Mate

We slowly belly crawled to the edge and peered over. A rogue. Not a rogue from the kingdom, a large one I cant recall ever having seen. And he was sniffing our paw prints. S**t. He’ll smell us any minute. We’ll be fine. Cal confidently replied. The wolf threw his head back and let out a blood curdling howl, as we watched we heard others approaching up the valley until there were five of them gathered below us. Double s**t what now? Cals wolf yawned and crossed it’s legs. I vote we sit and watch what they’re up to, but we could try to sneak off… of course there’s a risk then that they’d hear us… or we could go down there and fight them. You’re making it sound like they wont be up here in 5 seconds when they decide to follow our scent! Cal’s wolf’s head snapped round to look at me. We’ve masked our scent? What? I snapped, trying to control my emotions for fear I’d stop mind linking and switch to making sounds without realising. You’ve been masking your scent since we met? We thought you must have your reasons so did the same when we started heading up the valley. I blinked blankly. Your wolf’s just been doing that without telling you hasn’t she? He chuckled again. She doesn’t tell me much. I tried again to keep the hurt out my tone. My wolf could mask our scent? I’d never heard of anyone being able to do that. I looked back to the wolves below and sure enough they cold follow our footprints to where we jumped from the snow onto the rocks but no further. So now what? You can stay here and see if they find you and kill you if you like but I’m off. I hissed sarcastically through the link then willed my wolf to get us out of here. Like Cal’s wolf she yawned, her heartbeat completely regular and I could feel no signs of stress within us. She really was something else. I tried not to roll my eyes but for a small wolf who’d only been in one struggle she sure had something of an ego. She followed my wish though, crawling back from the edge before finding solid rosk and padding silently along the valley sides. We’d found mainly routes up here over the years, the current course she was setting followed a rocky path along the ridge before dropping steeply back down to the rogue palace. To my relief Cal followed us like a shadow. We would have been fine you know? I ignored him, his wolf may be about as big as the rogues but mine was probably half the size. His ego seemed to match that of my wolf which only annoyed me more. The further we got away from the rogues the more relaxed the wolves became, happily padding along beside each other. Where are you going? I’m escorting you home. Cal’s POV The second Midi’s wolf emerged from the trees my wolf, Warrior, bowed. Our Queen. He stated, his voice in awe. She was smaller than I’d thought our queen would be, but pitch black like her mother, but her eyes were pure gold. I could feel his complete devotion to her instantly, but before I had time to comment she was sprinting away from us like a flash. We must prove ourself to her Warrior advised through the mind link, his determination strong but for all our training I had him under complete control. I could feel him almost vibrate with energy, so with a sigh I released control and we sprinted after her. After several miles the terrain was becoming tougher to negotiate, I’d been pushing Warrior to his limit but we didn’t once get close to catching her. How is she this fast? I wondered aloud, we’d had years of the toughest training, no she wolf should come close to out running us. Warrior ignored me as her leapt from rock to rock in perilous pursuit. Suddenly she turned and leapt easily 5 meters from the canyon floor to a narrow rocky ledge and vanished from sight. Warrior followed without hesitation, my heart leapt to my mouth as he just managed to grab the ledge with a paw and scramble us to safety. i***t. I cursed, but we followed the ledge up the cliff face until on reaching the top we almost crashed into her wolf. She nodded, seemingly satisfied, and held our gaze. MATE!!! He Warrior panted excitedly. What???
