Senior Prison Officer Jannings cast an experienced eye over the diverse mixture of friends and relatives waiting in the anteroom. The small room was adjacent to the meeting hall and the visitors were all casting frequent glances towards the electric clock above the door, anxiously waiting for it to finally indicate that visiting time had officially started.
Once a forbidding-looking castle with stone monsters guarding its entrance, the atmosphere within the women’s prison these days was much more relaxed.
This was chiefly due to the extensive re-building and modernisation that had recently been carried out under the enlightened guidance of a progressive female governor, whose reforms had earned her a well-deserved CBE.
