Chapter 1
Amelia ❣️
Warmth engulfed me the moment I stepped inside the café. It was a small café with a cozy feel to it. I can see families and couples at tables enjoying their time. A huge glass window was present near the door which gave a splendid view of the city. I went to one of the tables next to the window and sat down, too tempted to look outside the window and enjoy the view.
A lady approached me and stood near my table with one of the most kindest smile. By the looks of her uniform she must be here to take my order. “What can I get you dear?” She asked. I couldn’t resist. I smiled back.
“Can I please have a cappuccino with a slice of chocolate cake?” I replied. Thinking how nicely the hot beverage will blend perfectly with the snow outside. “Sure beautiful. I will be right back with your order.” She smiled and left. Leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I looked back at the city. Admiring the snow covered streets of New York. I was new here. Rented an apartment nearby. My old city had too many memories for me to move on. There are so many days I want to erase from my life. Like they never happened. But you can’t win against the past. I looked around and saw people smiling. Laughing with their loved ones. A tear threatened to escape my eyes as I remember that I can never have a normal life. Never had.
When I saw the lady from before approaching with my order, I sobered up. Instantly putting a smile on my face. “ Thank You” I said to the lady.
She smiled warmly at me and left while I was busy eyeing my chocolate cake with a hungry gaze. The chocolaty heaven looked too delicious to look away. I immediately took the fork, took a little piece and shove it in my mouth. I almost moaned at the blissful thing that instantly blew my taste buds.
“Are princesses real?”
While I was too busy having my chocolate cake, I noticed a little girl looking at me with her big green eyes. She was so beautiful and pure as she was cutely clenching her small teddy bear. Thinking I might like some company from this cute girl, I said, “ yes. And I’m looking at one right now.” I winked.
She giggled at me statement and climbed onto my lap making herself comfortable.
“But Benny said that they aren’t real. They are just fictional.” She frowned as she took the fork from my hand, cut a small piece from the cake and instead of eating it she brought the fork to my lips. Can this girl be any more adorable!?
“Don’t listen to her then. If you want to be a princess, then you are one.” I added before taking the bite in my mouth. “ Who’s Benny by the way?” I asked with a chuckle. “Oh I’m so sorry! I am Emily and Benny is my best friend.” She said with a light blush. “ Hey Emily I’m Amelia. It’s really nice to meet you.” I replied pinching her cheeks in the process. She tried to glare at me but didn’t attempt to move it away. She looked like an adorable kitten!
“So? Why were you looking like you were about to cry before I came here?” She asked. I was beyond shocked but I didn’t show it. My face grew emotionless. I just stared at her eating the cake and didn’t reply. On seeing me silent she turned towards me and was about to ask probably more questions when the lady who took my order came running towards me.
“Ma'am I’m so so sorry. She is my daughter. I was preparing an order and she just snuck out.” She said with apologetic eyes.
She turned to her daughter and started scolding her on how she should not go around talking to strangers and how worried she was when she couldn’t find her. “ It’s okay ma'am. Your daughter is quite a fun company.” I added with a smile. She relaxed a bit on hearing this.
“ Now c’mon Emily. Go inside again and finish your homework otherwise no donuts for bonus this time.” On the threat of donuts she quickly got off my lap and sprinted towards the kitchen without any second glance but not before placing a small kiss on my cheek. We both laughed at her cute behavior and the lady soon went back to the kitchen.
As I was sipping on my coffee I wandered off to why I needed a break like this. I’m 23. I’m jobless with little to no work experience. My rented apartment near the café is the only thing I have left. I need a job soon. The owner already warned me to throw me out if I didn’t pay the rent soon. I sighed. Too tired of thinking an escape out.
When I was done with my coffee I paid the bill and got up. I really wanted to tip the lady. She was so nice. But I really didn’t had a lot of money. Maybe coming here was a mistake. I thought as I opened the door of the cafeteria. Just when I was about to step out, the lady from before came to me probably for not giving her a tip. God! I suck! She stopped in front of me.
“ Ma'am our boss is asking for new members to work here as the place is starting to get more popular. She told me to ask the costumers in case anyone is interested.” She informed.
“Can I apply for a job here?” I asked without even thinking it out.
Her eyes shone with brightness on hearing this. “ Of course! I’ll let her know and you can come meet her tomorrow!” She said smiling.
“Thank You!” I said. “Thank you so much!” I was on the verge of tears again. I stepped out of the café with a small smile on my face. A real one in a long time.
Maybe I can finally have a happy life. Maybe everything will get better. Maybe living a normal life will not be a dream anymore.
And Maybe, coming here today was not a mistake.
