Chapter 1
Nora POV 7:00 am and my alarm starts buzzing. I slowly open my eyes and tap on the nightstand a few times before I find the snooze button. A groan escapes my mouth as the throbbing headache starts to kick in. I told myself yesterday afternoon that I shouldn’t accept the invitation from Eliza to come over for a movie night, because we both know how that ends most of the time. From the moment I arrived at her appartement I knew things were going to end bad when I saw the four bottles of wine on her kitchen counter. “Don’t go over to Eliza on a weekday” I tell myself before I get out of bed to go to the kitchen and take some paracetamol. After taking the pill I sit myself on the couch to give the meds a few minutes to start working. I put my elbows on my knees and lay my head in my hands while I think about last night. It was pretty much as usual, us drinking and putting on a movie that we only watch half of the time because we’re chatting about everything. Mostly about how my boss, Jack, always tries to make the women at the office stay late for extra work that needs to be done. And then we end up with Eliza’s new love interest of that week and her picking on me because I’m just not interested in going to the club every weekend and taking a random guy home like she does. She is 25 years old like me and we’re both single. She has a stunning body and long black hair. With her pearly green eyes and plump lips she can get every guy she passes by. Not that I have any reason to be jealous at her, we’re not competing at any point. Especially not for men, we have a different taste and I’m glad for that. And I have a nice body of my own, I am happy with how I look and from the few times that I joined Eliza to the club the men around there made me well aware of it. “Nora, get your ass of the couch and get ready for work” I mutter to myself. I walk through my appartement to the bathroom and put on the shower. While the water is warming up I walk to my closet to pick an outfit for “casual friday” at work. I leave the clothes on the counter and hop in the shower to wash off the regrets from last night. When I’m done I brush my teeth, comb through my chestnut brown hair and put on some bodylotion. Since it’s casual friday I decide to keep my make-up simple and just go with eyeliner, mascara and a colored lipbalm. After that I put on my clothes and start to blowdry my hair before I pull it in a low, messy bun. On friday Eliza and I always meet up for breakfast at the little bakery across the street from our work building, so I don’t worry about my grunting stomach because I will have some bacon and eggs in 10 minutes. Before I leave I check myself in the mirror one last time, looking at the light-colored, high-waisted skinny jeans and white t-shirt with short, flared sleeves that I picked out. I put on my favorite pair of white sneakers and throw on a grey blazer jacket, then I grab my purse and head down to my car. “Ha! The headache wasn’t enough hu?” I laugh sarcastically when my crappy set of wheels won’t start. While I start walking down the street I grab my phone to text Eliza Nora: “Will be a bit later, my car decided to throw a tantrum so I’ll have to walk. See you in 20 minutes xx” Good thing that I can take some shortcuts through the park and it’s not raining. When my phone rings I read the text that she sent back Eliza: “Don’t worry, I overslept so we’ll be there around the same time. Does your head hurt as much as mine? We really shouldn’t drink on weekdays xx” I roll my eyes while smiling and take a turn to walk through the beautiful park.
