RIVER POV
When I come too, my instant reaction is to sniff for Rhylee’s scent, amongst the scents of rogues, Ryder and our driver Dom all others I don’t recognise as familiar there is a distinct scent that makes my hear thump faster, its blood.
Ryder is back in human form but still out cold covered in blood and other body bits. There are limbs of the rogues scattered everywhere, Ryder has a few injuries, but they are healing fast. He sure put up a hell of a fight. I can’t see Rhylee anywhere, so now I get the fun of telling dad and Alpha Brad we have lost Rhy.
Mind-linking dad and alpha, their concern is palpable feeling strong through the link, *What’s happened, River? Is everyone okay?* I know that he and Alpha Brad are going to go nuts, who would do this and on our way to school.
*Dad, we were in an accident Rylee has been taken, Ryder is still out cold along with Dom, dad they tranquillized us and took her* I tell my Alpha and father.
The link cut them on their way to us, I need to try and work out who did this. I move around the car looking, seeing many prints, but in the scramble of prints I see human prints, well almost, perhaps slight distorted with the movements around them, then there is a scent that makes my eyes water, I move closer to the back of the car and find a cloth that has Rylee’s scent but very faint overpowered by chemicals.
Alpha Brad is like an angry bull, heaving breaths, snorting and growling unhuman like, cursing that he will kil every rogue it takes to get her back.
Dad gets Alpha Brad to go to the council with him, the pack guards assisting with clean up. We then returned home, intending to help find our girl.
Ryder and I have grown up with Rhylee, her unsaid protectors, we both hoped Rhylee would be mate to one of us, her sixteenth birthday we all hoped her wolf would finally present, then we will know in the next few weeks at the Full Moon Festival. We feel a sensation when we touch her, but she doesn’t seem to feel it.
This morning when she got angry her eyes sparked, they flickered I know we saw a hint that perhaps her wolf is waking up or something, then her growl at her dad that was net level, I wasn’t sure he wasn’t going to snap at her, but then he broke into a smile. I couldn’t believe that he had acted like it never happened.
Since Rhylee's ’s birth, he has been an excellent father, and he never broke in front of her, especially not on her birthday. Her birthday is happy and sad for all of us but mostly for Alpha Brad, who lost his mate and Rhylee's ’s twin, when rogues attacked the pack, but that was now just more than sixteen years ago.
Rhylee's haunted eyes at times remind me that she does feel the loss of her sibling and mother, more than she likes anyone to know, but we are there with her always, so it is these types of things that we notice.
We all expected Rhylee’s wolf to present when she turned thirteen, her Alpha blood should have been enough to have her wolf come forward naturally, but nope and now at sixteen she finally seems to be close.
“River, Ryder, can you come to the planning room, we need to put together as much information about the attack, the Border Runners haven’t seen anyone, so whoever took Rhylee is still on packlands.” came the call from outside our door.
We had already been going through everything, so we promptly went to assist. Ryder attempted to smile when we walked in, which was followed by a hit when the cut on his lip ripped open again, it’s always the little ones that keep on biting.
Dad and Alpha Brad had been to the council and organised to increase the number of Border Runners and to utilize the council’s warriors to aid in getting Rhylee home safely. They were already running around the territory in their wolf forms.
Alpha Brad has a couple of teams heading to the mountains, where t the rogues once caused him such pain, that leaves us and the Packhouse guards to look at the odd and unusual places; to also reach out to any of our lookouts, someone has to have seen a pack of rogue wolves and at least one human type of being.
Ryder and I being identical twins, having a bond with each other, then another with our family and finally one with the pack, but dad and Alpha have overtime become aware of our own bonded connection, the big difference is we don’t have to ‘zone-out’ when we speak to each other.
All the guards were dismissed from the meeting except tow and the two of us, I expected dad to start the lecture, but he didn’t, Alpha Brad advised to the five of us that any and all rogues we came across were to be interrogated and then killed, not wanting to leave any chance for them to return ever again.
With that we left to look, Ryder's temper has always been much fiercer than mine, not that I can’t be just as savage, but I have levels to my temper, and I usually keep somewhat of a coolish mode but with Rhylee being the one in danger is forcing me to rally struggle to keep in control.
I still couldn’t let go of the prints at the ambush, so many paw prints, but then those odd prints that look mostly human, but then something not quite right. That was what Ryder and I focused on.
All the time we spent in wolf form checking every print we found. It took hours, but we came across a few prints heading into the woods, and we followed them to find a simple group of rogues. They were talking about Alpha Brad and Rhylee.
