Run

Cal’s POV I can’t believe I’ve finally found her. I need to contact home and let them know… and then find a way to get her there…   Midi’s POV Why was I so drawn to this wolf? I had more important things to be planning right now but for some reason the thought of running free with him was irresistible to me. I could feel my wolf leaping about at the prospect of it almost clawing to get out. I arched an eyebrow trying to look cool and shrugged. ‘Stay’ I said with some sarcasm to the Cal’s wolf and went behind a tree to shift, tucking my clothes into a cubbyhole before I did so. I took a big breath and focussed on my wolf. She was a strange presence, I’d felt her from an age much younger than werewolves usually ‘get’ our wolves. I’d secretly snuck off in to the forest one summers day at about the age of 10, when looking back I can see things had begun to change. I’d focussed on that presence and to my own astonishment managed my first shift. My wolf had run fast and free that day and I had no control over her wild spirit. It had been something like that ever since. While most werewolves would be frilled to get their wolf so early for me it was a mixed blessing. I could feel her in me, powerful and firm. But she never spoke to me. My age was something of a mystery but Royal rescued me 15 years ago so I was definitely over 16, the age most of us get their wolves, and from what I’d questioned out of others that normally started with a conversation. I tried not to dwell on why mine might be different, although there were many lonely nights over the years where I’d ached for a friendly wolf. Instead I tried to appreciate and respect her. I focussed now on her and as usual she took the chance to leap forward and take over. I saw the world through her eyes as she strode out from behind the trees. What happened next confused me about Cal even further. His wolf sprang to attention then extended his front left paw and lowered his muzzled into what could only be described as a bow. My wolf continued to stand in her proud stance but for the first time I could feel new emotions coursing through her body… excitement definitely, happiness… but something deeper I couldn’t understand. Without bothering to give me any warning my wolf took off at full speed up the river valley. She was pulling out all the stops, leaping ravines and jumping from boulders with a gleeful ease, Cal’s wolf seemed to just about keep up but he never got close to her. As we got further up the river the valley became a gorge, effortlessly my wolf turned and sprinted up a steep path we’d found hidden in thecliffs years before, then spun round to watch as Cal’s wolf appeared behind us. As if satisfied my wolf gave a small bow back, the two wolves now staring into the depths of each others eyes. Unable to understand anything that was happening I focussed all my thoughts on Cal and tried to mind link, what the hell was that? Didn’t your wolf tell you? No. It’s not my place to then. We both sat at the edge of the cliff and looked down across the valley, the full moon now high in the sky lighting it with a silver glow. She’s incredible by the way, your wolf. I know. I replied, trying to keep the sadness from my response. Cal… how are we mind linking right now? Isn’t it obvious? He turned to look at me, his wolves eyes this time focussing somehow through my wolf and onto me sending a shiver down my spine, I’m from your pack. My pack? My mind raced back through the memories of my child hood I’d dreamed. There was a never a pack. It was just me and my parents… in the end my mum was heavily pregnant. My pack. My heart ached at the thought, if we’d had a pack, had back up, then that day might never have gone down the way it did. I let out an involuntary whine as I remembered the day I’d dreamt of so many times. The rogues had appeared from nowhere, surrounding us on our remote ranch somewhere sunny and warm, far from here. I remember the evil smirks on their faces, the stench of them surrounding my small family. A branch snapped below us in the valley and my wolf retook control, flattening our body against the rocky ground as Cal followed suit.
