Vanessa Carmichael’s world shatters when her mother’s life depends on a surgery she can’t afford. Broke and desperate, she never expects salvation to come in the form of Alexander Cole, ruthless billionaire and the country’s most unattainable man.

His proposal is as shocking as it is cold: marry me for three years, and I’ll pay for everything.

Bound by a contract, Vanessa enters Alexander’s glittering but dangerous world, where every glance hides secrets and every kiss feels like a lie. He swears he can’t love. She swears she won’t fall. But hearts have a way of breaking rules.

Will this marriage of convenience remain a deal on paper or ignite into something neither of them can control?

Chapter1:the contract proposal
The hospital reeked of disinfectant, but all Vanessa Carmichael could smell was desperation. The harsh fluorescent lights hummed above her, casting a sickly glow over the ward. Her mother lay pale and fragile on the bed, her chest rising weakly beneath the thin blanket. A tangle of tubes snaked from her arms, tethering her to machines that beeped in a cold rhythm. The doctor’s words echoed mercilessly in Vanessa’s head: "Without the surgery, she won’t make it through the month." Three million dollars. That was the price of her mother’s life. Vanessa’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. As a part-time nurse’s aide, she barely earned enough to cover their rent, let alone medical bills. She had already pawned her jewelry, sold her phone, begged distant relatives for help yet the amount she had scraped together was a mere drop compared to the ocean she needed. Her mother stirred, lips trembling into a faint smile. “Nessa… don’t look so worried. I’ll be fine.” Vanessa swallowed hard, forcing a smile she didn’t feel. “Of course, Mom. You’ll be fine.” But as she brushed a damp strand of hair from her mother’s forehead, her heart twisted. She could lie to her mother, but not to herself. Time was slipping through their fingers. That night, after another exhausting shift, Vanessa trudged toward the bus stop. The drizzle seeped through her threadbare shoes, her socks squelching against the wet pavement. Streetlights reflected off puddles, smearing the world in streaks of orange and gray. Her thin cardigan clung to her damp skin, and the weight of hopelessness pressed against her chest like a stone. She was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice the sleek black Mercedes gliding silently up beside her until the tinted window hummed down. “Miss Carmichael?” The voice was deep. Commanding. Impossible to ignore. Vanessa froze, clutching her worn handbag closer to her chest. A man stepped out, tall and sharply dressed in a charcoal suit. The drizzle clung to his black hair, but he didn’t flinch. His presence was magnetic, a gravity that pulled all attention toward him. Her breath caught in her throat. She recognized him instantly. Alexander Cole. The billionaire CEO of Cole Enterprises. She had seen his face splashed across newspapers and television interviews—hailed as one of the youngest, most ruthless business magnates in the country. He was a man whispered about in hushed awe and thinly veiled fear. And now, impossibly, he was standing in front of her. Vanessa’s mind scrambled. “W-what… what do you want with me?” His dark eyes scanned her face, unreadable, as though weighing every detail of her soul. “Get in the car. We need to talk.” Her instincts screamed danger. Stranger. Power. Risk. But something in his gaze, unyielding, absolute, made resistance feel useless. Against every ounce of better judgment, she found herself sliding into the warm leather interior. The ride was silent, except for the low hum of the engine. The car smelled faintly of cedarwood and wealth. Vanessa kept her gaze fixed on her lap, her fingers twisting the strap of her handbag. Her heart hammered so loudly she was sure he could hear it. Finally, Alexander spoke. His voice was smooth but cold, like steel polished to a shine. “I’ll be direct. I need a wife.” Her head snapped up. “Excuse me?” “I don’t have time to explain the details,” he continued, eyes fixed on the road ahead. “What I need from you is simple: marry me.” Vanessa gaped at him, certain she had misheard. “You, you can’t be serious. You don’t even know me!” “I know enough.” His tone left no room for argument. “You’re single. Discreet. Desperate for money.” Her stomach dropped. Heat crawled up her neck. How much did he know? “I’ll pay for your mother’s surgery,” Alexander continued, unfazed. “Her treatment. Her care. And more. In exchange, you’ll marry me for three years. After that, you’ll walk away with more money than you could ever hope to earn in a lifetime.” Vanessa’s throat went dry. This was insane. Marriage? To a stranger? To him? “Why me?” she whispered. For a moment, something flickered in his eyes, pain, maybe regret, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. “Because you’re exactly what I need. An arrangement without complications. You do as I say, and we both get what we want.” Her chest tightened. Her mother’s fragile smile flashed in her mind. Surgery. Three million dollars. Survival. Was this really her only option? “This doesn’t make sense,” she said, her voice shaking. “You could have anyone. Why trap a stranger in a contract marriage?” Alexander leaned closer, his voice low, his presence suffocating. “Because anyone else would expect love. And I don’t have that to give.” Vanessa’s breath caught. For the first time, she saw it, a shadow in his eyes, like a man haunted by ghosts he refused to name. The car slowed before a towering glass skyscraper, Cole Enterprises, its name gleaming in silver against the night sky. The driver stepped out to open her door. Alexander gestured. “Come.” She followed him inside, her damp shoes squeaking against marble floors that gleamed under crystal chandeliers. Everything screamed wealth, power, untouchable luxury. She felt like an intruder in her own skin. He led her into his office, a vast expanse framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering city. On the desk, a stack of pristine documents waited, thick and foreboding. “The marriage contract,” Alexander said, sliding the papers toward her. “Every clause is outlined. Read it. Sign it. Or walk away.” Vanessa’s trembling fingers flipped through the pages. Monthly allowance. Non-disclosure agreements. No emotional entanglements. Cold words that stripped marriage of everything warm. “This is…” Her voice cracked. “This is madness.” Alexander’s gaze softened for just a heartbeat. “Sometimes madness is the only way to survive.” Silence stretched between them. Her pulse thundered in her ears. Could she really do this? Could she tie herself to this ruthless man for three years, knowing it wasn’t real, knowing it could destroy her? Her mother’s pale face surfaced in her mind again. Surgery. Survival. Hope. Vanessa drew a shaky breath, lifted the pen, and scrawled her name. Alexander’s lips curved, something between satisfaction and relief. He reached across the desk, his fingers brushing hers. The contact sent an unexpected jolt racing up her arm. “Good,” he murmured, his voice velvet and steel. “From this moment on, you’re my wife.” And just like that, Vanessa Carmichael’s life was no longer hers.
