Chapter Twenty-One Strange Business Friday morning was a busy day in Newbury town centre, so Don had to park in a side road off Northbrook Street and walk down the road to the bank that was situated in the large square called The Cornmarket. As he arrived at the square he noticed the familiar sight of a blue Customs and Excise van parked up in between a row of cars. Two excise officers were busy “dipping” the fuel tanks of vehicles they suspected to be running on “red” diesel; the duty-free fuel only supposed to be used in off-road agricultural vehicles. “You need to watch out for that lot,” Anne had warned him. “They’re a nightmare. Inland Revenue are pussycats by comparison.” “They’re not that bad. The ones I’ve worked with were a really decent bunch of blokes.” “Huh!” she scoffed.
