Toxic relationships, abuse, and violence. - Jane Whispers The house was still, and no one was around, and they had gone for the weekend. Just fourteen years old and abandoned to care for myself. This wasn’t the first time this had happened. Nearly every weekend, they do this. So I knew they would be back by late Sunday night. It was Friday night, and I had plenty of time. They won’t know I have left until at least two states are over. Knowing that I needed to get as far away as possible. To make sure they would never discover me. Assembling everything I could without creating suspicion. I wore a warm black hoodie, black jeans, and black boots. It was almost midnight, and I peered out the window. The streets were empty. Gathering my bag and heading for the backdoor, I looked around the house. It had never been my home, not really. It took time to save some money. I would need money for the bus. I knew I had very little and would have to find more somehow. Stopping cleaning the handle. I knew they would dust for prints. I wanted them to think someone had taken me. That way, they would look for a kidnapper and not a runaway. Thinking ahead, I had left a ransom note by the front door. I unlocked the door and glanced back. A peaceful feeling rushed into my heart. A deep sigh escaped my lips. This was the last time I would ever see this place, and I couldn’t have been happier. I hate this place with every fiber of my being. They adopted me. It was an average family; a mother, father, and siblings. It was an unhappy life. My family had money, but I was just a status symbol for them. They were so loving in public, but had no regard for me otherwise. It didn’t help that I couldn’t speak. Being born a mute, much to my family’s annoyance. My siblings had no love for me, either. Now I don’t even remember their names. My siblings were always jealous of me. They smashed my toys when I was young. I remember the time they held my hand in the doorjamb and slammed it over and over till they broke my hand in three places. I remember them pushing me down the stairs, breaking my leg: so many broken bones and bruises. My mother never seemed to care as long as they never damaged my pretty little face. I was a clumsy, mute, adopted child with a pleasant look. On my 12th birthday, my family went to Disneyland without me because I got a B on a math test. When I was fourteen years old, I knew I had to run away from home. They had come into my room in the middle of the night and brought me the most shameful kind of pain. I made my decision when we had a speaker in class; and realized what was happening and decided I would not be a victim anymore. The first few weeks were the roughest, but I learned rapidly what it was like to live on the streets. Some other children would help me find my way, but they are long gone by now. I spent a year traveling the bus routes and soon found myself in a small bus depot somewhere in the Midwest. I never paid attention to where I was because it didn’t matter. This time, I had just got enough money to pick another random location somewhere on the east coast. I thought it would be nice to visit the ocean. I had only seen the ocean in pictures. It was so cold where I lived, even though I didn’t remember where it was anymore. The bus was departing. That’s when I saw Henry and Ashely for the first time. Ashley was a tiny woman with a slim figure. Her loose hair was long and blonde, and she was wearing a pink sundress. Her skin was tan, and she looked like she had enjoyed the sun. Henry was wearing a white hemp shirt and light brown cargo shorts. Henry’s long brown hair was in a ponytail. His face was smooth, with only a little facial hair. Henry seemed strong, and it was hard not to notice his muscular frame. I thought they must have been no older than twenty. I noted his tan skin, which made me think he was from somewhere sunny. They could be from the coast. “Hi, are you here all alone, pup?” asked Ashley, leading down in front of me. I stared into her blue eyes, taken aback, and adults seldom showed interest in the homeless-looking teenager at the bus stop. Why the hell did she call me a pup? I didn’t respond, and I couldn’t even if I wanted to. I just glanced away, waiting for her to leave, but she embraced me instead, tightly hugging me to her. Forcing myself to pull away, I could see the sympathy in my eyes. Someone had never hugged me before, and this woman was strange. I knew enough not to trust anyone. She held me tighter. She felt so warm, and I knew I shouldn’t but, I couldn’t help myself. Something felt different. I didn’t want to pull away. “You don’t have to explain, little pup. Would you like to come with us? We will keep you safe.” said Ashley in the most caring tone. I could help but cry, and no one has ever spoken to me like that. Her voice was calming, sweet. “Henry, come here,” Ashley called; the tall, muscular man came over. He had a smile on his face. I would be dishonest if I said I didn’t find that smile handsome. He was good-looking for an adult. “She is all alone, Henry. A lost pup. We can’t leave her here.” Ashley stated, pulling Henry down to sit in front of me. I looked into Henry’s brown eyes, and something seemed different about him. He wasn’t like other men, and I could feel he didn’t want to hurt me. “Are you alone?” Henry also asked in a very caring tone. I responded by signing that I couldn’t speak, hoping they would understand what I was trying to say. Most people knew what I meant when I signed like that. Somewhere still clueless. They paused and looked at each other. I sighed again, hoping they would understand. “You can’t speak?” Henry asked, seeming to comprehend. “Yes.” I signed, glad that he could understand. “Okay, little pup, would you like to come with us? I don’t think Ashley is going to take no for an answer. We will protect you. There’s a lot of danger for people like us.” Henry stated, but I wasn’t sure what he meant. There were dangers as a runaway, but these two didn’t seem harmful. They oddly made me feel safe. They seemed like they wouldn't hurt me. I felt like it would probably be safe, at least for a while. I could always run away if things got dangerous. It’s not like I had my innocence to protect. My brothers stole them a long time ago. “Yes.” I signed. Later that night: We were sitting around the campfire outside of the town. Henry hunted our dinner and telling me next time he would show me how. They seemed really sweet, and they were laughing, telling about the hippie cult they were from. Apparently, they didn’t have enough freedom. “Why do you keep calling me a pup?” I signed up at Henry while looking towards him. He stopped eating his piece of rabbit and turned to me. “Because you’re a pup,” Henry replied, and I rolled my eyes. I wasn’t a pup, and I was a human child. It’s weird for him to call me something I’m not. “Wait, you know what we are, right?” Ashley asked, seeming to think I was missing something. I shook my head no. I didn’t understand what they were getting at. Henry and Ashley shared a look and whispered to each other before removing their clothes. I glanced away. I looked for an exit. This was getting weird, and it was probably best to leave. Looking away from them, I heard bones snap and crackle. I looked back to see the massive wolves standing where Ashley and Henry were. I was frozen in place and watched as the wolves shifted back into humans. Fear rushed over my body, and I could not move. Henry and Ashley threw their clothes back on and sat back down. I closed my eyes again and tried to wrap my head around what the f**k was happening. That night we learned we were creatures of the moon, children of the goddess of the moon, werewolves. They said they were werewolves, and they could sense one of their kind. I wouldn’t believe them if I hadn’t seen Henry and Ashley shift. They said I would shift when I came of age and protect myself until then. They explained the entire history of werewolves. According to Henry, two lovers from opposing families wanted to be together and ran away. However, they were captured, and the lovers were near death. The women prayed to the goddess of the moon to save her dying lover, and the moon goddess granted them the powers of a wolf. They became the first werewolves and the first mates. Every living werewolf was a child of the couple and a child of the moon goddess. Every wolf gets a mate. Ashley and Henry were mates. One day I would find my mate and would have our own pups. Henry and Ashley were wandering rogues, meaning that they did not have a pack. Apparently, most werewolves live in packs, each with their own views. Henry and Ashley came from a hippie pack in California, but being a free-loving pack wasn’t enough for them. They wanted the authentic freedom of being rogues, like the goddess wished to. I stayed with Henry and Ashley, and we traveled for many months, finding other rogues along the way. We were nomads, spanning the whole US, living off the land, and enjoying the freedom that the moon goddess wanted for us. When I turned 15, I shifted into my wolf for the first time. She was beautiful, a purple wolf with white paws and a white streak on her chest. I remember Henry saw my wolf the first time he freaked out. Apparently, purple wolves are unheard of, and shifting at 15 is unheard of. My size wolf was too large as well; according to Henry, I was a she-alpha. After that day, Henry and Ashley settled near one of the great lakes. It has grown to over a hundred wolves, some with small families. It had been almost two years since I met Henry and Ashley. Or was it longer? Or was it less? It was a struggle to keep track of the days when we were so free to do anything we wished. I was seventeen years old, and we were living in an encampment near a great lake. I don’t know how we found ourselves here, but we did, and it was our home. I was chilling in my tent, reading some comic books, when the most fantastic scent invaded my nostrils. My wolf purred. “Our mates are here.” She said, pushing to come forth. I knew what that meant, and we were under siege. Running into Henry and Ashley’s tent, where they lay sleeping. I called my wolf forward, just enough to speak. “We are about to get attacked; get up right now,” I said, shaking Henry awake. “Calm down, princess,” Henry said, drawing me under the blanket and kissing me. My wolf growled, pulling away, slapping Henry across the chest. It wasn’t time for that s**t, and we were in danger. “You don’t understand, you i***t; I can smell them,” I yelled, slapping his chest again and pulling away. He remained unmoving, exhausted from daily events. “Your mates are here,” Ashley said, jolting awake. I nodded. Screams filled the night air, and they ran out of the tent to find the fight had just begun. They outnumbered us. Wolves shifted and unshifted, pouring into our encampment from all sides. Screaming erupted as someone struck the warning bell. A little too late, I thought. Men ran from their tents, shifting as they dashed into battle, their clothing shredding and falling to the ground. We watched as three of our members got their throats torn out and fell to the ground, shifting into human form. “Don’t shift either of you,” he said before shifting and running in battle. Ashley and I stayed together, gathering the children and other women and helping them into the treehouse at the camp center as other wolves kept the attackers at bay. War parties rarely attack women and children, but use them to control us. Everyone in the pack wants to protect the pups. It wasn’t hard for most wolves to have children; however, the world was dangerous, and male rogue wolves often died in battle before having more than a few pups. I saw Henry making his way to the giant wolves surrounded by three unshifted males holding crossbows. I knew they were my mates. They must not have shifted yet because they would definitely smell me. They wouldn’t be protecting their Alpha, but their wolves would be after me. Henry would surrender, and I watched as he bore his neck into submission. And the Alpha accepted, howling to call off the attack. That night, they took us before the whole pack. They rounded together between us and marched to the packhouse. People carried with them what they could quickly grab. I was always ready to go at a moment’s notice. All my belongings in single a duffel bag, as did Henry and Ashley. It always meant for the group to be ready to move at a moment’s notice, but some thought we were safe and unprepared for such a situation. “We found these rogues living just outside our lands, and they surrendered; now they are members of the White Moon Pack. As pack members, you will serve in our ranks and live by pack laws.” Explained the Alpha to the pack members. They forced Henry and Ashley away from the group. They are dragged away by two warriors from the pack before kneeling before the Alpha and his family. Looking towards them, the wolf howled. Her only family was in danger. Henry and Ashley were the closest thing I had to loving family. We couldn’t help but let the fear sink. They could die here and now, and it would be justified. They were clearly the leaders of our pack of rouges, and the Alpha could quickly kill them. Many view rouges as pests and the laws are clear, they can kill rouges on sight without being seen as a crime. I couldn’t protect them, and I couldn’t stop this even if I wanted to. They could kill me too, without a second thought. I can’t die here. I had only just found my mates. My life hasn’t really started yet.. not really. I looked towards the Alpha and his family. And felt the mate bond pulling towards them. My wolf was crying for her mates. She wanted to claim them; she wanted them to claim her. But now was not the time… our family was still in danger. Henry’s scent is still on my skin. They will kill him if they smell him on us. As I thought, my mates were his sons. I couldn’t help but stare at them. They were all so handsome. I couldn’t believe she gave me three mates. What was the Moon Goddess thinking? How the hell am I going to have three mates? Alphas were so jealous, and they had to share one mate. This can’t end well. “Go to them.” my wolf howled. “No, they aren’t shifted. They will reject us.” “No, they will f**k us.” she purred. “After the shift, they will find us,” I said. I wanted to reach for Henry’s arm to soothe her. She growled. She didn’t want me touching him anymore. I would have to agree, and I wasn’t his anymore. “You have surrendered your members to us, and because of that, we will spare you death. But must, along with your members, swear an oath of allegiance,” said the Alpha. I breathed a sigh of relief. Henry and Ashley will live for the time being. “Repeat after me. I swear to protect the White Moon Pack from all danger. To abide by the laws our Alpha has set forth and to never harm a member of the White Moon Pack, or I will die a thousand deaths.” The Alpha commanded in his alpha voice, forcing everyone but me to repeat his exact words. This didn’t go unnoticed, and a warrior pulled me from the group, throwing me to the ground. I screamed, hitting the ground. My body slipped in the dirt. My wolf jumped forward, but I held her back. I can’t shift here. I looked around, seeing the crowd staring in my direction. Everyone’s eyes were watching me. I felt someone grab hold of my arms. The warriors forced me to my knees and made me stare at their Alpha. I could see my mate staring blankly in my direction. If they only knew, then I wouldn’t be treated this way. Probably being forcibly marked. “This rogue didn’t speak the oath.” The warrior said, hitting me in the back of the head, making me fall into the dirt again. I quickly recovered and looked up at the Alpha in defiance. My eyes wandered to my mates. So handsome, I thought. They looked surprised, maybe because I defined the alpha voice. “Speak the words, rogue.” The Alpha ordered. “She can’t speak. She is a mute,” Henry quickly answered. I am closer to him now. But, I knew how to keep my hands to myself. I wanted to reach for him like before. My wolf wouldn’t let me. “Then she will be banished.” the Alpha stated, nodding at his nearby warriors who forced me to my feet. My wolf howled, our hearts raced. She fought to speak, but I held her back. This wasn’t the time. “Wait,” Ashley said, rushing to my side, embracing me. “You can’t banish her. Her mate was there, and she caught his scent. That’s why we surrender. You wouldn’t have gotten so many wolves if it wasn’t for her.” My heart dropped. I wasn’t ready to face my mates. I couldn’t meet them like this, and I still had Henry’s scent all over me. “Is this true?” The Alpha asked with a shocked expression. No, Alpha would be happy to have a rogue mated to one of his warriors. I can’t think about his reaction if he knew I would be his sons. “Yes, but she won’t tell you who her mate is, and neither will we,” Henry replied, looking toward us, shaking his head. He knew I wasn’t ready, unlike Ashley, who was prepared to hand me over to them. She was naïve like that. Ashley thought that a mate would never harm another. She is wrong. I have seen it. Mates beat, raped, and even killing each other. “I take it your mate is underage, and you shifted early. Fine, then.” The Alpha said smiling, “She can stay, but when her mate finds her, they will mark her that day, and she will swear the oath over the mind link until then. Until then, her mistakes are your mistakes.” “Yes, Alpha.” Said Henry and Ashley in unison. I would not let that happen. I would get out of this land long before that would ever happen. We don’t need a mate, let alone three alphas. They would have complete control of me as a breeding cow. **** They spent the first few days documenting all of us. Ashley was with me, standing by my side, helping me answer questions. My turn came. We didn’t have any other choice but to tell the truth. They knew I was the future mate to someone in the pack. The Alpha would research my background. They would find the truth, and Ashley and Henry would be the ones to be punished. “Name and age.” the woman said, sitting at the desk in the packhouse’s office. She was older, a mated she-wolf. She was gorgeous. “Her name is Danica Springs, and she is seventeen years old,” Ashley answered, her voice unsure. I was as well. We hadn’t kept track of my age over the years. I had to be around seventeen now. “Age at first shift, and color of her wolf.” The woman asked while writing on the forum. “She was 14 or 15, and we aren’t sure of her birthday. As for her wolf, she is different.” Ashley said, causing me to grip her hand and shake my head no. We didn’t know what my wolf’s color meant. I could see it as a curse, or worse. “Different how?” the women asked, putting down the forum and looking at us. Her eyes locked onto mine, staring into my soul. I knew we couldn’t lie. The pack will see my wolf, eventually. I was the future Luna, and they would expect me to shift and run with the pack. Everyone would know. It was just a matter of time. “She is a she-alpha, and her wolf’s color is purple,” Ashley said, causing the women's appearance to change to something different. The woman even shifted in her seat; she was uncomfortable. “That means someone abused as a child.” Inquired the woman in a shaky voice, with a tear rushing down her cheek. I didn’t understand why she was crying so openly. It was common for rouges females to be abused. I didn’t understand how that could affect the color of my wolf. Unless it was different because my family abused me. “She was. A long time ago, we found her at a bus stop. She ran away from that,” Ashley said, pulling me close and kissing my forehead. So that was why my wolf was so different, because my adopted family abused me. Did it really have such an effect on my wolf? “We will keep this between the Alpha and us, but people will find out. Let you do that in your own time.” the women said, standing and embracing Ashley and me. She cried. We cried. I found out later that the woman was the Luna of the White Moon Pack. My future mother-in-law. I’m Danica Spring, a she-wolf born during a lunar eclipse in the middle of Spring to a mother who didn’t want me. They delivered me in the back of a taxi on the way to the hospital. As soon as the driver cut my umbilical cord, my mother ran into traffic, never to be seen again. The taxi driver felt pity for me and gave me a name before leaving me at the hospital. I guess he didn’t want me either. At least he was kind enough to provide me with a good name: Danica Spring. Danica, a name of Slavic and Latin origin meaning “morning star” and Spring meaning “originate or arise from.” A rising morning star, how sweet.
