THE FIFTH VILLAIN
ALTHEA'S POV
"Dr. Dayspire!"
A nurse hurried toward me, nearly colliding with a gurney being wheeled down the hallway if she wasn't fast enough.
I tugged on a fresh pair of gloves as I stepped into the trauma bay. The scent of blood hit my senses, making my wolf stir up a bit.
On the bed lay a young man, no older than sixteen, and was clearly in so much pain. His face was pale due to blood loss and fear.
A slightly older woman stood nearby who I assume was his sister, still in tears.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Randall, he..." She hiccupped between sobs. "He tried to jump over a fence and he landed on...on...”
I glanced at the nurse.
"Metal railing," she supplied. "It pierced his side. The EMS stabilized him on the way here."
I gave a small nod before looking back at the patient.
"Randall, can you hear me?" I asked to assess his consciousness.
He winced. "Yeah."
"Try to stay still and stay with us, okay? You're already in the hospital. You'll be okay.”
I carefully examined the wound while another nurse read off his vitals. Thankfully, the railing had missed his major organs.
"Let's prep him for surgery," I instructed. "Also, cross-match two units of blood."
Another emergency to deal with. This has been my daily life so far.
Two hours later, I finally stepped out of surgery with an aching back and my wolf practically nagging at me.
“Do you even go home at this point?”
I looked up to find Lianne, one of our senior nurses, holding out a paper cup of coffee. She's also one of the werewolves that work in the ER.
“Now that you mentioned it, I kinda miss my bed.” I accepted the coffee, “Thanks, I needed this.”
She laughed at my casual remark. “You've been on duty for eighteen hours already.”
“Wow, thanks for keeping track. I don't even know what day it was today.”
She sighed, “It was supposed to be your day off.”
“Dr. Williams couldn't make it. You know any hospitals are cursed to be understaffed all the time. I don't have much to do anyway.”
I took a sip of the coffee and slightly lifted it, “Thanks for this again.”
"Stop thanking me. Thank Alpha Gareth. He'll fire me if his favorite doctor collapses." She said in a lowered tone for so the other human medical stuff wouldn't hear.
I couldn't help rolling my eyes. The Alpha wasn't particularly fond of me. He simply valued competent doctors and I happened to be one of them in his pack.
Moonbound General Hospital was the largest private hospital in the city, funded entirely by Moonbound Pack. To humans, it looked like any other hospital but our hospital has a restricted wing existed beneath the building, where supernatural patients were treated away from curious eyes.
Most days, I split my time between both worlds. Humans with all sorts of emergencies upstairs, and life threatening werewolf injuries downstairs.
For being an orphan pitied and taken in by my pack alpha, I sure came far. I've worked so hard to be here and I intend to do so until I can.
“Doctor, patient in the restricted wing.” Lianne informed after a few minutes.
I took another sip to finish the coffee and quickly followed.
"So much for my break." I murmured.
I followed her to the staff elevator at the end of the corridor. Unlike the public elevators, this one required a fingerprint scan and a pack-issued identification card before it would move so no humans could accidentally reach the restricted wing.
The elevator descended and we rushed out the moment the elevator doors opened. Contrary to the bustling emergency room upstairs, this floor is hardly filled.
"Who do we have?" I asked.
"Male. Around thirty. A Rogue attacked by hunters.”
I gave a small nod. That explained the nervous looks on the nurses' that met us halfway.
Rogues weren't evil by nature, despite what many packs claimed. We don't usually let rogues in but it's a different story when they are attacked by hunters. Common enemy, I guess.
To me, a patient is a patient.
We all wore a special mask before entering the examination room as any hunter attack likely involved wolfsbane.
I rushed in and saw a werewolf writhing in pain. His shirt is soaked with blood and smoke emitted from the gunshot wounds.
He looked at us with obvious distrust but, couldn't really do anything in his condition.
“Calm down, we're here to help you.” I muttered and calmly approached him.
I carefully cleaned his injury while he gritted his teeth. His body is already trying to push out the bullets but needed further assistance. The wolfsbane infused with the bullets are practically frying him from the inside and needed to be taken out and cleaned as soon as possible.
“Damn it, that f*****g hurts!" He suddenly complained when I pulled a bullet out.
“You'll live." I answered, “Stay still. There's two more.”
He let out another string of curses I ignored till I finished.
"You complained more than majority of my human patients. I know you're upset, but we helped you. A thank you would be nice." I scolded him while the nurses finished on cleaning him up.
One of the nurses cleared her throat, fighting a laugh at how casual I scolded the rogue.
His ears went red and avoided our gaze but no longer complained and we safely dressed up his wounds that would probably heal by itself in less than a day.
"You're an odd pack doctor." He murmured.
I turned back to him and grinned though I was still wearing a mask.
"I've been called worse."
"The High Council is releasing the updated Black List any moment now." Lianne randomly opened after we got out of the room.
I shrugged, “Why bother? It's always been the same four names for like what? Five or six years now? They just change rankings every now and then.”
Before Lianne could respond, two nurses walked past us.
"I heard the Rogue King raided another Council convoy. He is definitely ranked number one again."
"My cousin works for the Council. He said they lost an entire transport team."
"The Blood Alpha again?"
"Who else? I think he'll snag the first position this time...”
Their voices faded as they left.
I shook my head. Why do they talk about those people and the black list like it was some sort of a popularity contest?
Only the deadliest and most dangerous werewolves to exist are included in that list. The people consistently occupying the first four spots are extremely feared but they were also famous for some reason.
Together, they are called The Four Villains.
At least, that's what I heard from other werewolves talking about them.
My train of thoughts were cut when I saw the TV opened up in front of the nurses station of the restricted wing.
Several hospital staff stopped walking and waited as it was surely an announcement of some sort.
HIGH COUNCIL DECREE
The updated Black List.
”It's starting." Someone behind me muttered.
One by one, the names appeared.
Rank One: Zephyr Curran, known as “The Rogue King”
I heard several “I told you so" from the crowd.
The next name appeared.
Rank Two: Cyfrin Amos, known as “The Demon Alpha”
Rank Three: Nox Caraway, known as “The Cursed Lycan”
Rank Four: Rowan Sloane, known as the “The Blood Alpha”
This time, I heard questions as to why the blood alpha is only at rank four.
I moved away from the rest, not really interested and just wanted to go home as I already finished my shift.
But before I could leave completely, I heard the werewolves around me slightly panicking as another name is about to be announced.
I turned back to the screen, also curious at who might it been.
Rank Five: Althea Dayspire of Moonbound Pack.
My eyes widened and started to question my own eyes before a nervous laugh escaped me.
“O-okay, guys. Haha, you wanted me to go home already. I get it already, but that's not a good joke." I said, expecting someone to reveal this was just a weird prank.
Instead, every pair of eyes slowly turned toward me now filled with fear, confusion and even suspicion.
The warmth I'd known among my coworkers only moments ago vanished.
I raised both my hands, “There has to be some sort of mistake. Why would I even-”
I couldn't continue my explanation when an alarm suddenly blared throughout the private wing's intercom.
WARNING. SECURITY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
Massive steel shutters slammed over every entrance and exit, causing people to panic immediately while I still feel lost at what was happening.
The alarms stopped but was replaced by the voice of Alpha Gareth.
"By order of the High Council... I ask Althea Dayspire to surrender peacefully so no one will get hurt.”
My world shattered at the confirmation that this was real. I looked at everyone, trying to find even just one person who will question the absurdity of the sudden arrest. Instead, I saw everyone were already doubtful they've really known me when we were together here at the hospital all freaking time.
Security guards poured into the place, immediately combing the small crowd to reach me.
Before I knew it, someone was already trying to cuff me.
I Instinctively resisted, “Wait. There's got to be mistake. I didn't do anything wrong. Please, let me talk to Alpha Gareth.”
“Stop resisting, doctor. Or we will be forced to use force to contain you.”
I was just about to argue when we heard an explosion from a distance.
My eyes widened. What was that?
“The Rogue King is attacking the hospital!”
