Chapter 20 Piper pov I hurried to the mirror as I tried to put my earrings on, careful enough not to let them fall on the floor, before I could grab my purse and head downstairs, I heard a very firm knock from the door, “It’s open!” I yelled from the inside as I hurried into the closet to grab my purse. “Miss Piper,” came the familiar voice of the butler, “Mr Langford is asking for you, he’s waiting in the car.” “I’ll be down there in a second,” I yelled from the inside of the closet. Immediately I heard the door shut, I quickly grabbed my purse and threw a bunch of my clothes that were scattered on the bed into the closet, and hurried downstairs. By the time I got outside, the car was ready to leave with the driver in his seat and Mr. Langford sitting beside him. He got out of the car and got the door for me. Once I got comfortable, Mr Jace’s gaze caught mine from the rear mirror, and immediately I turned away, “Good morning—“ he hummed and stopped immediately. He turned to the driver and tapped his arm gently, and almost immediately, the car came to a halt, and Jace got out of the car. I grew confused, my eyes darting around every corner of the room and wondering what was wrong before the door on the other side of where I was sitting flew open, revealing Jace as he got comfortable in his seat. “You can go now.” He tapped on the driver’s shoulder and the car was set in motion once again. My heart began racing just by the thought of almighty Jace Langford sitting by my side inside his luxurious car. The conversations were so awkward, and I always made sure not to say anything I wasn’t supposed to say, or anything at all that would make him see me as some kind of person, or just maybe differently. “I didn’t get a response from you.” came his baritone. “Huh?” I turned to face him with the side of my eye. “Good morning… I greeted, I wasn’t expecting a response from you, maybe.” “Er … good morning.” I almost stuttered. “How are you?” “I’m well sir,” I responded. “Do you always take that much time to get ready?” Immediately, I felt beads of sweat forming on my forehead and around my neck, “N—not at all, sir.” “You skipped breakfast.” “Sorry sir. I woke up a little bit later after my alarm went off and …” “I’ll send someone to get you something to eat.” “Alright, sir…” I turned to him, but he had his gaze buried on the road like he was the one driving, “My apologies, sir.” I added, with the fear of losing my job. “Apologies?” He turned to me, “Apologies for what exactly?” “Apologies … for making you late.” “That’s alright, it’s my company and I’m the boss, even if I have the most important meeting, I’m still the superior, I can come to the office at whatever time I choose to come.” He said, his aura sophisticated and confident. In no time, we had arrived at the company and we both got out. On our way to our offices, Jace stopped by to accept greetings from some of the employees. A young lady dressed in a neatly ironed white shirt and a deep blue skirt slightly above her knee, walked up to us both, wearing a bright smile on her face against her lipstick-coated lips, “Good morning, sir.” She greeted Jace. “Good morning. Sir,” she said to him, and then turned to me as her eyes ran through me from my head to my toes. It seemed as though she had pulled all my clothes off with just her eyes. “Morning, Ruby, I didn’t expect to see you here today.” “Sir, my bad, I should have kept you updated.” she chuckled really loudly and placed a hand on Jace’s shoulder… in some type of way that definitely isn’t professional. Jace turned to me, “Piper, meet Ruby, she’s our head of staff, Ruby… Piper.” Jace’s gaze fell to me, and a very little smile appeared on his face, “She’s the new designer for the company.” “Mmm, a new designer for the company.” She muttered with her gaze on me. She stretched out my hand, expecting to get a handshake from me, “A newbie huh?” “Newbie?” I curled my brows at her, I honestly didn’t know what she meant by the question she asked. “It seems like you’re new to this… job thing.” Her facial expression morphed into some disgusting look. “I —“ my voice broke as I tried to speak, I wasn’t even sure of what response to give her, “I —“ before any words could escape my throat, Jace interrupted. “She’s not… she’s not new,” he said to Ruby with a straight face. “Oh really?” She widened her eyes at him and then turned to me, “For you to be able to get a position here, it means you must have worked in some renowned companies before now.” I wasn’t even sure what to say in order not to embarrass myself or Jace. Truthfully, this was my first work experience, “I—“ “Rubybyou should get to work instead of standing here and interviewing my new intern.” “I’m aware sir.” She chuckled really uncomfortably. “I’ll see you later at lunch,” Jace whispered to me, leaving me alone with Ruby, who he expected to be heading to her workspace. I was headed towards my office when she grabbed my arm. I turned to her, and I knew exactly what was coming to me, “You know you’re a newbie here. “Honestly, I advise you to know where you stand and don’t even think you’re anything special just because Mr Jace offered you a ride to work. Just in case you’re starting to feel special, it’s more like a normal ritual for him and every new female employee.” She forced a Smile at me before heading towards her office. I just stood there pondering over what she said to me.
