Damon pondered on what his mother told him, and he just could not believe that he was in love. That is impossible! I don't do love. I don't do cuddling. I don't do flowers and I definitely don't spend the night. Then he thought, I had sent flowers to Christi. I have also cuddled with her on the sofa when we have movie nights. I have also spent the night at her place on many occasions. My behavior towards her has been so terrible lately. How am I ever going to fix this? She probably hates me. She looked at me with disgust in her eyes last night. Christi will never forgive me. I flaunted Francesca in her face and she said nothing. Does she feel anything for me or is this just one-sided? I have to find out.
Damon took a shower, got dressed and headed out to see Christi, when he remembered he took her phone last night, and it was still in his jacket pocket. He removed it and realized that the battery had no power. He sighed, shook his head and left. On the way to Christi's house, he was playing out scenarios in his head about how he would start a conversation, and what he would even say to her. Damon arrived at Christi's place and sat in the car for what felt like hours. He knew she would be home because it was a Saturday, and she likes sleeping late on the weekend, and she would not leave the house without her phone.
Damon took a deep breath, exhaled and opened the door to his car and walked up the path to Christi's house. He slowly raised his hand to knock, then paused. He took another deep breath, let it out, then knocked twice. Damon was so nervous that he felt like his heart was on pins and needles. The anticipation of seeing Christi's face made his heart flutter. His hands began to sweat, he wiped them on his pants and started pacing back and forth. He was facing his car when the door opened, he turned around to see Christi standing at the door with no expression on her face. He looked at her and at that moment his heart skipped a beat and started beating fast.
Christi stepped by a side and allowed him to walk in without uttering a word. He stood nervously in her living room, not knowing what to say or do. Then he remembered he had her cell phone. He thought that would be a good way to break the ice. The tension was so thick in the room you could cut it with a knife. Damon reached in his pocket and pulled out Christi's phone and handed it to her. She took it and looked at it and realized it was drained. He watched her as she left the room to possibly charge her phone. That gave him a moment to think of the perfect opening to start this tough conversation he was about to have with her.
Damon was pacing the room when Christi came back. He finally said we needed to talk. She said there was nothing to talk about. He walked over to her, held her hands and said no, we have a lot to talk about. He led Christi to the sofa and they both sat down. Damon looked at the hand where they were joined together and smiled inwardly. He started. Christi, I am sorry. I am sorry for last night. I am sorry for not checking up on you when you left the restaurant sick. I am sorry for ruining your dinner. And he choked on his words, because the thoughts of Christi and that guy entered his brain. He shook his head and continued. I am sorry for everything. Please forgive me.
Christi looked at Damon and was wondering what came over him. He was acting strange. From the moment she opened the door and let him in, he looked like a lost puppy needing comfort. She decided to go easy on him and let him have his moment. When he started apologizing and asking for forgiveness, she was dumb-struck. Her mouth stayed open and her eyes wide. She did not know what to do. So she just sat there and starred at him. I had butterflies in my stomach, and it was in knots the way he was holding my hand and caressing it with his thumb. That gesture alone had my face getting warm and my heart was palpitating.
Damon continued. I have been acting like a piece of s**t towards you lately and, to be honest, I did not even realize it until someone pointed it out to me. You see after last night, I could not sleep and could not figure out why it bothered me so much seeing you with that guy. Vince also told me you saw me and Francesca at The Galleria last week. He also said he saw you crying. Christi, I enjoy spending time with you, you make me laugh without even trying. I feel so comfortable around you, you make my heart beat faster every time I see you. Seeing you with someone else just made me jealous and angry at the same time. What I am trying to say is that I think I love you. I don't want to be with anyone else but you. Christi, say something, anything.
Christi, was in shock at the revelation of Damon's confession. She opened her mouth to speak but closed it and tried again, but no words came out. Her heart was beating so loud she swore that the neighbors across the street could hear it. Christi swallowed hard due to the huge lump in her throat. She closed her eyes and opened them, then her eyes met with Damon's. She was so filled with emotions that tears began falling from her eyes. Damon reached over and wiped them away with his thumb, then held me in his big, strong arms. I just could not stop the waterworks from stopping. He gently caressed my hair and back to soothe me and I just let his warmth melt away the tension.
I finally managed to compose myself, I said I was fine and took a deep breath. I looked at Damon and said, Is Francesca your girlfriend? I did not know what else to say, because that bothered me so much that he was sharing his bed with her. No she is not. Are you guys sleeping together? He went silent, and put his head down. He could not look at me, nor did he answer. Do you care or love her? I do not, he answered quickly. I Love you, Christi. I told Damon I fell hard for him after our first lunch together. But, you saw me as a friend and nothing more. I decided to be your friend and not make things awkward between us by bringing up feelings to complicate our friendship.
Our eyes met, and I told Damon I love you too. He smiled the biggest smile I have ever seen. Then Damon asked. Who was that guy? I said we usually work together at Lombardi Enterprises. I bumped into him last week, we had coffee, and we exchanged numbers, and then he invited me on a date. Are you sleeping with him? He asked. I told him when you saw us last night that was our first date. Did you make out with him? I smiled and shook my head no. Then he said good. We both laughed. I told Damon what would you tell Francesca? He said. Don't worry about that, I will take care of it today. Damon said one more thing. I looked at him, and he smiled and said. I would like to take you out on an official first date. I could not stop smiling, I was overjoyed. We got up from the sofa, and he said. I will pick you up in an hour, and we will spend the rest of the day together.
