"Confidence waning?" Vanya said coolly. "I warned you before, but you wouldn't listen."
She had told him long ago that their relationship was impossible and that nothing he did would move her.
Cliff had persistently gambled his entire fortune on this, refusing to heed her warnings.
"Yes, my confidence is shaken," Cliff replied with a rare bitter smile. "I've never doubted myself before, but with you, I truly have no certainty."
Vanya averted her gaze. "If you fear losing the Todd family, I'm giving you a chance to back out of the bet."
"It's not fear of losing that plagues me—it's the fear of losing you," Cliff said intently. "I know that backing out means no chance at all. So I won't give up."
