Chapter 19
PIPER’s POV
A moment after I stepped out of the shower, there came a light knock on the door, when I hurried to get it, the person standing behind it got to it before I could and the head of one of the maids appeared by the side of the door, “Miss Piper, it’s time for dinner.” She announced to me.
“Oh,” a wide smile appeared on my face, the sides of my eyes crinkling. I figured Mr. Landon— Jace took things like this very seriously. “I’ll be down in a minute,” I said to her, clutching the towel wrapped around my waist tightly.
As soon as she made her way out, I leaned against the door and exhaled sharply as my eyes travelled around this large bedroom, admiring every single bit of the room and once again, my hands and my eyes fell to my very little baby bump and I rubbed against it before heading to change into something nice for dinner.
By the time I made it down the stairs heading to the dining room, I already spotted Jace seated at the table right in front of a bunch of food that looked really, really good.
“How are you?” He asked as he watched me take a seat.
“I’m alright, er… I don’t know how to …how to thank you enough for letting me stay here.”
“It’s alright, you don’t need to thank me. This place is your place too.” He said very calmly.
“M— my place?”
“Of course.” He grabbed his fork, “We should eat—“
“Right, right.” My eyes fell to all the dishes that were specially arranged on the table, “Is all this for just both of us?”
“Of course, I had the chef make all these, it’s to serve as a welcome gift for you, sorta… There will be more gifts, of course.” Jace stuttered.
While I sat there trying to grasp some pieces of food onto my fork, the only thought that ran through my mind was how welcoming Jace was acting. It was almost like he had been expecting me for the longest time.
“So tell me, about that night…” Jace started, and I almost choked on my food, “He's careful.” He added as he handed a napkin to me.
I stared at him as I wiped across my mouth filled with food, “I didn’t get you”
“About that night… the night we met, what happened to you, you had a lot to drink.”
“And so did you!” I got defensive. I didn’t think to tell him anything about my past so I tried to divert from the topic.
“I didn’t… I mean, I had something to drink, but at least I wasn’t intoxicated.” He responded with a straight face.
“… I just —“
“Felt like sleeping with a random stranger?” He interrupted.
“No… I —“ I was short of words, unsure of what to say or what lies to tell. Jace seemed nice; he seemed like someone I could actually share my past with, but then I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea.
“Piper…” he called out to me, paying undivided attention to me and to my lips making sure he wouldn’t miss not even one word that would slip out. “You know you can trust me, it’s okay if you don’t feel comfortable talking about any of that with me, but then you’re carrying my child, which automatically means your affairs are mine too. How did we get to this point? You’re very talented too, Piper, talk to me.”
I swallowed a large ball of saliva before finally exhaling, “I used to be married.” I sighed once more.
“Married?” He muttered.
“I used to be married to a man who I thought was … anyways things didn’t go as planned so we got a divorce.”
“You must have been really in love with him.”
“… y— yeah,”
“Are you still in love with him? or maybe are you two still in contact?”
“Not at all,” I shook my head in response, “I haven’t heard from him in a very long while, everything that happened between us is much more than just a life lesson.”
Jace stretched his hand closer to mine and grabbed my hands gently, “Well, then that’s perfect…” The corner of his lips lifted to form a smirk. I retracted my hand and immediately cut eye contact with him.
“I-I don’t understand.” I stuttered.
He finally sat up straight and cleared his throat, “We start working together first thing tomorrow morning. I hope you’re already settled in. We have a lot to do tomorrow. First things first, I’ll introduce you to everyone you need to know and everyone else you’ll be working with.”
“Alright, sir.”
“Jace… It’s Jace to you.”
After almost an hour of very awkward dinner time, each of us retired to our bedrooms, and finally, I had seen the time to immerse myself in my blessings. I wasn’t sure what Jace’s intentions for me were, but what I was sure of was that he didn’t have anything bad in mind for me. I grabbed my phone from the ottoman and immediately dialed Anna’s phone number.
“Hello? Anna, it’s me, Piper.” I greeted with a smile on my face. In return, I could hear her smiling from the other side of the phone, “Piper, how are you? How’s that place?”
“It’s perfect, Anna, even more than we imagined it to be.”
“Oh, wow, that is amazing, although were you able to pay for any of the hotels there? I know when you left you didn’t have much in hand.”
“Hotels? Err … no, Mr Langford was nice enough to accommodate me.”
“Jace Langford himself?!” Anna let out a gasp.
“Certainly, although I’m not sure how long I’ll be here for.”
“Oh wow, just be careful okay?”
“I will be, certainly. Thank you so much, Anna, for helping me come this far.”
“That’s alright. It’s my pleasure.”
“I have a big day tomorrow, he plans to introduce me to a couple of his employees whom I’ll be working with so wish me luck tomorrow
“Good luck, Piper, have a great night.”
“Mm…” Immediately, I hung up the phone, and I heard the sound of an unexpected knocking on the door. It was already almost midnight, and I couldn’t wrap my head around why anybody would come to look for me at this time. I got up and headed towards the door when the handle of the door began to bend like whoever standing behind it was trying to unlock it, I began to wonder if I was really safe at all and what if the door wasn’t locked from the inside so I hurried to my bed and quietly tucked myself in, while the knocking continued for a bit.
