Chapter 1: The Never-Empty Warehouse
The Error Warehouse had no smell. It wasn't damp, cold, or strongly metallic-smelling as one might expect. It only had one feeling: it was perfectly organized. Lam sat in front of the third monitor during his night shift. Three monitors, three layers of data, and a line of text repeated itself throughout his ten years working here: NO EMPTY RECORDS. No blank records. That was the first thing they taught him on his first day of training. Not because the technology didn't allow it. But because, philosophically, a person cannot live without making mistakes. Lam believed that. He believed that if a decision had ever caused harm, it had to be recorded. If a thought had ever deviated from the norm, it had to be marked. Not for punishment—but so the system would know who to avoid next time. The monitor vibrated slightly. A new record was pushed into the inspection queue. Citizen ID: 447-19-8832 Status: Synchronization Complete Lam opened the file. The “Error List” appeared. Empty. He blinked. Refresh. Empty. His heart skipped a beat, not from fear—but because this didn't exist in his professional vocabulary. Lam looked at the right-hand column. No warnings. No red flags. No deletion notes. This file… never had any errors. He reached for the keyboard, then stopped. In ten years as an Archivist, this was the first time Lam had considered a possibility not covered in the procedure: If the system didn't record the error… did the error truly disappear, or was it simply forgotten? In the corner of the screen, the familiar text remained: NO EMPTY RECORDS. For the first time, Lam wasn't sure it was true.
