shouting into my ears. I was too young for ear problems. ” I am not at home” “Where are you then?” “I am still in the company” “What!!” Why in Christ name is she shouting? “Can you stop shouting into my ear already. They can start bleeding any time soon because of you” “Okay fine. But tell me, what are you still doing at the company?” “Um…I lost track of time and I got locked inside” the frustration took over me and I let the tears roll down freely, I was definitely tired. “I am coming there now. Just wait for me” Edna said reassuringly before she disconnected the call. I just sat there with tears prickling down my face. How stupid can I be to lose track of time on my boyfriend’s birthday. I haven’t even called to tell him that I wouldn’t be able to make it tonight. Ring!! Ring!! Ring!! He picked on the third ring. All I could hear was the music blasting from the other end of the phone. “Hello, baby” the music was loud initially but suddenly reduced, I guess he went to a quieter place. “Matt” I called out to him. “Yes, where are you? I have been waiting for you” ‘And you didn’t bother to call me’ I thought aloud. “I got locked up at the company because I lost track of time” I said with my heart on my hands because I was expecting an outburst from him but all I could get was silence and I didn’t like it. “Hello matt. Are you there?” “Yes, I am. Um….no problem if you can’t make it today, we can still meet up tomorrow” I felt so bad for him, how will I feel if the person that I love does not attend my birthday? “I... I will come today. Edna is coming to pick me up” I don’t know when this words left my mouth but they did and I am grateful. “Okay then, when you arrive let me know” “Okay. Bye” The call disconnected even before I could hear myself. I could only sit and wait until Edna arrives. “Nessa……Nessa…” I heard Edna call out to me. I immediately stood up from the floor waving towards her so that she would be able to see me and she eventually did. She came in with a security guard who opened the door and continuously apologized for having locked me inside. “I am so sorry ma. I had no idea someone was inside” he said as he bowed down showing that he was truly sorry. ” Um….no need to worry about me. It was my fault after all” I said cutting him short before he had the opportunity to apologize again. “We will be on our way now” Edna said grabbing my hands as we made to leave the building. ‘thank you’ I muttered once again to him and left. The breeze hit my skin as I stepped out of the company, it was as if one burden has been lifted off my shoulder. I closed my eyes trying to relish the moment not until I felt a light knock on my head and it could only be one person. “If you are done communing with your ancestors, can we start heading home. Its already late” Edna said as she looked at me with an annoyed look. But I can’t go home. “I am not going home” I said turned to Edna and there she stood looking at me like I have grown two heads all of a sudden. I bet she is surprised. “Today is Matt’s birthday and I have to go to the club. I have already told him that I was coming” “So, you plan on going to the club dressed like this” Edna said looking at my clothes with disgust. “yes, and by the way I don’t see anything wrong with my clothes. Matt has never complained about them so why should I bother” “Oh, please. Leave Matt out of this matter and think of you. You look like a f*****g house wife if you go the club dressed like this” she said eyeing me skeptically from head to toe. “You wouldn’t want to embarrass Matt in front of his fellow employees right?”. I Was beginning to put sense in what she was saying but I don’t have any other clothes that I can change into. All my clothes look the same. “But I don’t have any other…...” “You don’t have to worry about that when you have me” she said cutting me short. “We just have to go to my house and I will get you something else to change into” I muttered a soft okay as I followed her back to her apartment. **** I was getting tired and Edna was not helping matters. All the outfits that I tried out had one problem or the other, either that it is too short or revealing. The ones that I had accepted to wear Edna said that it was too simple and all of it was really getting frustrating. I looked around the room and clothes were littered everywhere. ‘Who is going to clean up this mess?’ it’s definitely not going to be me. “I have found the perfect one” Edna shouted breaking me out of my thoughts. “you don’t need to shout to give a message” I muttered to myself as I looked towards her direction to see the dress. The dress was really captivating, it was not to short or revealing. It was giving the ‘it’ girl vibe; she knew she had this dress then why didn’t she bring it out since. “Sit down, let me help you with your hair and makeup” she said as helped sit on the vanity chair. After she was done, I stared at myself in the mirror and all I could do was admire the person standing right in front of me. She was different from the normal and business looking Vanessa. “Let’s start going already. We are going to be late”. Edna said as she rushed for the door and I trailed behind her. We stood in the club and the noise coming from here was enough to make me deaf. I hated loud places but I had to come here because of my boyfriend. Matt had helped us inside after I called him to inform him of my arrival, he brought us in and left to inform his employees about something, at least that what he told me. “Tonight is going to be fun” Edna jumped up in excitement as she looked around the club. I saw nothing fun here though, just some bunch of horny boys and girls. “Let’s go dance already. I can see a lot of hot men here” Edna said to me. “um…why don’t you go ahead. I will just go sit at the bar till Matt comes back. At least it won’t be hard for him to find me” I said immediately not wanting to dance. I headed towards the bar and I could notice all the stares that I got, it was probably because of the dress that I wore but I couldn’t care less. I ordered for a glass of vodka, which I sipped on why looking around the club for my boyfriend. I suddenly felt goose bumps on my body, having a feeling that someone was watching me, I looked around the club in search of the person who was watching me and there he was.
