Prologue
It was probably the wine she wasn’t old enough to be drinking, but Eden leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. Immediately realizing what she had done, she tried to pull away, but he deepened the kiss, grabbing her hips and pulling her closer.
A small moan escaped her lips, and that seemed to shock him. He pulled back as if he had been burned.
“I’m sorry. We can’t… you’re young,” he said, dragging his hand through his hair, frustration written all over his face.
Eden just stared at him, embarrassed. She didn’t need a mirror to see how red her face had become.
“You’re leaving… I don’t want you to leave,” she said after a minute of silence.
He looked at her, his expression unreadable.
“I have to go,” he finally said as he rose, dusting the grass off his pants.
She scoffed in disbelief. She had just expressed herself, and he was running away. Had everything up until now been a lie?
“I’ve loved you since the first time I saw you,” she confessed, and he shut his eyes. She could tell he didn’t want to hear any more, but she continued anyway.
“It’s because of me, isn’t it?”
Silence.
“Answer me!” she screamed. The embarrassment was gone, replaced with rage.
He opened his eyes slowly before finally replying.
“Eden, everything isn’t always about you,” he said, and then he walked away.

He didn’t look back. Not once.
Eden didn’t run after him either.
That was the last time she saw Kane.
