“ Yes, the council is made up of different elders from different packs. Although they don't directly control the packs, they make sure that each pack obeys the rules, and one of the rules is to stay away from human matters.” Mason explained. From his description, I could tell that the council was like the government for the humans, making rules which they expect others to follow.
“ What happens if someone goes against the rules?” I asked. I wanted to know about this council thing because I think eventually I might be facing them.
I honestly can't let go of the matter of humans getting slaughtered and relax in my comfort zone.
“ You would rather not get on the council's radar, Melissa, so stop asking. I won't allow you to get yourself into trouble. Just listen to me this once, please.”
Hearing him beg, I decided to drop the topic. I might not push through now, but I know my stubbornness will never let me relax without getting to the bottom of this matter.
The werewolves would rather not interfere with the matters of the humans, yet one of them is killing humans like they are worthless!
If others want to avoid getting involved, I very much want to get involved.
I'll just pretend that I'm over the matter and when Mason trusts me fully to not hover around me all day long, I'll make my move.
Warned or not, I will still poke my nose over the matter and nobody will stop me.
With that resolution in mind, I relaxed in his arms, letting the rhythmic beat of his heart calm my emotions.
I still get goosebumps when I remember how brutally my parents were killed.
If it's not for anything else, at least my parents' death will have to be avenged somehow.
I didn't even get the chance to say goodbye to them and give them a decent burial.
From the moment they dismissed me from work, killing my parents and putting the blame on me, they should have known that they made everything personal.
I will do this for myself and my parents. Growing up, I never let others bully me or take me for a weakling.
It's been weeks and I have been stuck here at the midnight pack.
The people here, or should I say the monsters here, have been very kind to me.
Mason has been busy with pack matters, and I had at some point stopped accompanying him to the office daily. I only go when I'm bored and need his company. He has been treating me nicely and if anything, I have to agree that living here feels heavenly.
The place is quiet, and the woods give me the tranquillity and silence I have always craved for.
The fresh air is nothing compared to the polluted air in New York.
The place doesn't feel crumpled like the city.
Watching the warriors spar has got to be my new-found hobby.
I come to the training grounds daily, either to train or to watch them train.
Today the warriors are not sparing but rather are fighting in their werewolf forms.
“ I think you should also train how to fight in your wolf form.” My good friend over the period I have stayed here commented from the side. Tamia is a sweet and lovely girl. She's petite, but you shouldn't look down on her strength by looking at her frame.
I was the same when I first met her, that's until I saw her tackle two male warriors all by herself.
“ I think I'm good this way, “I replied. I had trained all my life as a human, I was confident in my fighting skills.
“ I know you are. After all I saw how you kicked the ass of that arrogant prick.” She said, and we laughed at that.
I had just arrived and started attending the sparing sections when one of the warriors challenged me.
“ What can a lady who has been staying among humans tell me? I can knock her out with one hand.” He had mocked me, his words Infuriating me to no end.
At the end of the day, I forced him to call me daddy after kicking his ass severely and bruising half of his face.
Since then, the man practically runs away when he sees me.
It wasn't in me to be harsh on others, but if you push your limits with me, I teach you the importance of respecting a woman.
Just because he sees me as a weak human girl did he get the balls to act so arrogant and mighty in front of me. That's how I ended up getting myself a slave in this pack.
I don't like bossing people around or keeping slaves, after all, this is the twenty-first century and slavery existed back in the times before civilization. That was the deal he proposed, if I beat him, he'll call me daddy and work as my slave for a whole year.
Funny, right? but that's how huge his ego was before I smashed it within minutes.
“ It's just that sometimes you are forced to fight in your wolf form. If that happens, you'll be disadvantaged.” Tamia advised, making me turn to look at her.
“ Why would we need to fight? I thought it's peaceful here?” I asked. Ever since I arrived, I haven't heard about any matter that could force us to fight.
“ It is peaceful now, but it's not always like that. We face the danger of attack from rogues.” Tamia answered.
I heard that word from Mason when he referred to his brother as a rogue.
That spiked my curiosity. I have been trying to get Mason to tell me more about his brother, but every time he brushes me off or simply says he doesn't want to talk about it
“ Who are considered rogues?” I asked and Tamia looked away.
“ They are werewolves who chose to stay away from the pack, cutting ties with their packs and choosing to stay hidden. Some are criminals who escape judgement, others are as a result of war, while others choose to be rogues out of their free will.” Tamia explained, making me nod.
“ So why did Mason's twin become a rogue?” I asked, and I saw Tamia's eyes widen before she looked away.
“ That's a forbidden topic in the pack, Lisa, you should refrain from mentioning Alpha Theo's name.” Tamia said. I could feel the fear in her voice, but something else entirely different caught my attention.
“ Theo.” I repeated the name, feeling how softly it rolled off my tongue. The mere sound of the name makes my core pulsate and throb with need.
I had to squeeze my thighs together to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling down there.
“ Theo, what a sweet name.” I murmured, turning to look at Tamia only to have her looking at me with a weird expression on her face.
“ What?” I asked, c*****g my brows at her.
“ You are aroused, Melissa. I can smell your arousal.” She said with a worried expression on her face.
“ We should get out of here, hurry!” She said, and before I could register what was happening, she was already dragging me away from the arena and out of the training ground.
A loud growl reverberated and I turned around to see Mason behind us.
