the Council

Two days passed and although the desire to leave here was lingering, I had come to love Mason's company. We did many things together in those two days. We went running deep into the woods, with me riding his big black Wolf. Ever since the last time I shifted, I had come to abhor the idea of shifting again. The pain was horrible and the sound of snapping bones sounded horrendous to me. He would ask me to accompany him to the office, teaching me about how a pack functions and is run. “ I'm preparing you to take up the position of Luna.” Mason would say, but I didn't put much attention to his words. This was a world different from what I was used to. Besides, I had some matters I needed to settle and for that to happen, I had to go back to my old life. I know Mason will not approve of that, especially with me being the most wanted criminal in the whole of the United States of America. Staying here hidden away from the face of the world, I felt relaxed and happy, but this wasn't something I could enjoy for long. I have been following the news and I have come to learn that the serial killer has been terrorising people even more. The number of murders under my name has increased tremendously. I needed to catch this person killing people in my name and prove to the entire world that I am innocent. For that to happen, I know I have to move away from this place. The last thing I wanted was the government of the United States tracing me all the way here. The existence of werewolves was something not known to the world. Humans still believe that werewolves exist in fantasy stories, and it's nothing close to reality. It was also the same for me a month ago. When I realised that the deaths of the criminals seemed to be caused by an animal, I had come to mock myself for how ridiculous I sounded. With me discovering their existence, I didn't doubt one minute that whoever that serial killer was was a werewolf. What I didn't understand is how he didn't hide his way of killing or even adopt a rather normal way of committing murder. Did he do that to announce to the world the existence of werewolves? But what would he get from making that fact known? Why did he link me with their deaths and most importantly, how did that killer know the exact words I had been compelled to say? I had explained the whole matter to Mason, and he said that only a witch had the capability to compel someone to say something, and that's precisely what happened. Now I was left to wonder who among us in that room was responsible for the start of my doom. There was a witch among us in that room on that fateful day. Unlike werewolves, witches were hard to recognize if mixed with humans. While werewolves have a strong build compared to humans, witches were not. They could pass out as humans if not for their unique scent. What's even worse is that witches can conceal their appearance and scent, making it absolutely hard to identify one. If that's the case, it could only mean that supernaturals are now living among humans and even a part of the government. With them terrorising the people, who knows what will be happening in the near future. If this continued, the United States of America would turn to be insecure for humans to live in. Someone needed to step up and stop them before the situation changed for the worse. Laying on my favourite place, Mason's chest during our afternoon nap, I decided to approach the topic I knew would ruin Mason's good mood for the past days. “ Mason, I need to leave for New York.” I said, and I could feel his breathing pattern change. “ Melissa, we talked about this.” He replied, restraining his voice not to shout at me. “ I know we did, but I need to find out the truth. I can't rest until I know what's happening. I was accused of a crime I didn't do. Not only that, but I have to clear my name. More importantly, I have to stop whoever is killing people aimlessly.” I said, trying to convince him of the need to let me go. “ How are you going to do that, Melissa? The whole of the States is looking for you and your banner is spread all over. You won't even last a day on the streets.” He reminded me and I sighed. “ You think I don't know that? I can't just sit by here as someone continues to do crime and paint my name evil. I have to uncover the mastermind behind that crime.” I pressed on. Likewise, I am a police officer above my New identity as a werewolf, and although I have been branded a killer, I still want to know the truth. “ Do you think it's easy to do that? I really can't watch you walk blindly to your death trap. He killed your parents and framed you, don't you know what that means? That's a warning to make you stay away from his way. If you insist on doing this, I don't mind locking you in here until you get some logic in your head. I have waited for you for so long, I can't afford to lose you.” Mason denied me outrightly. “ What about the innocent lives he has been claiming? Aren't you sympathetic to the people being wronged here?” I asked in disbelief. To him, the safety of others didn't matter, as long as he could be happy. I know it's in human nature to be selfish and go for what is important to them. But I am different, my happiness comes after other people's. Of course, I understood what Mason meant by saying my parent's death served as a warning to me, in other words, I indirectly killed my parents. “ I'm not concerned with others, Melissa. As long as my pack is safe, and my mate is happy, the rest of the world can burn in hell for all I care. I don't understand why you don't seem to get the fact that what happens to humans is none of your business. You don't belong in that world, and the faster you understand that, the better we can move on with our lives.” Mason said, clearly annoyed. His words shocked me. How could he not care about what's happening in the world? They might be safe here in their territory, but who knows when they become the target next? If the killer is a werewolf, doesn't that mean that he knows the existence of their kind? What if he gets tired of killing humans and turns to his kind? Was it going to take the death of one of his kind so that he can react? He was not a human and had zero affection for them, but it is different for me. I have literally spent all my life among them. How could I not care? “ Besides, we are all bound by the council. They will never allow us to get involved in the matters of humans, so forget it.” He added, making me furrow my brows at him. “ The council?” I asked and Mason nodded.
