After porpoising most of the day, Pheyus and Shayla stopped for a rest. Their almost continuous echo shocks brought back nothing significant, so for the time being, they felt safe. For Pheyus, even though the waters around them held no predators, the tension was continuing to build. The water was eerie in a way he found hard to fathom. It was so unusual to hear nothing at all off of an echo shock. He never thought he’d miss the constant clatter and intrusions of the company.
Alone with Shayla. Pheyus had dreamed about it for the few days he’d known her before their crazy departure. His dream was now reality, but in a nightmarish setting. He never imagined he could swim only two fins away from her, yet feel so lonely.
“It won’t be long,” said Shayla. “I miss the company, too.”
