It was 7:42 a.m.. The top floor of Blackstone Group was already in chaos. "The Singapore investors have changed the meeting time to nine!" someone said. "The legal department still has not approved the acquisition documents!" another person exclaimed. "Who scheduled Mr. Black's interview with CNBC and the board meeting at the same time?" someone asked, clearly frustrated. Panic was around the executive floor as assistants rushed in every direction carrying tablets, coffee cups and thick folders. One person was not running around like everyone else. Sophia Bennett was walking through the corridor with steps. She was wearing a tailored navy suit and her dark hair was tied into a low bun. She had a leather planner in one hand. Her phone was buzzing nonstop. She looked at the screen. Saw that she had thirty-six unread emails and seventeen missed calls. She sighed quietly. " Morning Ms. Bennett!" every employee she passed said, greeting her with respect. This was not just because of her position. Because everyone knew that Sophia Bennett could solve any problem. She went into the office without knocking. The big room had a view of the city's skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The black marble floors shone in the morning light. Without turning around he asked, "How late am I?" "You are not late, " Sophia said. "I should be, " he replied, his deep voice calm. "You would have been late if I had not canceled the interview, moved the board meeting by thirty minutes, convinced the Singapore delegation to attend by video conference and had the legal department prioritize the acquisition documents " Sophia explained. She put a cup of coffee on his desk. "I now have eight minutes, " she said, handing him his schedule. Alexander finally turned around. His sharp gray eyes looked at Sophia. "For breakfast,? " he said. "Your breakfast is already in the conference room " Sophia replied. There was a pause before he asked, "My medication?" "It is in the left drawer, " Sophia said. "My mother?" he asked. "I told her you are flying overseas, " Sophia replied. "My grandfather?" he asked. "He believed me, " Sophia said. Alexander looked at her for another second before taking a sip of his coffee. "Good " he said, which was as close to praise as anyone in the company had ever heard from him. Sophia gave a nod. "I will prepare the presentation, " she said, turning to leave. "Sophia, " Alexander said, stopping her. "Yes?" she replied. "The coffee, " he said. "Is it too bitter?" Sophia asked. "It is perfect, " Alexander said. Sophia smiled slightly before leaving the room. Outside all the employees let out a breath they had been holding. "Only Ms. Bennett can talk to him like that, " one of them said. "I swear she is the person Mr. Black actually listens to, " another employee said. "She basically runs this company, " someone else said. Sophia ignored their whispers. She had heard them for five years. The truth was simple: Alexander trusted her. That was all. At nine o'clock the conference room doors opened. Twelve international investors came in followed by lawyers, financial advisors and board members. Alexander walked in first. Sophia followed three steps behind carrying only a tablet. The presentation. Everything went smoothly.. Then a board member frowned. "The financial projections are missing, " he said. There was silence. Another executive quickly searched through his files. "They were here this morning, " he said. "They are gone, " someone else said. The room started to murmur. Without those documents the acquisition worth billions of dollars could fall apart.
