THE ROGUE KING

ALTHEA'S POV "Please, wait!" I pleaded as the cuffs clung around one wrist. "There has to be some kind of mistake. I haven't done anything!" The security guard didn't even look at me. "We are here by the order of the High Council. Doctor Althea Dayspire, you are to be taken into custody." "Ask anyone! I practically live in this hospital!" I argued, searching the crowd desperately, hoping to find at least one person willing to speak up. My eyes landed on Lianne who was in the nurses' station. Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something but stopped herself instead. She lowered her gaze, avoiding mine altogether. A few minutes ago, I was just busy treating patients left and right. Now, I was being arrested from appearing in the council's Black List. What crime had I committed? Working too many overtime shifts? Scolding rude patients, or maybe treating rogues? None of those would land me a spot alongside most wanted werewolf criminals in the world. "Please..." I whispered. "There has to be some kind of mistake here." Before he could answer, a deafening explosion rattled the floor. The entire restricted wing shook, the lights flickering with it until the emergency power immediately went through. "What the hell was that?" The walkie-talkie of the man holding me reached in, “We've been breached!” "The Rogue King is attacking the hospital!" Someone yelled from a distance. Panic spread instantly while my mind raced in panic. He's definitely here for me. Why else would the most wanted rogue in the world attack a hospital the same night my name appeared on the Black List? The grip on my arm loosened for a moment and I quickly used it to escape. I twisted my body with every ounce of strength I had and pushed the guard. "I'm sorry!" I yanked my wrist free and ran. "Stop her!" I didn't dare look back, running through the corridors I'd passed a million times by now. I had never run through these hallways in fear before. Usually, I was the one running toward the emergency. The irony isn't funny at all! “Catch the doctor!" Their voices echoed behind me, growing louder with every passing second. Think, Althea. Think! My apartment would be the first place they would check if I somehow made it back there. Every exit was already sealed during the lockdown. Even if I somehow made it upstairs, pack warriors would be waiting for me, too. I needed somewhere to hide for now. My eyes landed on the observation room I just went out of and went straight inside, making sure to lock the door. I leaned against the door, trying to calm my racing heart before I turned back to the rogue I had treated earlier. He was unconscious because of the medicine we had given him. Despite everything happening outside, I found myself checking on him. I checked the dressing over his gunshot wounds and found no fresh bleeding. His vitals are stable too. At least one thing was going right tonight. I let out a shaky breath and slid down the wall beside the bed, burying my face in my hands. "What did I do...?" I whispered to myself. I barely left home unless I was buying groceries. I spent holidays covering other doctors' shifts. My social life consisted of people around reminding me I'm not immortal and I needed to rest. I wasn't some underground criminal. I wasn't even a troublemaker. Why was my name suddenly alongside the four most dangerous werewolves in existence? It simply doesn't make any sense. A loud crash outside made me flinch and the doorknob being busted open made me stood from the floor. The door swung open. A werewolf stepped inside, surprisingly calm unlike everyone else outside. I took a good look at him. Dark tactical clothing, fingerless gloves stained with fresh blood and a gun holstered at his thigh. His eyes swept across the room before landing on me and my mind finally caught up on where I've seen him before. Just earlier, before my face plastered all around the screen, as well as the Black List reports from past years. Zephyr Curran. The Rogue King. Every terrifying story I'd ever heard about him came rushing back at once. I stumbled backward until my legs hit the examination table. "D-Don't kill me!" I blurted out. "Please! I don't know why my name's on that list!" He stared at me for a second before his eyebrow arched. “What list? Who the hell are you?" Before I could answer, he casually pointed past me. "I'm here for that idiot." “What?" He clicked his tongue, "The unconscious one. I'm here to get him.” I slowly turned toward my patient then quickly back at him. “That's my patient." "And I care because?" "You... you can't just take my patient." I don't know where I got the courage to argue with literally the most dangerous alpha alive but he can't just take this man. What would he even do to an injured rogue? He scoffed. "Watch me." Before I could think of another argument, the door flew open again making my shoulders jump in surprise once again. Another werewolf rushed inside. "Boss!" "What?” Zephyr responded, sounding slightly annoyed and didn't even bother looking at the newcomer. "The Council just released the updated Black List and there's another name. She is here.” "She?" He repeated as if that was the most important part of the news. I quickly tried turning away but it was too late. The rogue spotted me and quickly snitched. “That doctor." He pointed at me with wide eyes, “She's the one!” Zephyr slowly turned his head toward me. His gaze swept over my scrubs, my hospital ID, and the handcuffs still hanging from one wrist. "This jumpy doctor?” I quickly raised both of my hands. "I swear to the Goddess I don't know what's going on.” A playful grin spread across Zephyr's face, sending shivers down my spine. "Well, this got interesting.” The amusement in his eyes made me flinch. He walked towards my direction and I expected that this was the end of twenty-eight years of my life. Instead, he passed by me and effortlessly lifted the injured rogue onto his shoulder like he was some sack of potatoes. "Looks like you're coming with me after all." "What?" I stared at him in disbelief. "I am absolutely not coming with you. And put that patient down!” He shrugged, totally unbothered that everyone is losing their minds panicking because of him. “Your call, Doctor.” He adjusted the unconscious rogue on his shoulder. "The Council will be here any minute. I can escape just fine. But you..." His gaze dropped to the handcuff dangling from my wrist and scoffed, "You'll probably earn the record for the fastest capture in Black List history." I swallowed the lump on my throat, hating that he was perfectly right. “F-fine.” Another explosion from outside made me flinch. “Can you stop blowing up things, and put that man down? He's still injured for goodness sake!” Zephyr laughed at my concerns, "You're worried about this guy?" "He's injured and he's still my patient.” I pointed out. "He's one of my people and he survived worst. I assume you already patched him up. He'll live.” I stared at him in slight disbelief. He had attacked a pack hospital... to rescue one subordinate? Zephyr motioned toward the door. Two rogues immediately stepped inside and carefully took the unconscious man from him while Zephyr motioned me to follow him. I hesitated, but knew I'd be dead faster if I don't run now. We got outside, and saw familiar faces ahead. A horrified shout rang out. "Dr. Dayspire is with the Rogue King!" Every head turned to our direction. "No, wait! It's not what it looks like-" Zephyr grabbed my wrist before I could say another word and pulled me into a sprint. "Don't let them escape!" We burst through a damaged emergency exit where several black vans waited with their engines running. As one of the rogues slid open the side door, I couldn't help but glance back at the hospital. My pack, and the only family I've known since I was a child all abandoned me without ever questioning why I landed in that list. They should be the one who knew me more than anyone else and yet... "Don't look so shocked." Zephyr muttered. He climbed into the van before speaking again. "Loyalty is an illusion. The moment people think they'll gain something by betraying you, they wouldn't hesitate in doing so.”
