I trudged through the blanket of snow atop the road as I made my way to the hospital. It had been a week, and my father still hadn't returned home. My mother claims that the doctor is monitoring his health and that, while he is conscious presently, he needs rest. I'm hoping that in two weeks, he'll be back to his old self, powerful and fierce. Although I gradually accepted his position, I have no desire to follow in his footsteps.
"Oh, Solene. Is the training done?" my mother asked as I entered my father's hospital room. As the pack's beta, he is assigned to a VIP room. Every official gets access to free or expedited services within the pack. Perks of being born to a privileged lineage.
"Yeah, just ended, and I went straight here," I said as I walked next to my sleeping father. His previously bulky and muscular body had shrunk slightly. It appears that his stay in the hospital did not do him good, aside from monitoring his health.
"How's he doing, mother?"
"He's getting better now. Maybe two days from now we will be back home," she replied while peeling some apples on the fruit tray.
I plastered a smile, hearing the good news. I couldn't wait any longer for my father's return. Once he is back, I will have my freedom again.
"I know you're so eager to have your father back. Pray for his fast recovery and endure the remaining days," my mother said while she handed me a slice of apple.
There's no denial of her words, as everything she pinpoints is true. I am really eager to have dad back. If not for the female warriors I somehow got close with, I would probably have rebelled despite wanting to be responsible. Atticus never gives me a day off without his malodorous mouth and annoying phrases. He is like a pest I couldn't get rid of no matter how much detergent I used. He is so like Jace but a lot more worst.
Speaking of that man, it's been 4 days since I last saw him. Since that incident, he has never shown his face again to me.
"Btw, it's almost one. The Alpha might need you now," she added, which makes me confused.
"Why?" I asked innocently, not knowing what she meant. I've been working for the past seven days, but I never went to the Alpha's den every after training.
"Didn't you read the handbook and your responsibility aside from supervising the female warriors' training?"
Ops, about that, I have not had the chance to take a look at what's inside the book. I forgot what Anita had told me before. Could that be the reason why Jace follows me to the Kumuri Falls because I have some responsibility to do? But isn't it Aika's job to assist her husband? After all, she's the Luna.
"Uh, no?"
"Oh my gosh, Solene, so you never worked with the Alpha in the past few days?" mum said, concerned.
"Yes?" I asked skeptically.
"I gave you the manual to read; you should have read it, Solene; you're such a pain in the ass. Did the Alpha look for you?"
I raised my brows as Jace did not look out for me, so I shook my head in response. Well...he did once, but he didn't tell me it was because of work or was I too dumb not to understand his purpose.
"Come on, go now and apologize. Don't forget to read the handbook, you lazy lady."
I grunted in frustration when my mother tried to shove me away. She actually pushed me out of the room, something she had never done before. Will I be punished now because I didn't do the work effectively? Should I really apologize? Is that necessary? I messed my hair as I started to stride towards the hospital exit.
I am contemplating whether or not to go where Jace's office is when my stomach grumbles. I forgot I hadn't eaten my lunch. Now, I can't just go there with an empty stomach in case I get into a trivial fight; at least I have some bullets with me.
So, instead of going straight to Jace's place, I went straight to my house.
"Anita, I'm home," I shouted upon entering the door. It's kinda weird when I didn't hear her response. Oftentimes, she would be the first one to greet me whenever I came home. Yet, today the whole house is quiet as a church mouse.
Despite feeling strange, I went straight to my room and had my clothes changed into more comfortable ones. I wore a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt to match the season. I then descended back and headed towards the kitchen. I'm wondering where Anita could be at this moment, knowing that she is not an outdoor kind of person.
My eyes widened upon seeing the kitchen. The scene surprised me in that it made me stunned for a moment. There, in the counterpart of our dining area, is a man eating his spaghetti while Anita is writing something. What the fudge is going on? Why is Jace in the house?
"Anita? What is he doing here?"
"Oh, Solene, you're finally here," she muttered after noticing my presence. She immediately went beside me and whispered something, "where have you been, dear? the Alpha has been waiting for you for hours already."
"I went to visit dad. You should have let him go home. Why is he eating here? Doesn't he have a house?" I mumbled back.
I looked back at the chilled man and noticed him looking at me. I lifted my brows and stared at him with the same intensity. He didn't show up for days, and now he's behaving as if everything is fine, the chutzpah of this man.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, breaking the silence that started to illuminate the whole place. While Anita gets back to her work.
"I just want to see if you're fine now. It seems like you have forgotten that, aside from training the female warrior, you need to work for me too. You have pending jobs that need to be done," he replied while wiping his mouth with a table napkin.
"Isn't that Aika's job? She's the Luna; should she not be your assistance?"
"She has other work to do. Do what is told and be responsible. You're not getting any younger, at least work for the pack instead of wasting your life on things that are no good for you," he added; words went straight to my skull.
"I told you, I would live the life I wanted, and you had no say to that."
"You are just an Alpha, do not cross the line. My personal life is none of your concern. I'll finish those pending works tomorrow. I am not in the mood to have it done today. Now, get out, " I uttered coldly. I saw a flash of anger in his eyes, but that wouldn't make me tremble on my knees. Some regard Jace as harsh and domineering, but he is nothing more than a piece of s**t to me. No one in this pack can let me submit to the Alpha. I am not an obedient follower like my father, and Jace should know that. The more they restrict me, the more I get challenged to do the opposite.
"I guess picking Aika as my Luna was the finest decision I ever made; you are nothing but trouble, a self-centered woman who constantly thinks about herself. Now, I don't have reasons to show you kindness," he muttered before going out.
Unconsciously, a tear slipped from my eyes, which I brushed away as I chuckled at the sharpness of his remarks, which stabbed through my head and heart. He has a valid point; I am self-centered. I guess making myself happy is a means of being selfish now. If that's the case, so be it. The people who truly love me will accept me no matter how bad of a person I become.
It is better this way, so my wolf would not hope for a miracle. I finally accepted the fact that Jace would never be ours again.
