Chapter Ten

"What?" I said and I watched him shove his hands in his pocket awkwardly. I've never seen this side of Christian before. He almost seemed gentle. But I have no idea why he was apologizing, "I'm sorry." He said again but this time he was staring at me. "For what? Catch me up here," I said. He shrugged with his hands still in his pocket, "The arcade thing," He said and I sighed then shook my head, "That wasn't a big deal. Misunderstandings happen all the time. Even though what you insinuated was downright disgusting, It's fine." I said and shuddered in disgust as I recalled the memory. He nodded but didn't say anything else. I nodded slowly and awkwardly turned on my heels then went downstairs to the party. The party was still in full swing but the crows seemed to have split up a bit, there was a small circle near the stairs and they seemed to be playing some kind of game. As I was walking down the stairs I heard a voice I honestly wish I wouldn't hear while I was here, "Come play with us Brooklyn," Sophia's voice pierced through the music. I looked down by the stairs and saw that she was sitting among the group that was playing the game. "I'd rather burn myself before I do anything with you," I said to her with an eye roll. "What were you even doing up there? I saw you go up with Dylan. Anything you want to say?" She smirked and I gagged at the thought of doing the things that were probably going through that girl's head. Don't get me wrong, Dylan is a very good looking guy, one may even call him an eye candy or something along those lines. But we have more of a brother-sister relationship than anything. I opened my eyes to speak when I was interrupted by a new and completely unfamiliar voice, "Sophia go put a c**k in your mouth or something. You talk too f*****g much," The girl behind me said. I choked on my spit and turned to this person, She was a few inches taller than me, her hair's jet black with a few pink highlights running through it, a silver septum, and because she wore a tank top her collection of body ink was on display. "Mercedes?" Sophia said the shock in her voice was impossible to miss. "Seriously, why do you still hang around here?" the girl, Mercedes, said with an eye roll before looking at me. She sized me up before wearing a small smirk on her face, "I don't believe we've met, I'm Mercedes Walker." She said, "I'm Brooklyn Mczander." I replied and I looked back to find Sophia sitting with her hands in her lap, her attention focused on the game. "Mczander? Nina Mczander's daughter?" She asked and I raised my brow at how quickly she made that connection. "Yeah, How'd you know?" I asked and she motioned for me to follow her. I did, She seemed cool and Summer did tell me to make a friend while I'm here. We ended up on a sofa that was kind of in the middle of the party but not really. But sitting here I could kind of see everything and everyone from here, "She's a pretty cool lawyer, her win-loss ratio is pretty impressive." She said and I raised my brow when she said that. "You've been one of her clients?" I asked, I never really spoke to my mom about work. Mainly because she couldn't speak on them legally but part of that had to do with me not really being interested in the justice system.  I know my mom was and still is one of the respected lawyers in the state, her raw and unfiltered manner plays a big role in that. She's badass and she knew that and she never let anyone who crossed her forget it either. "I have had the privilege," Mercedes said kicking back and watching the party going on downstairs. I raised my brows and she answered the question I was thinking before I could ask. "Vandalism, Battery on darling Sophia downstairs. Mainly vandalism though, I like to think of the street as my canvas," She said and I chuckled "You're a graffiti artist? That's so cool." I mumbled more to myself and she shrugged, "Your mother does good work though, Kept my punishment down to a minimum." She said and I looked at her again, Something she said before had just clicked, "Walker ... You're related to Jaden aren't you?" I asked and she shrugged "Twins," She replied and I gaped at her. "No way," I said and she laughed "Fraternal, He's a pain in the ass." She said with a dramatic eye roll, "How come you guys don't attend the same school? I mean I've never seen you around," I said and she titled her head, "I left for a while, This is my first night back. Didn't expect my house to be overcrowded by strangers but I wouldn't expect anything less from my brother." She said and I chuckled. I looked down at the party-goers and spotted my brother in the crowd with Summer. A ghost smile played at I watched them dance together. Maybe they didn't need my help getting together, They seem to be doing fine on their own. I looked back at Mercedes who was looking at her phone for a bit before turning her attention on me, "So, How'd you end up in a place that isn't your vibe?" She asked and I shrugged "Well I'm friends with your brother. And my best friend kind of forced me." I said. Mercedes chuckled and shook her head, "The boys invited you? Sheesh ... never in my eighteen years did I think they'd add another girl into their little posse." She said in a joking manner and I cringe, "I can barely tolerate Christian." I said truthfully and Mercedes rolled her eyes, "Is it because of his unbearable girlfriend by the name of Sophia Miles? Gosh, I can't stand that girl," She said. I shrugged, "No, She's her own problem. She hates me for no reason." I told her. Mercedes laughed "She does that because she feels like you're a threat. She's trying to show you that she's claiming him. That's her territory." Mercedes said leaning back. I could see the similarities as we spoke. Jaden and Mercedes were both laid back and very nonchalant. Though it seemed like Jaden was blunter than Mercedes but she was more outspoken and didn't hold back on anything. "A threat? Comical." I laughed and she laughed with me. "I'm serious." Mercedes laughed and I shook my head. We spent the next few minutes or maybe hours getting to know each other. She did end up bringing the school back up and said that she'd be returning to the school. To be honest, it's something I'm actually looking forward to, I finally made a friend and I'd have someone to eat lunch with ... fingers crossed. "What the f**k, Cedes?" I heard Jaden say before groaning, "Hello hello loser." Mercedes smirked. Jaden walked over with a small smile on her face and greet his sister by ruffling her hair, She swatted his hand away and glared at him "Seriously." Mercedes said, "Welcome back little sis," He said walking away from us and towards the rooms to check on Dylan I assume. "You're only older by seventeen minutes." Mercedes said and I heard Jaden chuckle, "Still makes me older!" He shouts over his shoulder and that was followed by the sound of a door closing, "I swear on my life I hate that boy." She mumbled as she fixed her hair. All I did was giggle, they reminded me of myself and my stupid brother Henry.
